However paraprofessionals are not invited to the meetings unless they have direct relation to the IEP. Example would be this para is assigned to one student only. Tim just graduated from Boston University with his masters in Biomedical engineering.One thing that I wanted to add is that the whole IEP team thought Tim’s answers were strange and part of his problem so their attitude was that he failed the questions because he couldn’t give typical answers.We need more room in our classrooms for kids who think differently and don’t always give the expected answer. Especially when you are considering a kid’s aptitude and where they will be placed academically.Original answer:Not actually taught, but tested on. I have three smart children, but my son, who is on the autism spectrum, is really amazingly smart. At one point, as part of his IEP, the school decided they wanted to do IQ testing. They did the Woodcock-Johnson cognitive abilities test on him.When we got the results back they said his combined IQ was 104. We were a little surprised and had them break it down for us. Turned out he did really badly on the general information section. So, being new to the Woodcock-Johnson test, we asked for examples of the types of questions and his answers so we could understand his deficit better.Here are the questions and answers they gave usThe moon is in the sky? True or false.Tim said false, because the sky includes the atmosphere and it is in space not the atmosphere.Name two coins. Tim said Sacagawea dollar and buffalo war nickel (Tim was a coin collector). They wanted penny, nickel, dime, quarter.Why do your parents tell you to turn off the lights? Tim said that power is a finite resource because most are petroleum or coal based and we need to not waste electricity when we can help it.They were looking for “save money.”We realized then that the school was not smart enough to test him. We got the school to send him to an external neuropsychologist and he tested above genius level.

I was once in an IEP meeting for a student who was behaviorally fine, but she didn’t do any work. She would mostly socialize in class.At our meeting we talked with mom and dad about things we could do to help her bring her grade up and the suggestion was put forward that we move her into a resource room class for science.A resource room class teaches the same material as a regular class but always has an ed tech in there, as well as a more structured program to help IEP students meet their goals. Their pace is a little slower and all the work is done in class so the teacher can keep the student accountable for their work. This would also keep this particular girl away from her friends who were a distraction to her.Mom tells us that she doesn’t want to do that since her daughter “would be upset by not being with her friends.” The teachers in the room all kind of look at each other with that “yeah, that’s kind of the point”.Another point of contention was her phone use in class. Our school has a no phone use policy during instructional time (8–2). Mom knows this is a problem and tells us that she took away her daughters phone a couple weeks ago, so she doesn’t know what phone she’s using. Dad pops in and tells us that he got her the phone.*Stunned silence from the teachers* The parents had no idea what the heck each other were doing.Many of us almost walked out of that meeting since it was obvious the kid ran the house and that the parents weren’t going to agree to anything that “made their daughter unhappy”The girl got so far behind that she never graduated.She’s probably unhappy.
