(As in: Becoming weary).As for why North Americans spell it as tire, it’s because:Noah Webster. (Of dictionary fame).He had the not entirely unreasonable idea of ‘simplifying’ the spelling of a quite vast range of words. Some of his proposals caught-on in his homeland, many didn’t.This is why the USA spells ‘colour’ as color. Everyone else who speaks English? They spell it as ‘colour’. (This includes Canadians. They use ‘colour’, but I do not know why Canadians spell tyre as tire).You can be thankful that some of the more extreme ideas didn’t catch on.‘Tung’ for tongue is pretty harmless, but infantile.‘Wimmin’ for woman might have been more contentious if it had caught-on!‘Masheen’ for machine is just dumb.‘Sizerz’ instead of Scissors. Most people get that!What does get boring is some people from the USA who seem to expect the entire English speaking world to change to their method of spelling, just ‘because’.That ain’t gonna happen.(I am not for an instant suggesting that the OP feels this way. They aren’t.It is equally tedious to have compatriots complain that ‘we invented the language’ as justification for criticising an entire nation for ‘daring’ to change the spelling of a few words for long-gone historic reasons.Language evolves. The English language is more widely spoken than any other language. Change is inevitable & many of the words we English routinely use have convoluted and very (gasp!) foreign origins. It is hardly surprising if other users of the English language do the same.The English language is wonderfully expressive & flexible. No English-speaking country has a government-run body to regulate what is acceptable English. Many English-speaking countries have a citizenry that would ignore (with derision) the attempt to modify acceptable English. The English language belongs to those who use it, and to no one else.The question details speak of the effort to regulate acceptable English in terms of maintaining a lawn. I suppose, ideally, the metaphor would lead to an English language as formal and logical as a French garden.However, English is a cottage garden, and its beauty is based on different principles.By the way, what are these “250 years of negligence” of which you speak? Was there an attempt to set up such an academy 250 years ago? Are you speaking of Noah Webster, by any chance? He was just a guy, and an American, not a government body. Nothing I’ve ever seen even comes close.Long answer:I’m seeing lots of answers comparing English to non-alphabetic writing systems, but this isn’t a fair comparison in my opinion.If we only compare alphabetic writing or abjad writing (consonant-only alphabets), English is probably the language that deviates the most from either phonetic or phonemic writing.I don’t believe any other alphabetic or abjad writing system comes close to what English does, but a distant second language like this might be either Swedish or Danish. However, both of these languages are much more phonemic than English.Yiddish has an element of this. Yiddish is mostly phonetic, but Hebrew words borrowed into Yiddish retain their original spellings but often have radically different pronunciations. For example, Hanukkah (חנכה) is spelled phonetically in Hebrew and pronounced khanuká or [χanuˈka].
