Why teach at a private school instead of a public school?

I had a very unorthodox teaching experience as a Christian who taught English/history and theater in a private Orthodox Jewish high school. The male and female students had to be taught in separate buildings. Although the salary was about the same as public schools I had taught in, I loved teaching in this school much more. My experiences as a public school teacher were not nearly as rewarding.Although I went to coed public schools myself, I thought that separating the genders had clear advantages. The girls felt equally adroit in the maths and sciences, just at the point that males begin to actually take school seriously and usully adance beyond the females.These schools in California only hired teachers from Ivy League schools. Having a teaching certificate was an announcement of mediocrity. (I was the exception from Boston University, which was good enough for them.) I was an anomaly by being a professional music and stage director and having actual experience teaching high school English, history and theater.)I was treated as the professional and enjoyed no interference about what I taught or spent on productions. (I had a reputation for always making a profit.)All the students were a teacher’s dream: well-disciplined; loved learning; not distracted by the opposite sex; no competitive attire because of uniforms.There was a very close comarderie among the teachers. As a newcomer, everyone helped me out with the ins and outs of strict Orthodox Jewish rules.I never had a student disrespect me or be a behavioral problem.I knew that I had the privilege of teaching future leaders, doctors, lawyers, CEOs in the U.S.Smaller class sizes. There’s a huge difference in how much material that can be covered with 15 vs. 35 students. Great feeling of accomplishment for a teacher.As a Christian (or even if I were a reform Jew), we know nothing about the inner sanctum of the very private world of how Orthodox Jews live. I was invited to many special private occasions (weddings) and Sabbath at some homes. What an incredible experience.These students went to school from 8 am to 5 pm (that included Orthodox Jewish classes) and then went home to study. They never complained. They loved learning.Given their grueling schedule, I made sure that our big musical productions would be the experience of a lifetime for the girls. It felt great to see the girls have such freedom of expression. Since the boys couldn't watch me dance or sing (unless I was a dead singer-one of the rules), I had the excitement of seeing the boys do non-musical scenes that for the first time showed off their creative talents. (I could have directed ’12 Angry Men’, but what do you do with 40 happy males?)When it came to show time, one would have thought by the size of the audience that we were a doing a Broadway premiere. I was so proud them, and they were so proud of themselves. They were that terrific.It is a great feeling for a teacher to get letters from students ten or twenty years later in life. They said that when they looked back upon those years, they realized how much those shows meant to them, and how many of the skills they learned that were so useful in their careers. What a present it was to get these letters from screenwriters, producers, CEOs, and others who were top in their respective fields.
