I’m going against the grain here, the best one in my opinion is The Living Daylights. Yes, I know it’s with Timothy Dalton in the lead, but hear me out.Timothy Dalton is a classically trained actor. He’s also the son of an actual SOE agent, so take that Daniel Craig. Craig was in better shape than Pierce Brosnan ever was. Dalton gets the psyche right. Operatives are very driven people. Dalton also sets the tone better than Roger Moore. Dalton as Bond is more dark and grittier. The way oh irony, Craig actually plays as in the latest films. Roger Moore is too light in my opinion, it’s meant to be an espionage film, not a comedy. George Lazenby is not as bad as people say he is, but certainly not the greatest. Lazenby was outshined by Diana Rigg.Now you may ask “But isn’t Connery the one and only Bond?” Connery is great. Dalton though was actually approached for the role in the sixties, but thought himself too young for the role then. I ask you the counter question. What if he had accepted then? Would you have considered him the one and only Bond? Be honest! I’m sure the answer is yes.The music in The Living Daylights is very good in my opinion. Sadly it’s John Barry’s latest work, but also his best work. The score is grand and epic. Hercules takes off is second to none. The theme song by A-ha is also very good. A great 80’s pop hit. A-ha is a great Norwegian synth pop band, that have made several excellent songs such as Take On Me and The Sun Always Shines on T.V. and The Living Daylights.The Living Daylights was directed by John Glenn. John Glenn in my opinion is the best Bond director. If people say Connery is the supposed definitive Bond, then Glenn surely is the definitive Bond director. Period. No question.Glenn has directed more Bond films than any other director. He directed five films in total and was doing this on a fairly low budget. He always performed steady. Inflation corrected the films directed by Glenn always did good at the box office, his latest License to Kill primarily suffered from poor marketing in the U.S. and could have performed better. John Glenn brought an edge to the Bond film series. The Living Daylights is also the surest way to tell John Glenn is a good director, for it’s not a novel, but a short story of Fleming and yet Glenn made it work.The editing and visual scenery is the best in The Living Daylights. Anything from people jumping out of airplanes, snowy scenery to exotic scenery, tall bridges, frozen lakes, and overall spectacular footage. It’s the most visually appealing of all the films.The traditional chase with the car, is probably the best car chase of all the Bond car chases in the films. Anything from listening in on the police radio, lasers that carve up the other car, guided missiles to blow up a road block, bulletproof glass, rocket propelled to jump over a guard house, ski railings, self destruct, and finally using a cello case as a sled. It just falls short of being the best chase ever, which I think is the Goldeneye chase with the tank going through the wall, but The Living Daylights more than makes up for it with the fight on board of the airplane, or should I say off board.Now I’m not a car guy. Many people say the sixties grey Aston Martin DB5 is the definitive Bond car. I respectfully disagree. The black Aston Martin V8 Vantage looks more sleak.Though Judi Dench was great as M, I think you will agree that Robert Brown as M is a worthy successor of Bernard Lee. Wonderfully cast as a manager.Desmond Llewelyn as quartermaster, yes that’s what Q stands for, it’s got nothing to do with an anonymous conspiracy, is the best Q, that a James Bond could have wished for and in addition to all the gadgets offers plenty dry wit.Lois Maxwell is the archetype secretary, but Caroline Bliss does a decent job replacing her. Though Bliss falls a bit flat with the humour, she is by far the cutest of all the secretaries. The usual critique about Dalton is that he is less humorous than Roger Moore or Sean Connery, I don’t necessarily disagree with that, but I think he underacts the humour and this is most shown in the interaction with Miss Moneypenny.Reviews generally rate the Bond villians in The Living Daylights as not the best Bond villians. The reviewers likely expected another larger than life Blofeld as criminal mastermind. The villians in The Living Daylights differ a lot from the usual recipe and I think it adds to the film. They’re not as archetypical nor one dimensional as some reviewers make them out to be. Andreas Wisniewski is well casted as the bad henchman. Jeroen Krabbé is great as a deceptive sleazeball. Joe Baker does a good performance as a bad arms dealer with a Napoleon complex. John Rhys-Davies has the best performance in the film. He always delivers. Though there is one area where the film hasn’t aged all too well, the Mujahideen in Afghanistan as allies. Oops.Of course no Bond film can do without a Bond girl. Again The Living Daylights differs from the usual recipe. Where most Bond films have two, or three, or even four Bond girls. The Living Daylights apart from a brief appearance of Kell Tyler, has only one true Bond girl. The Living Daylights has no femme fatale and no sacrificial lamb, it’s the only Bond film of it’s kind. Perhaps you can say I’m a hopeless romantic, but I think The Living Daylights is the most romantic of all the Bond films. Siskel and Ebert have theorized in their review of The Living Daylights that this had to do with the 80’s scare. I don’t think that’s true. There is a pool scene and in another scene the actress Virginia Hey who plays the role of misstress of general Pushkin played by John Rhys-Davies, is basically stripped down to her panties. Instead I propose another explanation.Maryam d’Abo previously worked as a model and I think you will agree that she’s a gorgeous blonde and looks great in any shot.Most movie databases list her nationality as Dutch and English, but she’s in fact part Georgian. For those who don’t know that’s the country not the U.S. state. Her grandfather was a general and her grandmother a princess.Maryam had taken lessons at Drama Centre London and is an accomplished actress. She grew more as an actress than George Lazenby could, who went from model to Bond actor.Her character of Kara Milovy is also the Bond girl that had a far bigger character progress than any other Bond girl, going from cellist, to sniper, to supporter, to love interest.The Living Daylights opens with the usual shot and a killing, but the film has relatively few fatalities for a Bond film. Though a precious car also got destroyed and a cello.
