If I had the option to take the night shift, whether that be afternoon to midnightish, or early evening to past midnight, or from late at night to early in the morning, I would take it.Here’s why. First, I don’t like getting up in the morning, and it’s definitely nice to work on a sleep cycle that I don’t spring out of the moment I get a day off.More importantly, night shift gives you more access to medical care. Most doctors, especially specialists, only work during the day. That means that if you need to visit them, you need to take time off work. If your workplace has a limited pool of time you can use to take time off work, or if there are problems with FMLA (fun fact: a third of FMLA applications are rejected), then you might get punished for seeing the doctor. If you work a night shift, then you might have to give up sleep to see a doctor in an hour when you’d normally be sleeping, but you won’t get fired.The only thing which gives me pause in concerts and events. Concerts, lectures, meetups, and pretty much anything else you might do outside of home or work are generally at a time of day which people who have daytime jobs can get to, which means that they’d be at hours when you’d be at work (or sleeping). From that perspective, a job which doesn’t start until midnight is preferable to the other timeslots, since your job wouldn’t start until most of those events have ended.(This is actually how it plays out where I work. Everyone wants to get to first shift, because it is most closely aligned with the rest of the world.
