Since no one else has answered this question I will based on my own experience in the state of Virginia. Other states may differ. You can call your state corporation commission to ask about your specific situation.A registered agent must be either an officer of the court (attorney) or an owner/officer of the corporation residing in the state the corporation was incorporated in.I am a CPA with over 35 years experience in public accounting. My practiced was in my own S corporation. For many years I paid an attorney to be my registered agent. He did nothing and got to the point he did not even return my phone calls. One year I decided to stop wasting hundreds of dollars. I went online and found the change of registered agent form. I filed out the form and mailed it back to the SCC for VA. I believe there was a small fee but that was years ago. I cannot remember for sure. Each year I receive the annual report form and a separate payment form for my corporation. Since I am the only officer/owner with no changes, I sign the forms, write a check and mail the two envelopes.In truth the attorney was maintaining the corporate stock book and annual meeting minutes. Since I was a one owner entity there were no stock changes or annual meetings. Nothing that required the legal niceties. Another purpose of the registered agent is for the corporation to have a legally recognized person to receive notifications like summons for law suits. If you are not stable in your business location or other address you will be using on the registration, have a fluid situation with ownership or other complications, I would NOT recommend acting as your own agent.This is a non legal opinion and worth what you paid.
