Let us confess our faith.I’m an atheist. Raised Lutheran, went to lots of other churches before finally converting away completely. It’s rare that I go to Lutheran church services—maybe once every few years.I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.If you ever get the chance to go to a traditional church service, I highly recommend it. Not because I’m a Christian, but because I find there’s something incredibly beautiful about tradition.I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.Modern churches usually have upbeat worship with all different songs and prayers and sermons, and while they generally follow the same itinerary each week, it’s not that structured.Lutheran churches, though… every word is written for you. Every prayer is already prepared.He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried.Hearing dozens of people chant the same words rhythmically, without faltering, with no one voice standing out above the others is one of the most religious experiences I’ve ever had.He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father.A Lutheran pastor told me that the Lutheran church is so predictable in worship because life is so unpredictable, and that the only way to study our problems is to have one place where nothing ever changes.It makes the church a safe place to grapple with the unexpected.He will come again to judge the living and the dead.I always join in on these chants when I find myself at church. I always say the Lord’s Prayer and sing the hymns and follow worship in traditional Lutheran fashion.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, the life everlasting.Because only in a room where nothing changes can I see how I have.Amen.

But generally, these are the practices of the denominations I have been associated with in my life.The Catholic Church teaches that Catholics should only receive communion from other Catholic churches, and non-Catholics should not receive Communion in Catholic churches.The Lutheran Church generally also participates in closed communion, requesting that all participants in communion administered from a Lutheran church be baptized members of a Lutheran church. There are numerous synods within the Lutheran church, and some of them may even require that participants be members of that specific synod of Lutheran churches.Non-denominational churches generally have open communion. Typically, the only "rule" is that one believe in Jesus as their Lord and Saviour.This may lead one to ask, why the different communion policies amongst Christian denominations. This is largely in part to what each believes and teaches regarding Communion. These beliefs are obviously very important to each denomination, but I'm going to gloss over the basic differences to help put these differing policies in perspective.Catholicism teaches that during the bread and wine are blessed by the priest, they become the body and blood of Jesus and cease to be bread and wine. Therefore, it's crucial from the Catholic church perspective that any participants in Communion share this belief.The Lutheran church teaches that after the blessing by the pastor, the bread and wine also become the body and blood of Jesus. It's both body and bread, wine and blood, at the same time. This is why Lutherans also practice closed communion.Non-denominational churches generally teach that the bread and wine REPRESENT the body and blood of Jesus. They don't become body and blood - but serve as a symbol of what Jesus did.
