How would you describe your journey as a writer?
My Journey To Becoming The Writer I AmIn the South St. Louis neighborhood where I grew up, there were a ton of kids very close to me in age.At the end of my time in 3rd Grade a group of the neighborhood kids gathered at the end of the block and whimsically decided to put on a Summer play.Image of Southampton Homes in South St. Louis by Author Paul Sableman - Wikipedia - All Rights ReservedNo one had a good idea of what to do for the play, so one of the kids said “Karen can write a new play for us.”I was surprised to have the task dumped upon me, but was too young and naive to understand exactly what I was agreeing to do.Writing My First PlayI decided writing a play couldn’t be all that hard. Right? The end result?A very clumsy, goofy, strange little play about a farm girl who ran away from an abusive mother to the big city where she found love, happiness, fame and fortune.Image of Karen Marie Shelton Childhood Home in South St. Louis by Karen Marie Shelton - All Rights ReservedConsidering my own story living with an abusive mother, I had a lot of experience to draw from.Yes, we put on the play for the neighborhood in Judy Streibal’s back yard using her mother’s largest bed sheet as a curtain. All of the kids dragged odds and ends from their homes, with or without parental permission, and the show went on.It opened late, most of the kids forgot the lines I clumsily wrote for them and at points the kids would fall down laughing in the middle of the scenes.I really didn’t care. I had so much fun writing a little play I never forgot the experience.Writing A Column For The Grade School NewspaperBy the time I was in 6th grade, my English teacher, who told my parents I had a very special natural gift for writing, drafted me to help put out a very amateur version of a grade school newspaper.Since I was in the grade school band, I covered the music beat and wrote about band appearances, new music we were learning and the life as a band member who had to practice all the time.Writing CompetitionsIn the 8th grade my new English teacher had me writing lots of special assignments she submitted to various writing competitions in the area.I won a few of the competitions and my teacher encouraged me to continue to write every day of my life.By high school I was writing for the newspaper, the yearbook and anything else I had time in my busy schedule to squeeze in.Nonstop JournalingI also was writing in journals, notebooks an scrapbooks, which I still have to this day.Image Of Article Authored By Karen Marie Shelton - Published in Artium Artisan Newsletter - Winter 2004 - From The Private Collection Of Karen Marie Shelton - All Rights ReservedMy writing continued all through college for all sort of venues ranging from the newspaper to work for my sorority.I always did best in college classes where lots of papers were part of the final grade.Writing For A LivingAfter I graduated with my Bachelors, my first job was as a systems analyst where I wrote design documents, requests for information (RFIs), responses to government bids and tons of user documents (training, guides, manuals). While I was in graduate school working on my Masters and then Ph.D, I wrote all types of papers and studies.Free Lance WritingI received my first paid writing assignment in my 20s for a Teen Magazine out of California.I was also paid to write for a series of alternative health organizations in the St. Louis area.Throughout my entire life, since my beginning as a clumsy playwright, I’ve been writing non-stop.I have many boxes of journals, published articles, papers and documents I’ve lugged with me for years.Writing For The WebI the mid-1990s I started the first consumer hair, beauty and fashion site on the Internet and wrote a staggering amount of content for articles, blogs, columns and forums. In 2000 I was approached by MultiMediaMagazines (MMI), and offered a position as a paid consumer editor/writer and regular columnist.During my time with MMI I learned a lot about writing for the mainstream hair, beauty and fashion publishing industry.Image Of Article Authored By Karen Marie Shelton - Published in MultiMediaMagazines - Bridal Hair Gallery Magazine - 2008 - From The Private Collection Of Karen Marie Shelton - All Rights ReservedI’ve also ghost written a few books which have been published over the years. Those books were painful because I had to work closely with editors who required me to honor strict style guides.Unfinished Books On My Home CloudI currently have over 100 drafts of e-books on my home cloud I’ve never gotten around to finishing.Maybe one of these days I’ll publish a few.In the meantime, I write every single day of my life.To me, it’s like breathing. If I stop writing, I start to feel like I’m choking.Yes, I commit word crimes, I can be a sloppy writer in terms of technique, but when it comes to an undying passion for writing, look no further. The Writer I Am Today Has Been A Lifelong JourneyAlthough I still write for my website, take consulting jobs which require me to write tons of documents, I still love writing on places like Quora where I can write from my heart and soul.My writing journey has been one of the best trips I’ve taken in this lifetime.I am extremely grateful for all the opportunities I’ve been given to write and all the wonderful people who have encouraged me to continue.
Should I apply to UMSL or Saint Louis University?
I received my Bachelors degree from UMSL and my Masters from St. Louis University. I also worked on my doctorate at Saint Louis University. To be perfectly frank, I very much enjoyed both schools.According to the 2020 Missouri University Rankings, St, Louis University is #4 and UMSL is #6.To see the list check out: https://www.4icu.org/us/missouri/UMSL Pushed Me AcademicallyEven though UMSL was where I received my undergraduate program, I felt I was pushed very hard academically.I had to work very hard to maintain my position on the Deans List.Although at times it was challenging to combine a heavy course load with my part time job pressures, I always felt I received a top notch education at UMSL.More about UMSL: https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/umsl-2519UMSL Campus Covers A Large TerritoryUMSL is spread across 470 acres in suburban St. Louis County.Initially I felt uncomfortable on the UMSL campus because it is very large and covers a lot of territory.Founded in 1963, it was built on the site of a former country club which had lots of land.At times I was walking miles from my car to the various buildings where my classes were held because the campus is spread out over a very large area of land.Commuter Students Are In The MajorityThe vast majority of students at UMSL, when I attended school there, did not live on or adjacent to campus and were day commuters. This has changed over the years. As of 2016 the number of On Campus Students (10, 848) outranked Off Campus students (6,141)When I attended UMSL, commuter students don’t tend to hang around as much after classes since they often work part or full time to pay for their tuition.Which is exactly what I did.Very Large Lecture Style ClassesMy parents could not help me with my college tuition, so I worked one or more jobs to pay my own way. Some of the lecture style classes were huge. Over the years UMSL has worked hard to offer much smaller classes and has been very successful with this goal. When I attended, the classes were still quite large. It was difficult, at least in my case, to make strong connections and friendships when surrounded by throngs of other students.Greek Life Gave Me A Sense Of BelongingI did find after I was rushed by an UMSL sorority, Alpha Xi Delta, that I really started to enjoy my time on campus.Greek life is not for everyone, but it was a great option for me.Besides feeling a sense of connection, my time in a Greek sorority really helped me succeed in my classes.Alpha Xi Delta placed great value on learning, study and grades. I excelled with the constant academic encouragement of my sisters.See: Sorority Hair: Memories Of Alpha Xi DeltaIf you don’t want to commit to a sorority or fraternity, there are some interesting special interest clubs you could join instead.St. Louis University Has A Different EnergySaint Louis University (SLU) is a private institution that was founded in 1818. It is located not far from downtown St. Louis. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 7,454, its setting is urban, and the campus size is 286 acres.Even though I primarily attended St. Louis University at night and on weekends, I immediately felt much more comfortable on the campus.Maybe it was because I was a grad student and the classes I took were very small.Or possibly it was because the professors made a point of actively working with the students and getting to know them. It’s not that UMSL professors were aloof or uninterested, it was just that the classes were a lot larger and there were more students vying for attention. My Masters degree which took two years and required a thesis, cost me almost 4xs what my four years at UMSL cost.Note: As of 2017 UMSL had a net cost of $9,969/yr while SLU had an average cost of $33,812/yr.For more info: 20 BEST VALUE COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES IN MISSOURISt. Louis University is very generous with scholarships and student work opportunities. However, it is definitely a lot more expensive to attend.Luckily when I attended SLU I was working full time in my chosen career and I was given some incentives including a book reimbursement allowance and financial rewards for A grades. Those incentives helped me with my much higher tuition and book fees.Ultimate Career GoalsBoth schools are exceptional in their own right and offer great advantages. UMSl is generally a lot more affordable for commuter and part time students than SLU.Both schools offer internships in the St. Louis business and government related communities. While I was at UMSL I spent a year working as an intern for a government run agency. At SLU I was an intern working on a project for the City of St. Louis. Both universities offer on-campus living, Greek life and a vast number of special interest groups and clubs.Ultimately I think it all boils down to budget, future career goals and the types of degrees offered by the individual schools.SLU does offer a pre-med program but UMSL offers a great engineering and International Business program.Do Your HomeworkNot everyone feels comfortable in every university setting.I highly recommend spending time at both universities. Visit the student union building, check out the libraries and the parking.See: UMSL Visitors and Visit the St. Louis Campus : SLUIf you plan on living on-campsus, visit the dorms.Even though UMSL was very large and spread out, I found great peace hanging out and studying outside on one of the large hills where students would gather. At St. Louis University, I found the library to be my haven.Ultimately any university commitment takes a lot of thought. Give yourself time to consider all the pros and cons of both and then make your decision.Good luck to you.
