No. You’ve falsely baited the question with a non-sequitur fallacy and, worse still, you’ve included a flat-out false premise, a hasty generalization and a silly red herring. There’s literally no honest way to answer this question without picking it apart.First, you said, “liberals”. Some liberals do some things. Some liberals are murderers or rapists or pedophiles. So are some conservatives. Some liberals do some other things, so do some conservatives. Liberals aren’t a hive mind any more than conservatives are. Only children paint a large group with silly hasty generalizations. They do that because nuance is hard and takes thought. It’s easier to just be simplistic and call all of some group a thing.Second, liberals no more “oppose conservatives” than “conservatives oppose liberals”. See how that works? Why does the GOP oppose liberals while supporting the same kind of hateful homophobia of Muslims and the Westboro Baptist Church? See how that works? We can do this all day if you like! I can actually show you videos of people at Trump rallies talking about how horrible gay marriage is. See! Same as Wahabi Muslims! Why are you such a terrorist?Third, liberals don’t “support Muslims” (though, certainly, some might). That is the most idiotic baiting red herring I’ve read in ages. Look. People have values, sometimes those values overlap with other people. Sometimes, some of those other people tend to be horrible human beings. Adolph Hitler supported animal rights. His party passed some of the earliest and most far-sweeping animal rights laws on Earth. Are you going to posit that liberals are Nazis now?Many conservative Christians believe that marriage is between one man and one woman. So do many conservative Muslims. Can I now claim that you support conservative Islam because you happen to have one or two overlapping qualities with conservative Muslims? What about Catholic priests who molest children? Surely we can find some overlapping qualities that conservative Christians have with them … so I guess that means “conservative Christians support the raping of children!” Stop raping children you horrible monster!See, most liberals believe in a humanistic approach to government. In the US, most of us happen to respect this thing called “First Amendment to the United States Constitution” which guarantees all people in the US the right to worship any deity they choose. Other Amendments in our Constitution also guarantee that we treat all humans as equal and innocent until proven guilty. Because of that, we don’t “support Muslims.” We support an idea, a protected liberty, and Muslims fall under that idea.Know who else does? You. You fall under that protection. You and an ideology I loathe get that same protection. So do Nazis. So does the KKK. So do Communists. In a free and transparent society, we don’t get to pick the political or existential belief systems of people and decide which ones are allowed otherwise we’re not really free at all. We’re a tyranny. Telling people that they’re free to buy any car they want, so long as it’s a black 4-door sedan isn’t really free at all.I believe and so do most Liberals, that when we stand up for the rights of people we don’t even agree with, we’re defending something more profound in all of existence; a thing that has sadly been fleeting in all of human history (which we wish to see endure). In the seven thousand years of our recorded history, this period of “respect for the individual dignity, rights and liberties of all people” has been a scant hundred years at best†; a total flash in the pan.Many (though not all) conservatives have begun abandoning those principles in favor of a selective set of privileges that they take upon themselves to decide where and for whom they apply. Most liberals (like me) refuse to allow red herring fallacies to distract us. We refuse to allow the horrors done by some Muslims to taint all Muslims and to excuse stripping human beings —and that’s what Muslims are— of their inherent and inalienable rights.If we do that just this once, the next time it will be our neighbors. The time after that it will be our friends and family. Thereafter it will be ourselves.
