CS 61B Spring 2016 : You can follow this course (By follow I mean doing all assignments and quizzes, not just videos)Index of /~sri/cs213 : This is for quick reference(can be used for quick revision too) of what you need to learn as a beginner (Also has assignments)Studying from short notes will ultimately lead you to be a mediocre - This is my personal belief , Either follow a book like Cormen or some great course from Stanford/MIT/Berkeley (All things including videos, book readings , assignments etc)NOW WHATEVER I TOLD YOU TILL NOW IS FOR 50–60% ONLY ,for rest you have to make yourself comfortable with these DS by programming (Visit Hackerrank/codechef and make a commitment that I have to be x* coder or have this much rank in given time)Adios
What recognized country is most likely to be erased off the map?
Last updated in May 2018Look at this map:It's visualizing the Fragile States Index - Wikipedia. Red is bad. All the data is from The Fund for PeaceHere are the updated maps for 2016 and for the 2018Top ten fragile states in 2018 were (updated in 10/2018):South Sudan (2 in 2016)Somalia (1)Yemen (4)Syria (6)Central African Republic (3)Democratic Republic of the Congo (8)Sudan (4)Chad (7)Afghanistan (9)Zimbabwe (16)Full list: Global Data | Fragile States IndexVenezuela still hasn’t made it to the top of the list, in spite of the recent efforts.Out of these ten, a closer inspection shows strong long term worsening trends for Yemen, Syria, Central African Republic and Congo Democratic Republic.South Sudan and Somalia can hardly get any worse. Sudan is slightly improving, Chad and Afghanistan are more or less unchanged. Surprisingly, Zimbabwe has actually improved a lot compared to its worst showing in 2009. In any case, these countries are good places to avoid. Two interesting cases among the rather fragile states are Libya and Cote d’Ivoire - currently ranked equally at 25-th place (94,6 points). In 2006, Cote d’Ivoire was ranked 3-rd (109,2 points) and gradually improved over time. Back then, Libya was ranked 95-th (68,5 points). Arab Spring didn’t do them much good, I’m afraid. On the bottom of the list (least fragile), we still have the usual suspects: Finland, Norway, Switzerland, Denmark, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Australia, Sweden etc.USA (Trump) and UK (Brexit) are two interesting countries to look at.USA (37,7 points in 2018, place 154 out of 178 - see Country Dashboard) shows a rather unpleasant development trend, mainly driven by three “cohesion indicators” (C1: Security Apparatus, C2: Factionalized Elites and , C3: Group Grievance). Things did get worse since 2016, but there is no big trend change visible in the data.United Kingdom (34,3 points in 2018, place 159) shows no overall worsening trend over the longer period. It does show a similar trend to USA for cohesion indicators - especially since 2016. Other than that, Brexit isn’t really visible in the UK indicators. To put this in perspective, there are 12 sub-indicators, and each of them can be between 0 (best) and 10 (worst). The average indicator value for USA is thus 37.7/12 = 3,14, so 6.1 for “Group Grievance” and 5.8 for “Factionalized Elites” does look somewhat alerting to me.For UK, the average is 34,3/12= 2,86; for Germany 25,8/12 = 2,15 and for Finland 17,9/12=1,49.On the other side of the list, Zimbabwe features an average of 102.3/12 = 8.5 and South Sudan features an average of 113,4/12=9.43.Top ten fragile states in 2016 were:Somalia (+1)South Sudan (-1)Central African Republic (0)Sudan (0)Yemen (+3)Syria (+3)Chad (-1)Democratic Republic of the Congo (-3)Afghanistan (0)Haiti (+1)Iraq is no. 11.Full list: The Fragile States Index 2016Right now (2016), Syria may still have the best chance of losing part of its territory. Iraq has de facto already lost the north, they just haven't fully realised this.As for the states that are likely to completely disappear, my favourite is the North Korea. East Germany was eventually swallowed back into the West Germany and North Korea will eventually follow the same path.
How many rows can you have in excel before it starts lagging for the average desktop computer?
Excel starts lagging when you have too many formula dependencies in the calculation tree or when you have too many cells with volatile functions. Until that happens, you can happily fill up all 1,048,576 rows in each worksheet. Not enough memory64-bit Excel 2010 and later can use up to 8 TB of RAM. That’s 500 times more RAM than I have on my high-end laptop, so your wallet will run out of money before 64-bit Excel runs out of its ability to use it.Microsoft increased the amount of memory available to 32-bit Excel 2013 and later with the Large Address Aware patch in Spring 2016. Before then, 32-bit Excel was limited to 2 GB of RAM. Prior to this patch, some people using 32-bit Excel 2016 complained about either “too many formats” errors or sluggish response on large workbooks where they hadn’t seen it with earlier versions. This was because Excel 2016 includes the Power BI functionality that was previously optional in earlier version, thus consuming more of the available RAM. The patch, which every Excel user has been using since Summer 2016, fixed both problems and gave a significant increase to amount of memory available for your workbooks. If you use 64-bit Windows (most computers), you can now use 4 GB of RAM with 32-bit Excel. If you have such an old computer that it uses 32-bit Windows, then the patch still increased the usable RAM by 50% to 3 GB.You should also note that Excel will use your hard drive if the amount of addressable RAM is insufficient. So if you hear your hard drive churning or see its light flashing while your workbook is being edited, then you could benefit from more RAM.Volatile functionsVolatile cells are recalculated every time a change is made to any cell in any open workbook. When you have a lot of volatile cells, the burden of recalculating them will cause an annoying delay after each time you hit the Enter button. How many are too many? A thousand volatile cells shouldn’t cause a noticeable delay in modern computers, but tens of thousands likely will. Knowing this, I try to post non-volatile formulas when answering help forum questions for the past 15 years. And when asked to consult on a sluggish workbook, volatile cells are one of the first things I check for.A cell is marked volatile if it contains a formula that uses a volatile function, even if that function is never evaluated. The volatile functions are RAND, RANDBETWEEN, INDIRECT, OFFSET, NOW, TODAY, CELL and INFO. Contrary to statements by others, ROWS, COLUMNS, AREAS and SUMIFS are not volatile. If you want to test whether a function is volatile, Microsoft Excel MVP Charles Williams posted a workbook link in his webpage on volatile Excel functions. You should be aware that Conditional Formats are also treated as volatile. So if you apply Conditional Formatting to tens of thousands of cells, those will slow your workbook down.Dependency treeExcel maintains a list called the dependency tree that tells it which cells need to be recalculated when other cells change values. In Excel 2003 and earlier, the dependency tree was limited in size, and you would sometimes see CALCULATE in the status bar as a sign that you tried to exceed it. When you see CALCULATE, every cell gets recalculated after each change—obviously something that you would describe as “sluggish.” Those limits were removed in Excel 2007, and we don’t see CALCULATE anywhere near as often.VLOOKUP abuseIf your workbook has a gazillion VLOOKUP formulas, you should be aware that they recalculate whenever any cell in the lookup table changes. If you are editing that lookup table, the resulting delay after each Enter can be annoying. As a workaround, consider replacing your VLOOKUP formulas with INDEX & MATCH. Better yet, put the MATCH in an auxiliary column. Either way, restrict the INDEX function to work on a single column, and use the MATCH result to return the desired values.
