Your problem isn’t the lack of a checklist, but rather the overabundance of competing checklists that apply somewhat but not completely to your situation.Do a lean business plan. Not a big formal business plan, but just a lean plan for you to use to define, for yourself, the steps you need to take. There’s no substitute for taking the time to lay it out where you can see what you need to start, how much that costs, how much time it will take, what reasonable expectations are. However this is more due to a popular manufacturer than an actual equipment name. You’ve received all great answers from experienced pilots. As a psychometrician and safety advocate, allow me to add some recommendations.Get instrument rated. NTSB accident reports are full of VFR pilots who ran into a stray cloud or fog bank and simply panicked. If you think it can’t happen to you I would respectfully suggest the no one does…until it happens.Practice stall and recovery with a good instructor. Even experienced pilots miss the obvious and pull back on the stick when the plane seems to want to fall. Some figure it out in time, some don’t. You don’t want to be a don’t.Which brings me a REALLY important issue for safety: Self AwarenessAdult learning is sometimes broken down into four phases. The lowest level is Unconsciously Incompetent, which is when you know nothing about a subject and are completely unaware of what you don’t know. When you’re in flight school you generally become Consciously Incompetent. That’s the phase where you are familiar enough with a subject to know what you have to learn, but you haven’t mastered it yet. With enough study and practice you move to Consciously Competent, and as long as you’re extremely focused and meticulous you can perform a task adequately. The highest level is Unconsciously Competent, which is where most people who drive a car, golf or use a computer end up. With repetition and practice you can accomplish everything you need or want to do, and you don’t even have to think about it. Ever finish a familiar drive and have little to no memory of how you got to your destination? That’s Unconsciously Competent. To be a truly safe pilot, however, you have to abandon that stage and return to Consciously Competent. Checklists, flight plans, weather reports, NOTAMs are not things that you look at with the “I’ve done this all before” mindset. You have to approach each flight as though it were your first cross-country, only MORE carefully because no one is looking over your shoulder making sure you don’t miss anything.(BTW, before anyone takes me to task for this, yes…automobile drivers should follow this advice as well. The world’s an imperfect place…)If you know yourself well enough to predict that eventually you’ll see an approaching storm and think “I can make it”, don’t be a pilot. If you’ve ever run out of gas in your car, think about how it happened and whether you can really control the impulses that led you to ignore a gauge and a warning light for 30–50 miles. If you’re not 100% sure that you can ALWAYS follow rules and procedures, and that you’ll never succumb to “gotta-get-there-itis”, let someone else do the flying.Look at NTSB reports and become a student, not just of flying, but of crashing.
