Guns of the Patriots is one of those games that people get fiercely defensive over, because they just can't stand to hear an opinion that differs from the popular view that it is a masterpiece.But this, like anything else, is subjective.I'm a big fan of the series, and I generally consider Metal Gear Solid to be the best video game made to date. I also loved MGS 2: Sons of Liberty and MGS 3: Subsistence, but I loathed MGS 4: Guns of the Patriots.The gameplay was alright and a few aspects of it were interesting, but there were one too many ridiculous elements put in there (mostly for comedic effect) that put a dampener on the whole thing.Without a shadow of a doubt the worst thing about this game was that it not only brought back the dreaded multi-loader, but it was probably the worst example of it.

Noam's answer is fantastic, but there are a few additional points I'd like to make:The first is a caveat to a point Noam made about ammunition selection. As he points out, an autoloader doesn't allow you to choose the type of the next round loaded into the breech. However, the newest generation of Abrams tanks, the M1A2 SEPv3, is being developed with what is known as an Ammunition Data Link, firing programmable 120mm AMP rounds. This round will effectively replace 4 types of rounds now in service: the M830 HEAT (High Explosive Anti Tank), the M830A1 MPAT (Multi-Purpose Anti Tank), the M1028 Canister (Anti Infantry), and the M908 (Obstacle Reduction). Though the Abrams is still loaded manually, this round would also work well with an autoloader.The main reason that the Abrams does not have an autoloader is to increase crew survivability. In the event of a direct hit to the tank's ammunition storage, the Abrams is designed to direct the blast away from the crew compartments. It does this by keeping the rounds behind a hydraulically driven door, which is stronger than the blow-off panels on top of the tank. To fetch a new round, the loader uses a knee switch to drive the door open momentarily.By contrast, an autoloader requires ammunition to be stored in a carousel directly beneath the turret basket, where any penetration by enemy fire will instantly kill the crew and likely blow the turret right out of the hull. Some newer autoloaders are designed with the ammo compartmentalized from the turret, as in the Abrams, but require the loading mechanism to be contained along with the ammo, sacrificing ammo capacity. For this reason, and those previously listed by Noam, a human loader is preferable to an automated one.

Because tankers like me would misuse it at every chance we had. And ammo is expensive…even when you buy it in multi- million-round lots and get a bulk discount.Also when you have a main gun that can destroy pretty much anything it encounters on the battlefield a mini-gun becomes insignificant and irrelevant.The 3 machine guns already mounted on the Abrams have three different and very specific missions assigned to each of them. A minigun would only be SOMEWHAT useful in ONE of the three locations (the loader’s station). And any experienced tanker can verify that no tank commander REALLY wants their fresh-outa-high school, fresh-from-the-block/fresh-off-the-farm, wanna-be gangster badass, loader to have that kind of firepower/possible giant disaster/possible giant international incident/possible war crime at their literal fingertips.
