I've run out of money. How long can I survive eating only Costco samples?
We had a guy floating around our Costco who was, if not homeless, then at least not well off. He was pretty obviously using it to supplement his diet and kill time. I presume he had a membership. He wasn't that scruffily dressed, but he wasn't nicely dressed, either. If he bought stuff, it wasn't while I was there. He grazed the samples and hung around on the display furniture. Maybe he got a hot dog or a smoothie when he could.I saw him there every time I went, for a couple months maybe. I'm sure they eventually caught on and saw him out. I have no idea how subtle he was being, or not. Maybe he was only there on weekends, when someplace else wasn't open to him. Maybe he had the sense and the mobility to split his time between there and the library and his camper. Maybe they only delayed in sending him on his way because they were unsure of the legality, when he wasn't actively bothering anyone or doing anything more than loitering. All I really know is that he was around quite a lot for awhile, until he wasn't.I don't think Costco samples would sustain an adult very well, for very long. If this is just a hypothetical question for you, go sometime when you're ready for lunch but haven't eaten yet. I think even if you cheated and took an extra sample at each station for a nonexistent companion, you'd still be pretty unsatisfied, and that's one meal. I think the staff would catch on pretty quickly and probably encourage you to finish up your shopping and head home if they noticed you going around a second or third time, or hanging around for hours, day after day. There are better choices, if your month is longer than your money, including SNAP/EBT, food pantries, and soup kitchens. Some restaurant jobs also include meals or let staff take home leftovers, but don't assume. Depending on your skills and abilities, you might also want to look at options for earning additional income.
At what point did you realize you had changed social classes?
My parents are both scientists, and times were hard as a kid since my dad was doing his post-doc and my mom was just a research technician.I remember as a kid, I would love eating fries, but frozen french fries from the supermarket were too expensive. Instead, my parents improvised -microwaved potatoes dipped in ketchup tasted the same, more or less.I didn’t know what eating out at a restaurant was until 6th grade. As a child, I thought getting whoppers at Burger King was “fancy”.I got a lot of stuff -toys and clothing- from my church. My favorite stuffed animal from childhood is a dog that the pastor’s wife got me for Christmas. But this all changed after my parents moved from academia into the pharmaceutical industry. In 7th grade, I was pretty surprised that my parents got me a PC. It made my life so much easier since I didn’t have to go to the library or borrow my dad's computer to do homework. Then, came the Costco membership; suddenly, Saturday became my favorite day because of all the free samples and the large hot dog at the food court. We would no longer get fast food. Instead, if my parents were busy, they would order takeout instead. But I think the biggest change was their emphasis on my education. Clarinet lessons, orchestra fees, and a performance tour on the other side of the world? No problem. Model UN conference in Europe? Sure! Uber to get to my internship every day in the summer? Definitely.I definitely am thankful for what my parents have done, and continually do, for me. But to be honest, I don’t miss my childhood life.
