I can’t speak to how, but I have some thoughts on why.There are over 300M unique users here. It’s a very popular site. And people are really not terribly effective at protecting themselves.If I’d done this, my motivations might have beenif I can get clear passwords, and email addresses, I know most people are shameless password recyclers, and I might have a credential that lets me access other accounts - which I can find from their emailif I can just get names and passwords, I can conduct phishing expeditions using “official Quora letterhead” because I know these people are Quora users, and likely to be freaked out about the breach, and more likely to “click here to protect yourself”if I can get log data, I can determine who is active in “sensitive” topics and potentially e-blackmail them. Note that Anonymous actually being fully decoupled is a huge win in this regard.I’m pretty sure, but not 100% certain, that there is no risk to the Stripe payment system used for the Partner Program, but that doesn’t mean I might not take a run at that, if I could get the tokens.That’s just off the top of my head. The credentials also have value on the open (black) market, but not a huge amount, unless they’re unique, and potentially valuable, which is unlikely (particularly given the known contents of the Marriott breach the same week)Hacking is largely a for-profit game. Look for ways to monetize, you’ll find the reasons.

I was in my 6th year working full time night shift at a Time share resort and after the promised pay hike was never given to me I knew it was time to bail.I had tremendous medical bills for my newborn son and California medical costs are the worst in the universe.If you are uninsured they charge $45.00 a single aspirin, I kid you not, the stupid CA. politicians.So I was emptying the trash in the big dumpster and the big black bag breaks as I start to hurl it up and over and papers spill out and I start picking them up and tossing them in and I see a Corporate letterhead on one letter and I read it and it is from the Headquarters and says confidential, please destroy after reading!It is the new policy of the regional managers awarding the resort managers 15k a year to put a hold on all employee raises and bonuses and to hire part time help only to preclude any health insurance.And it further stated that the past two years were successful and that this year the bonuses will be awarded at the newest resorts big managerial staff party meeting and holiday and many prizes and a new car will be raffled off lottery style too, and everyone stands a chance to win!I kept this this letter and was prepared to use it in a lawsuit as I thought I might have a future there.My Father was the one I trusted in life and he passed away 5 years earlier and my Mom was in a bad way and I thought of her as I wanted to be of help to her and I never told anyone and gave my one month notice.Our new Manager was a straight up guy and always treated me good and told me that it was not possible to get my promotion. I saw him a year later and he told me the 6 years I was the night man no problems happened, but the first 6 months I was gone, more bad things happened and he appreciated me and wished he gave me a bonus and promotion.It was a real fine compliment from a hard worker that was just following orders!
