Flipped classrooms take a critical look at the structure of the typical classroom activities in the context of what is known from research about learning and motivation. The list still includes most of the fastest growing and highest paying: tattooing, traditional art programs, electricians to some degree, law (think clerks and paralegals), agricultural to some degree still, doctors, surgeons, and healthcare support staff, engineering, etc.The point is, it works better. Learning by doing while under the supervision of an expert. Teaching our students to work in this system is more valuable to them than knowing how to sit and be quiet. In fact, the modern “classroom” was an invention designed to train people in the basic skills (reading and arithmetic mostly) needed to work in the factories at the start of the industrial revolution and has never changed. In fact, those two activities are probably most valuable when done alone since you can do it at your own pace. Witness the huge popularity of YouTube and the rather less popular activity of watching a video in science class. There is a difference.Finally, the most sad part of science class is the “lab activities,” where students are told exactly what to do, what will happen, and how long it will take. For anyone who loves science, this is obviously taking all of the joy (emotion), experimentation (sensory), and discussion (social) parts out of the activity. Those are the three things mentioned earlier that lead to deep understandings, context, and learning. It becomes a fancy cake-baking activity, with a recipe made of complicated (because students still don’t understand them) vocabulary words.With this system, you have achieved something incredible. You have taken an activity that any 2 year old loves and any 5 year old loves more … an activity that is so natural and enjoyable to humans that it is universal in every culture, a human trait of curiosity about the world, testing it to see what happens, and building things to understand it more … an activity whose history can be back to the earliest writings known, that in fact is the very reason there were any “earliest writings known” … that pattern that is evident from infancy of investigating the world, experimenting with things, discovering patterns and relationships, and sharing those results with anyone who will listen … you have taken this uniquely human activity and turned it into a set of mindless annoying chores so abhorrent that nearly every student, upon reaching high school chemistry class, informs me that they don’t like science. “It is boring and difficult,” they say. “It is useless and irrelevant,” they say after they revive me from the first statement.When you look at it that way, with an open mind, it starts to make more sense…Flipping the classroom is one part of a philosophy of letting the kids DO science. Science is about doing. How many science vocabulary words do you think a 5 year old knows? Not a lot, I’m betting. Do they still like mixing chemicals together to see what happens? Do they still like playing with magnets? Do they still like seeing how animals behave in different situations? Compare this list to the one above, point by point, and I think it gets the idea across as much as any forum post can:Students organize into groups depending on the task and goals. They get to choose things, like who does what job, how to go about it, how to manage their time, and how to share the ideas with everyone else. They should talk and listen to each other, because that is what humans do, while they actively move around into an efficient group structure. Maybe sitting, maybe standing, maybe 2 kids, maybe 4 kids, maybe inside, maybe outside. Always designed for the task, not some blind rules about desks and rows.Overall goals are given by the teacher, but students decide how to get it done. This takes training and scaffolding, to be sure, but not as much as you might think. In less than a month, I can have students doing everything I will type here. You know why? Because I am a genius? No … because they have been doing it since they were one year old! This is the way kids naturally do things when you leave them alone. They just need to be focused a bit more on the tasks and safety concerns. An that vocabulary stuff? It will come along, but not at the start when it means nothing. If you don’t need a new word to describe something, don’t use one! It is a waste of time and energy. Once an understanding of a phenomena is developed, vocabulary words can be added where they are needed.I have a saying: I got all A’s in my college chemistry classes. I don’t need the practice, you do. Anytime I’m doing something you could be doing, I’m cheating you out of your practice. All of this thinking and explaining and reading and such that teachers do? Most of it can be done for homework. Do you really need a teacher with 6 years of college and tremendous insights into the psychology and motivations of adolescents to be doing something equivalent to producing a YouTube video over and over all day long? Record it once and be done with it. High school kids do not need help listening to someone talk, reading a few pages, or looking at a PowerPoint. Those are the things they can do perfectly well on their own. And they do … for homework. If the teacher is doing all of the thinking in the classroom, guess who isn’t …Stop. Just stop. Even the most ardent supporters of the “teachers are sharing the knowledge” camps must be giving up at this point. Anything that anyone knows can be looked up on Google at this point. Teach the kids about choosing good search terms and choosing reputable sources. Leave the rest to Google and YouTube. They are better at producing good content and the time you save is tremendous. It is so much more valuable when used for having students think and create and discover, instead of mindlessly staring at a white board in a dark room and writing down random stuff that they already have in an outdated book and one million hits on Google search in less than one second. Unless you are teaching students who genuinely need practice reading or writing, leave it alone … just relax and let it go. Are there exceptions? Yes. Explaining overall goals for a new unit? Explaining safety precautions? Yes, of course. But if you only do it a few times a month, students will humor you and pay attention.Demos are wonderful … IF they contain a novel experience or discrepant even that you can assume most students have not seen or at least have not understood. The most …. important … part …. is … this: Don’t tell them what to think. That’s it. Don’t explain anything, don’t describe anything, let it all be a surprise and the louder the better. Have them write down what they observe and a hypothesis of what could be causing it. Compare notes. Ask how they could test it further. Stuff like that… Let … the …. kids …. do … the … thinking. It may be hard to break the habit of “sharing your valuable cache of knowledge,” but leave your ego at home today and let the kids learn instead.Some things just take practice. Math problems, especially when students are still learning Algebra 1, do require some modeling and guidance. But after the initial modeling, step back and only help when asked. It is also much better to have done some activity and collected some real data before doing the math so that the numbers mean something. Don’t keep blindly doing the thinking for them. It cheats them out of their learning. Tell students to ask peers before teacher (“ask 3 before me” or similar). This encourages collaboration and has the wonderful side effect of engaging the number one strategy for learning anything - even better than the number 2 of hands-on investigations - teaching someone else. (I can hear myself saying, “I don’t need the practice …”)Just don’t do things in class that are obviously easily successful solo activities, like watching YouTube videos or reading slideshows. Does that mean every student will do it? No. But every student “can” do it, and that is where we draw the line. Time is short. We only have 187 days of school, and a full 10% of them are taken up with distractions, another 10% with fire drills, assemblies, pep rallies. Mondays make up approximately 20% of those days, too, and you just never know how much will get done on a Monday. Time is short. Do the things in class that MUST be done in class. Leave everything else for the backpack or the trash pile. Be efficient. Don’t do things just because “everyone else is.” “Everyone else” has been wrong for 50 years and data is showing it. The people who are right are the doctors, lawyers, engineers, artists, and electricians who never stopped doing it the way that works best.Lab activities should be the cornerstone of the science class. All other activities flow from that. Science is about DOING and labs are the doing of science. Vocabulary comes from labs when you need a better word. Data for practice problems comes from labs. Homework, researching, debating, competing, sharing results, drawing graphs, documenting in notebooks, creating websites, uploading student YouTube videos, engineering design challenges, science fair projects, job skills, speaking and listening skills, technology skills … literally everything else you do in a science class is linked back, node by node, to the foundation of the lab experiences. And the best part?With this system, you have also achieved something incredible. The kids love labs and investigation as the foundation of the class. Every year, it is their favorite thing. They get to remember being 5 years old again, before “everyone” told them that the way they learned since they were 2 was wrong. Before they were taught to not be excited, but instead sit quietly in neat rows and learn how to be bored politely.You tell them they were right and the joy in their heart reaches all the way back to 2 years old. They knew it. In their bones, they just knew it. The most exciting things in life just couldn’t be wrong. When they are successful with their friends and family, it is never by being bored quietly and in neat rows. When they go around town to the restaurant, the mall, the grocery store, nobody is sitting quietly in neat rows.They know this isn’t true. They know it is some sort of authoritarian trick to force certain behaviors. It almost seems like a psychological experiment to see how long they can stand it before they go insane. Tell them they were right. You can’t fix every class, just yours, but at least they know they aren’t crazy. They will love you for it. They will learn more than you ever imagined.It does take a ton of work and planning and management, but it works so well. Once you know it and see it, you really cannot in good conscience do it the old way again. You cannot “un-know” this once you see the truth.

More specifically, how do the schools compare in Mechanical Engineering?A2A: I am not an engineer and this topic should be addressed by mechanical engineers on Quora. I will take a stab at it in the meantime. It has been awhile since I was an undergraduate at Rice. I try to be involved by being an alumnus interviewer.There are so many different rankings for engineering programs that have no consistency. Many mostly deal with graduate engineering schools. Among those, Rice’s small size is a disadvantage. Rice chooses to do certain things very well. Its commitment to undergraduate education makes the George R. Brown School a good program. Class size is smaller, easier to interact with professors and plenty of opportunities to participate in research.Students are of high caliber, hard working and hard playing. There is more camaraderie than competition. Almost everyone lives on campus and is active in intramural sports/clubs, organizations. Students are assigned to colleges/dorms with affiliation lasting through to graduation. There is close collaboration in doing difficult homework, exam preparation. In addition to the College Master, whose family lives in the building/or attached housing, many faculty members are assigned to the colleges and take their lunch meals there. In upper level classes, there may just be 2–3 students. Certain classes we get to choose when to meet, bring the donuts and the professors the coffees, even in the evenings. Rice is perennially ranked #1 in student satisfaction/quality of life. Rice’s location in Houston (4th largest city in the US) is advantageous, de facto the Energy capital of the world. (There are more than 70 foreign consulates in Houston). Close interaction with NASA LBJ Space Center is a plus. Plenty of companies recruit on campus. There is a strong alumni network with available mentoring.Rice’s other strength is the preponderance of double/triple majors and national reputation. This should help in applying for graduate schools. Non-major electives are strong across the board. The life sciences and biomedical engineering departments are well regarded, often there are collaboration between Rice and other institutions in the adjacent world’s largest Texas Medical Center (Baylor College of Medicine, UT Houston McGovern Medical School, University of Texas Dental Branch, #1 ranking MD Anderson Cancer Center, and Texas Heart Institute to name a few). It is tougher to get into Rice then to graduate from Rice.What I have included here a listing of Fortune 500 companies headquartered in Houston, valuable for internship and employment.Selectivity of Rice.Princeton ranking of colleges. The costs may look disproportionate. But Rice does offer a lot of financial aid.Finally, there is a USN top 10 ranking of Undergraduate Mechanical Engineering Programs. Unfortunately, neither school made the list.I would consider Rice over Maryland if accepted and offered adequate financial aid. Undergraduates at Rice are not short changed. Rice students do not have to declare a major until the end of sophomore year, and it is easy to change or add major. With the option of taking 4 classes Pass/Fail, you can sample the curriculum without damaging your GPA. With a strong Honor Code, some courses offer take home exams (open or closed book) to not waste class time. There are also self-paced courses. For some courses, you schedule your final in the two weeks before the end of the semester so that you can best strategize exam preparation. If you change your major, Rice’s other departments are world class. The upstart Jones School of Business has steadily climbed in ranking. Baker Center for Public Policy has become a major think tank. The college experience will be pleasant. And Houston is a great town to explore. Students can ride the mass transit system for free. This campus is among the most beautiful, and is located in an upscale part of town. The Rice Village is a nearby shopping center with high end and low end shops. Next to Rice University is the huge Texas Medical Center, as well as the Houston Museum District. Galveston beach is only 45 minutes away.For graduate school, a larger department maybe more alluring. UT Austin/ Texas A&M and U Houston are not too far away. But many graduates go farther afield to Stanford, MIT, Cal Tech etc.University of Maryland does look like a very good school.
