PDF Editor FAQ
Is there an unofficial agreement between the software companies, and the current administration? Were any rules passed behind closed doors in US banning software companies to hire non-citizen/non-GC holders?
No “closed door” meeting would be disclosed to you on a public site like Quora anyway, since it would immediately cause the person who discussed it to be arrested by the FBI for espionage, and likely result in them losing their security clearance. That out of the way, there are many jobs for which you cannot be hired without a U.S. citizenship, because that’s required for a security clearance.Even if you are a U.S. citizen, you might not get the security clearance, and that will mean that you don’t get hired. There are a few jobs that require “at least a green card, but not citizenship”; jobs in that category almost always prefer U.S. citizens. Those jobs aren’t listed that way of course, because they aren’t going to state a minimum requirement that could be a search filter on a job site. Here’s a job you can’t have:RaytheonAdministrative AssociateRequisition ID 101189BRDate updated 08/04/2017Raytheon is seeking an Administrative Associate who will support a small customer registry center. What is this job? It’s a job as a mail room clerk. Why can’t you have it?U.S. Citizenship and an active TS/SCI security clearance with Poly Required (Must be Crossover Eligible)Education: High School or equivalent with 2 plus years of experienceThat’s not you. They will take a football player with a C average from a terrible high school in the worst school district in the U.S. before they will hire you. What’s another one?AltimiraJunior Software Engineer / Web DeveloperJob Req ID: 2164Experience with Ruby/RailsExperience with front-end scripting languages and libraries – JavaScript, Sencha Ext JSWhy can’t you have that one?Active TS/SCI Security Clearance with favorable polygraphThat’s right: Someone can be a high school dropout who has gone to one of those six week coding bootcamps that teaches you how to open the JavaScript console to look for errors, and then iteratively poke at things until the errors go away. They will hire them, before they hire you. There’s absolutely nothing “closed door” about any of this.No citizenship? No job.If you’re trying to work remotely? No one wants you unless you can spend at least several months — usually 6 — on site, convincing your manager that you can be trusted to work remotely. And then you will last a year, maybe two, if the company uses stacked ranking, and has an annual review process, because you will be thrown under the bus by the people on your team who never met you in person, and really have zero personal relationship with you.Because you can’t really have those things via email. You are definitely not going on the team building exercises, or the group lunch for “Bob” who just got married, and you’re not signing the birthday cards they pass around, and you’re not chipping in for flowers for “Mabel”, whose “Great Aunt Martha” had a terrible car accident (she wasn’t seriously injured, which is good; the 37 passengers on the bus she was driving… well… that’s another story). If someone has to choose between the person she plays racquet ball with, or a really good coder in Karachi Pakistan who she’s never met?Racquet ball wins.Managers know this; they have zero control over the process (the CEO set up the process because he idolizes Andy Grove of Intel, and that’s what Andy Grove did, so that’s what he’s going to do), and they really don’t want to waste time hiring someone who’s going to be gone next review cycle. Why waste the investment of time and energy? So don’t worry about conspiracy theories. There are plenty of reasons for companies not to hire you, if you aren’t a citizen, a green card holder, or capable of qualifying for an H-1B visa in the months of January, February, or March — before the H-1B quota gets exhausted.
Was Carrie Lam's husband, Dr. Lam Siu-por, protesting to Xi Jinping in the Macau ceremony on 19 Dec 2019, by not clapping his hands, not singing anthem and not smiling, even though he was at frontline of the guests with Xi Jinping?
Normally, this kind of non-issue event blown up by the Hong Kong media does not deserve that much attention. Except of course, in the current political climate in Hong Kong.I am critical of CE Carrie Lam for her inadequate, ineffective actions and policies in dealing with the self-destructive Hong Kong riots and protests. However, in this case, I thought maybe it is important and worthwhile to highlight some facts and points that have been missed by both the “yellow” and “blue” side of the political spectrum.IS IT IMPOLITE OR EVEN PROTESTING FOR JUST STANDING WHILE OTHERS ARE SINGING A PATRIOTIC SONG?For a non-political and “simple” person, I think Dr. Lam may not have any intended political overtone.Dr. Lam Siu Por attended the event as spouse of Hong Kong CE. The fact that he attended and in one of his better dress etiquette should be viewed as DUTYFULL as a loving husband.Dr. Lam was STANDING POLITELY while others were singing and clapping. He did not choose to sit down or showing any gesture or disrespect. BTW, the song is not national anthem. It is just a famous motherland loving song that all Chinese brought up in mainland knows (not for most Hong Kong residents). As a matter of etiquette, that is more than adequate for a well-known exceptionally non-political savvy and socially awkward academician. The attempt by some from the “blue side” that tried to justify, albeit unnecessarily, that he may have suffered a stroke is unlikely to be true. The fact that he was POLITELY HOLDING FIRMLY his right wrist with his left hand indicated he is definitely having no issue with his mobility.SOME MORE RELEVANT FACTS OF DR. LAM SIU POR AS A IMMIGRANT CITIZEN OF UK, HONG KONG RESIDENTS AND HUSBAND OF THE FIRST FEMALE HONG KONG CHIEF EXECUTIVEDr. Lam Siu Por was born, 1954, in Hong Kong. He attended middle school of Maryknoll Fathers’ School and University of Hong Kong (same as Carrie Lam but a few years ahead). He graduated with Ph.D. in Mathematics from Cambridge University in 1983. Pretty normal education route with laudable academic achievement.Dr. Lam Siu Por (林兆波)(F5-1971) and Dr. Fong Lung Ying (方龍英)(F5-1981) return from overseas to visit their alma mater on the 14th of July, 2010. Maryknoll Fathers' School - 瑪利諾神父教會學校 (Characterization of Dr. Lam being a “simple” person by his wife Carrie Lam is clearly apt and appropriate by him being one of the worst dressed among the four high school alumnae.)Dr. Lam married Carrie in 1984 and retired as Associate Professor from Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2003. ( https://scholars.croucher.org.hk/scholars/lam-siu-por)We do not know how and when did Dr. Lam became a British citizen. But the fact that he maintained his CHINESE NAME COMPLETELY AS NATURALIZED BRITISH CITIZEN is not the easiest and most convenient thing to do. It may even be interpreted as statement of some sort?Apparently, Dr. Lam was responsible for taking care of their two sons’ higher education period in England after 2003. That may be the time that he got his family the British citizenship? It is well-known and nothing usual for high level Hong Kong public servants in the colonial era to be allotted with UK citizenship. There were rumors that over 60,000 of those faithfully served the British empire have been given the rights that they can claim anytime.Dr. Lam also taught several courses at the Capital Normal University in Beijing. (https://scholars.croucher.org.hk/scholars/lam-siu-por)Dr. Lam obviously loves his mathematics besides his wife and two kids.Willingness to stay in Beijing to teach Chinese students with Chinese pay (not much, I am afraid) must be lauded. As recently as March, 2019, Dr. Lam still lectured in China on his beloved mathematics.题 目:A generalization of the Atiyah-Segal completion theorem for the equivariant Real K-theory报告人:林兆波教授 (Hong Kong)时间: 3月1日(周五)下午2:00开始 (2019)地点:首都师范大学本部教二楼627教室Dr. Lam also self-proclaimed as non-political and only know pure mathematics. He said he did not know much about politics, after reporters asked for his take on the leadership candidate nominations: “I don’t care much about this, I am sorry.” “I only know pure mathematics,” the former Chinese University associate professor said. “I am just a normal person, spare me.”(Dr. Lam was known to be dressed INAPPROPRIATELY (highlighted in blue circle by the author) in the most important political event.) 由於他在公開場合多次穿著被視為時尚禁忌的白襪配上黑鞋的打扮,因而被傳媒戲稱爲「白襪仔」。(Siu-Por Lam: Spouse of Carrie Lam - Biography, Life, Family, Career, Facts, Information )“I support my wife indefinitely,” he said.Mrs. Carrie Lam with her husband of 32 years, Mr. Lam Siu Por, after her win yesterday. NRI's in USA: What are the suggestions you could give to new immigrant students/employees to help them have better life/career in USA?
My suggestions:For New Students (before coming to the US and after coming to the US {the first month or so})Prepare well for your course of study by reaching out Senior students in your university and getting advance information about the in demand courses in the local market near your university.[You can get some training in advance for the tougher courses for your study in the US]2. Do a deep dive about the location where you are going to study. [This will give you an idea about the cost of living, transportation needs, job market, security, Internship opportunities,etc]3. Don't join nameless universities/Schools in the US (it is better to stay back in your native country rather than studying in some fraud nameless university in the US). If you don’t get admitted to a university ranked within the top 200 (search for : US university ranking in US News in a search engine), avoid coming to the US(bad no name universities will not contribute much to your career)4. If you have very bad grades, failed a lot of courses in your undergrad [for Masters in the US] or 12th Grade [For your Undergrad in the US] it is very difficult to get admission from a good university in the US.5. Studying in good universities in the US is worth the cost. If we complicate the expectation with [a] Guaranteed job in the US and [b] Guaranteed Citizenship in the US, then be prepared for some disappointment, since F-1 visa doesn’t guarantee that at this point in time (Good quality education should be the primary motive here)For New Employees Coming to the US on H1BGet a good understanding of the location where you will be working from your colleagues who are working already.Plan in advance for [a] Monthly expenses (you usually are paid Bi-weekly in the US] [b] Daily transportation to and from work [c] Where you will be staying (be part of the rental lease and don’t try to push that burden on others avoiding the risk, be respectful of others)Maintain your rental apartment/house properlyGet [a] SSN [Social Security Number] [b] Bank Account [c]Driver’s License as quickly as possible (if you need a car, buy a new car, don’t go for old used cars if you can manage the cost) .Make sure your communication skills are up to scratch, speak slowly and understand others before speaking (give opportunity to others to speak)Speak slowly, short sentences and wait for others to talk/respond.Smile, and be friendly with others.Get an agreement with your work sponsoring organization to start your green card process and push them to get things done without failAlways review the immigration documents your Lawyer is submitting (if you have that opportunity) this will avoid a lot of RFEsOnce your green card process has started, stop obsessing over it (despite the unbearable painful conversations in and around you from various corners) {assuming everything went well with your green card process {employment based} you will get your green card anywhere from 2 to 20 years, based on category {Eb1/Eb2/Eb3} and your country of birth. You must and should have health insurance, dental insurance and eye care insurance.15. Go for regular yearly health ,dental and eye care check without fail.16. Don’t neglect your health and go outside for sports or walking or running {Health is wealth, your H1B/GC/Citizenship are of no use if you have major health issues}17. Have insurance for everything worth the cost {no insurance will prove very very costly, don’t listen to the “jugaad cost cutting crazy friend ideas here”}18. Look for better career opportunities every 3 to 4 years and jump the ship {yes, despite the H1B constraint you can change jobs and make good money, I am an Associate director in a major MNC and see several H1B based employees getting new jobs, moving to other organizations on a weekly basis with good success}19. Make friends, socialize, go to farmers markets, state fairs , clubbing, sports activities and enjoy life (don’t spend the remainder part after your work hours cribbing over some non-sense immigration issue that you cannot change)20.
