What's your confession story (as an Indian teenager)?
This is gonna be a long and sad story.Mid 2013, I used to like a guy, call him X. He was literally handsome. We were in 8th standard. I got to know from my other friends that he also likes me. His mother was English teacher in our school. Time passed. And we were promoted to 9th standard.2014, in our school there was a rule to reshuffle the students in different sections in 9th standard. So I was in E section and X was in C section. On fb, on of my senior(was was a very good friend of mine) asked me how I feel about X, I said I like him, he said he will ask X about it. He asked X next day and guess what he was interested in me. I tried to talk to him but he ignored me everytime. I made some new friends in my new class, they were good(what I used to think, but reality was different) one of my friend (call R)was in relation with X's friend. So, after sometime, it was may,2014, R asked X about me. He said he truly loves me and will love me only. R told me about this, I was delighted. X didn't had any fb account as his parents were strict. after some days summer vacations started. 50 days without school. I was fb addict that time. I used fb 6–7 hrs daily. I had some good friend on fb. On the day when our summer vacations started I got a friend request of X on fb. I immediately accepted that and I was on the seventh sky that day.Summer vacations began. I waited for him 10 hrs daily but he didn't come. 20 days passed, and finally he came online and liked all my posts and pics. And the chat began, we talked a little, and finally I proposed him, he immediately said yes as if he was deadly waiting for this.I had no way to contact him. After 8–9 days I saw him online, I immediately texted I love you, and my problems started here, it was X's dad who was using his profile that time. His dad texted me “I am X's dad talking to you on behalf of him” I immediately replied sorry uncle. And log out. After sometime I messaged a common friend of me and X and asked him about what happened because our common friend used to live near X house. He said he is fine nothing that big happened he said to his dad he don't know you, I took a sigh of relief. After some days X blocked me. I was shocked but then I thought it could be his dad. I asked our common friend that I want to talk to X he promised he will definitely do something and somehow gave me his number and said that I can call him next day between 10–3pm, I agreed.Next day when I called him, X picked up the call.Me: hey, is this X's phone number.X: oh ho!! finally you calledAnd then we talked.for almost half and hour. It was 17th june. I remember the date. After that no sign of talk or anything. After some 10 days or more school reopened. As usual in school, X ignored me. I told R about that X and I are in relationship. R said she is ahppy for me. I tried to talk to X but he ignored me. Then I asked R if she could do anything, and she asked X about all this, he said his parents come to know about our relationship and his dad said if he will ever talk to me again his dad will break his legs. I was shattered. Everything was over. I tried to forgot him. X's mom used to teach in our school but she didn't knew because she never had any session and class with me. But suddenly she started staring me all the time, though she wasnt my teacher but still she used to stare me every time. Meanwhile I was stewed up totally. I was going out if hands. I started bunking class with R to have some fun, we used to bunk 2–3 classes daily. A month passed and out exams ended.1st August 2014,This was the day when my problems started. Our computer teacher called R and asked about her fb account. She said its hacked by her cousin. R told all this to me, one of my friend said to me “ye toofaan se pehle ki shaanti hai” (this is the peace before a big trouble), next day, my another computer teacher came and asked about me to R. She asked R what kind of student I am? Am I good? And she said X's mother said that this girl is a kind of slut. R told all this to me I kept quit. In next class X's mother called R and said to stay away from me. And said to send me as well, when I faced her mother I was literally crying from inside. His.mother said she won't take any actions. But what she did was unexpected, she told all this to evey teacher in the school defending his son and proving me wrong. I said her sorry and requested her not to say anything like this about me. She agreed. After 2–3 days, my computer teacher again asked R about me. This time water was above my head. X used to live behind my school, I went their with my friend at their house because X's mother was absent that day so I decided to go there. And asked her about all this she is doing with me, she said she didn't do anything and won't do anything as well. I thought she is serious now.Next day X's mother told my class teacher everything about the incident. After the class classteacher(CT) called me and R. R didn't get a big lecture, but i was about to die. CT called me and X from his class and ask about our relationship, he said mam I didn't do anything she started first she said she love me, I was like what kind of man you are! After all that she said X to go back to his class, and she asked me to give her my fb password and ID. I didn't had any choice and I gave it to her. She asked me about my dad’s numer, i said mam he is in crime branch so i cant give you his number. So i gave her my mom number (i knew my mom dont pick calls from unknown numbers)I told all this to R and my other 2 friends, and we all immediately went to the IT lab, and somehow managed to delete everything from my ID including chats with everyone and all of my fb friends. I talk a sigh of relief. Time passed and the 2nd last class came. Our maths teacher came, call him M. He was genuinely a strict coward he used to beat everyone like criminal. He came and said those who didn't do homework please stand up. 95% class stood up and I was one of them along with my friends, he came near me, and said “tumhari class me fb se related bohot drama ho raha hai nah?” I was like what?? This was only thing that left. He said okay let's do one thing, boys sit and girls raise your hands. Some of boys were making faces while looking at me, I was already frustrated and said, sir, its not fare! Why you made girls to stand ? His ego hurted, he said everyone sit only you will stand raising your arms on your toes. It was painful. He said oh this seems like you are not feeling guilty if what you said to me, come in front if me and stand here raise your hands and stand in your toes, it was less than a meter distance between me and him, I was unable to make my balance, I said I can't do this anymore, he said fine get out of my class, I said fine even I paid the fees did you get that and after saying this I came out of the class. And I was sitting there fir 1 hr. After going home I told all this to my mom everything about X and M and finally mom agreed that she will come with me on Monday, as this incident took place if Friday and there was holiday of 2 days.M was taking private tutions, which was not allowed in our school if school principal would have come to know this he will throw M away. M was teacher 2 of my friends in his private tuition classes. And I was ready to tell all this to principal. I got a call from one of my friend, he said yar, its your fault. You wouldn't have should all this to M sir. And in anger I abused M on the phone. M was there with my friend and recorded the phone convo in his phone and I didn't knew all this.Monday, 12 2014R was ignoring me, I was shocked what happened, suddenly those friends who used to say they were fought by M said they were lying this said all this just to appear cool. I was shocked what is happening all this? Soon after my mom came, I took her to my class teacher, she said my mom and my mom said sorry for all this and then she took my mom to come to office of the school where M was waiting, and M was totally blaming me, they didn't even allow my mim to say anything, my mim said please wait my husband will come he will talk to you tomorrow, but to my fate, they said no mam principle is calling you. Meanwhile my CT went to class and said all the students to write review about me(in case if there will be a police case, and threatened them if even I single person will. Write in favour of me then that won't be good for that kid) I got a extreme bad review. For the first time mask teared off. I was able to see real faces of people. R went to M and said Sir please save me, M said don't worry be on my side I won't say anything against you. M said to principal, sir see what these kids do on fb, he completely named me, I don't even have words to define my situation. M show the voice recorded and whole situtation turned me like as if i am the only one involved in this. They were behaving like as if using fb js a crime. M said, yeah he made me stand but i wasnt standing close to him, i was standing 5 meters away from him and every student of the class agreed this.M asked principle to change my section and principle agreed, I was transferred to A. Next day my CT told me that I m suspended for a week.My life became a joke. After some days my father went to school and met my CT and M and said wait what I'll do now. You can threaten my daughter in school now see how I'll spoil you life what makes you think to make my daughter stand in front of you on toes, M started saying sorry please forgive me he started begging my dad. M has a single son who was 4–5 years old and his wife died due to some tragedy, due to this reason my dad didn't take any action against him .After suspension, first day in new class,When I came, students of that class talked to me badly, there were 2 students whom I knew since 8th standard and they were the only one who talked to me. Teachers talked to me as if I am coming after killing someone. When I came back, this news of my suspension was spread like a fire. There were rumours about me. People said, I had sex with X, when I went to his house I actually had any sexual attempt with him and the list goes on.now, the biggest challenge for me was to excel in the SA1 exams. I was totally dependent on school for studies because that time I didn't go to any tutions and coaching centers. Syllabus was over in new section of most of the subjects and none of the teachers agreed to teach me. They said complete your notes read from that, its more than enough. I am a kind of student who learns everything and understand, I am not a kind of rattu totta. I had the challenge to excel in science especially, because there were going to come 10 chapters and I didn't new a single word in any one chapter, I started studying, self study. I got 64/90. My parents were happy with these marks(they knew if this wouldn't happened I would have scored 90/90) they encouraged me because I got much much much better than others. In short, there is no one to help you out except your parents, respect them.My life completely changed after that and I am not like that now.Thank you quoraEdit- I changed the school and my city as well. I am not in touch with anyone now. I have no friends now. I am a medical student now busy in my entrance exams, but now I feel everything happens for a good thing. Maybe, I wasn't preparing to be a doctor if all this didn't happen. I know this wasn't fare but maybe god wanted to teach me a lesson.
What is your review of University of California, Riverside?
UC Riverside is more than meets the eye, and I suppose from what you hear as well. I’m sure you’ve heard some gossip about UC Riverside from someone you know, or just maybe indirectly from some idle conversation. I’m here to tell you, there are some truths to the gossip, however, there is also much, MUCH more beneath the gossip.Originally, I bought into the bad gossip about UC Riverside. I convinced myself that I was “never” going to attend UC Riverside. My brother attended UCR, and was part of BCoE, Computer Science Department (Bourns College of Engineering), and he didn’t have anything positive to say about UCR, except that the students he knew, were exceptionally lazy. Naturally, that didn’t inspire confidence, along with the rest of the gossip like attending UCR is like being a UCReject.Competition is strong among many schools in attempting to place a strong bid for strong candidates to come and attend their institution. After all, that’s what schools really have to base on, in terms of offering admissions. Your life academic record, and extracurricular acumen and performance. Other than those official records, you get a chance to talk about yourself in about 2–3 pages via a personal statement. It all comes down to this… No school wants to have bad performing students. I’m sure you don’t like to be placed last on any list for something you’re passionate about. UC Riverside also doesn’t like being the “last choice” among students who don’t even really care about UCR. But nonetheless, is reality. UC Riverside does its best to seek potential and make do with what it’s got.For more about my personal thoughts about admission to UCR, you can read it here: What was it like to be accepted into UC Riverside?—- How is UC Riverside generally from my perspective (comprehensive)—-UC Riverside is hot. Do not underestimate the temperature while studying here. Also watch out for the “special” trees on campus. It is also noteworthy to mention that while it may seem very nice on campus, be extremely cautious when walking around. UC Riverside isn’t located in a “nice” area.—- The Commuter’s Struggle —UCR in my view is more of a commuter school, than a “live-on-campus” University. This is my subjective view, since as a commuter, I didn’t have the privilege of experiencing what it was like to live in a college dorm. I’m also going to say, that the campus wasn’t very commuter friendly. Almost all commuters only had one lot to park in, and that’s was a walk away from campus in the isolated lot of Lot 30. UCR isn’t commuter friendly, largely due to part that most campus organizations meet at night, and into the wee-hours. Also, there weren’t many places to go, sleep, take a nap, or kill time for commuters. We couldn’t like most on-campus students just pop back to their dorms or apartments during the off-hours. It is easy to say, “well why don’t you just do your homework, or brush up on your assignments/readings for your next class?” Trust me, I’ve done all of those things. I even did extra research, and then some where I delved deep into the library in search for material that may supplement my readings. But you also have to acknowledge, not everyone is an overachiever, or has equal care for their education. Which still brings back to my main point of those who many not have been as privileged as I was (almost a full-ride).Some commuter students don’t have the luxury or privilege to stay on campus that long, to be a part of a student organization largely catered towards students who live on campus. I remember having conflicts between chess club and mock trial, since they happened at the same time and date. I had to sacrifice one for the other, and even at that. Mock Trial began at 7pm and lasted until 10pm. When you have to be on campus at 7am in the morning for discussion sections, and have to commute an hour each way… (it can be done, I’ve done it), it’s just very burdensome on the commuter.—- The Nom’s —-Food options on campus are plenty. I used to frequent the Barn, and enjoy the friendly atmosphere there and good food made from scratch. As I ate there, I love to strike up a conversation with Heidi, one of the register workers, as well as with Chef Ernesto. Food options at the HUB are decent, I wouldn’t say stellar. The Coffee Bean and Ivan’s are the only two coffee options on campus. If you like strong coffee, look no further than Ivan’s, next to Hinderaker Hall. The Buffet at Aberdeen-Inverness for $10 was a steal! They basically had AYCE Beverage Fountain with just about every drink you can think of. The Buffet line offers simple “create your own” options. The Buffet is usually packed during peak hours, and UCR offers meal packages for incoming students living at the dorms. I never visited Lothian Dining Hall, so I’m not sure what they have there. If you happen to get classes at the UV (University Village), you’re right in food town. I remember they used to have a Fat Burger. But while you’re at the UV, you can explore all the options there like: Yoshinoya, Mongolian BBQ, Thai Food, Pizza, UC Bakery, even check out the Movie Theater and Sushiya. I know the Starbucks is a popular hangout spot for UCR students and faculty. However, one of the most popular hangout joints, is the Getaway Cafe, across the street from UCPD. They’ve got pool tables, and some arcade machines. They’ve got booze, and an assortment of food for college bound students. Heck, it’s a wonderful place to meet up.Lastly, if you’re down for a drive to Downtown Riverside. Hit up the Salted Pig. It’s a pretty popular local spot. I think you’ll like both the food, and the selection of craft beers that they have in stock.Bonus: if you ever are lucky enough to find UCR Orange Juice. Get it.—- The Academic Format from my perspective —-I majored in Political Science (“POSC”), Law and Society (“LWSO”) / (“PSLW” - Political Science, Law and Society combined). So that means I’m part of CHASS (College of Humanities and Social Sciences). As a political science major, I spent most of my classes/time (Upper Division) in Watkins Hall, Olmstead Hall, Bourns Lecture Halls, INTN/S and Sproul Hall. Most of your lower division classes will most likely take place in University Hall. In addition, my LWSO, will take place in Watkins, and the UV (University Village). Political science faculty offices are primarily located on the 2F of Watkins Hall. However, some Part-Time Lecturers, make the habit of having their office hours at Coffee Bean, or Starbucks in the UV. Most LWSO professors reside in HMNSS (Humanities and Social Sciences Building). At UCR, you have four distinctions of professors. You have:Reader/GraderTeachers Assistant (“TA”)Guest Lecturer/Lecturer (“Lecturer” unless specifically added “Guest”)Associate ProfessorDistinguished ProfessorThere are also three disctinctions of class settings:Discussion Section (“Section(s)”)LectureSeminarFrom my experience, Lectures were primarily taught by either a Lecturer or an Associate Professor. Only the most impacted of course listings are taught by Distinguished Professors. TA’s usually only taught the discussion sections, or in some cases in the absence of a Lecturer, the TA will be appointed and temporarily promoted to Guest Lecturer to teach that course (Lecture) with an appointed subordinate Reader/TA to support the Guest Lecturer. Most Lower Division courses are impacted. Impacted meaning, there are more students wanting to enroll that specific than space provides. My personal example, was LWSO100: Introduction to Law and Society. The course was packed with well over 200 students. Our Lecture was housed at the UV9 (University Village, Auditorium #9), and was taught by Distinguished Professor of Law Dr. Carl Cranor. Dr. Cranor was assisted by 4 TA’s, throughout 6 Discussion Sections, that spanned throughout the week. We were required to attend the hour long lecture, which took up two days of the week. Then attend Section for supplementary instruction in addition to the Lecture material. If you’re someone who needs more 1-on-1 instruction in these impacted courses, you need to really step up, and flag down the TA’s for help. For a class of 200+, chances are, you’ll be lost among the tide of students. Be diligent, and be courteous. Remember TAs and professors have other courses to teach in addition to their own Doctoral or Masters studies, which can amount up to more than 500+ students. Forgive them, if they don’t remember you.Electives are more relaxed, compared to impacted courses. Often electives are more memorable than Lectures spanning up to 200+ students. In Electives, classes are typically smaller anywhere between 30 - 60 seats capped. These courses are usually taught by Lecturers (and Guests) and Associate Professors. It is rare for these courses to have a Section. Most electives are shouldered by the Teacher alone, sometimes they ask a TA to become a Reader/Grader for them to assist in grading papers. Most Lecturers (and Guests), are part-time faculty, and have to travel from campus to campus to teach their classes. Their office hours are more ad hoc.—- The Final Word on Professors —-I’ve always been a strong supporter and advocate for part-time faculty. In my view, they are some of the hardest working, most innovative, and dedicated self-sacrificing individuals I know. I’ve come to befriend many of them during, and after my Undergraduate career. These are the professors that really strive to take the time to get to know you, and they’re really busting themselves out there rooting for your success. But don’t be too hard on them when it comes to evals. Be truthful, and rise to the challenge. These hard working individuals are placed in the middle of rock and a hard spot. They want to make it challenging for you, but they also need to be evaluated well in order to even be considered for re-hire next term. Don’t evaluate them badly, just because you couldn’t hack it.TA’s are always a mixed bunch. Some are extremely sociable. Some are just there and want to focus on their doctorate, and dissertation. But for those TAs who you meet, try and get to know them. They’re people too. They could use some Undergrads to bother them, and remind them that there is still a world out there aside from all the serious stuff. Oh yeah, if you happen to get a TA as a Lecturer, help them out with some new ideas. You’ll be surprised that TAs are more likely to help you out, and get into a debate/discussion with you on topics.Associate and Distinguished Professors are the main stream faculty. They’ve most likely been tenured. They are also a mixed bunch. Not naming people, but Associate Professors and up, sometimes can be seen as either “prideful” or simply outright just too occupied in their minds to have even noticed you. At the UC’s there is a real expectation for even tenured professors to produce published works, or their tenure may be re-evaluated. Most of them are focused on their research, and only seeing having to teach courses as part of the deal for their research grants. This isn’t always the case, but especially in my experience, it sure felt like it.—- Social Justice and Politics —-This was something I didn’t really want to touch. But it is undeniably visible at UCR, and I think has gotten significantly worse since my graduation. When I was there, there was already significant bias politically. In just about every student office/branch, it was exclusive to those who were “in the know” some sort of “party” affiliation. The first two parties you’ll find (even though they’ve changed their names continuously over the years), will be predominately the Progressive Socialists, and the Conservative Libertarians. You can do you own research and look up on news media, and even from 1st hand student videos about issues regarding this political divide on campus. I was even on the Committee for Election Fraud when I was there. Yes, there were issues of ELECTION FRAUD for political office in the Associated Students of UC Riverside government. Just to be in context, these political offices are no joke. They take it seriously. You might think it is silly, but to them it is real politics. I didn’t know how serious it was while I was in college politics at the community college. But these people mean business, and they’re serious.I don’t know what else to say, but I’m sure this is like any other campus in regards to politics and social justice issues.—- Final Word on UCR —-I’m sure that I have gone on a long rant about some of the experiences I had at UCR. I’m sure there are also a few of you thinking “how dumb for him to be wasting time talking about something that may be so trivial”.Look, UCR isn’t perfect, and I’m not either. But, I loved my time at UCR. If we met person to person, I’m sure I’d talk until the sun went down about how great of a time that I had at UCR. Heck, I’d even tell you, that I wish I had more time to spend at UCR (not the tuition of course). However, the time I have spent at the community college, then at UCR all made me into who I am today.I hope to have imparted some of my very personable experiences at a place that I hold very dear. As I’ve mentioned, these are just some of the things that happened to make it onto text box, as I can talk more specific details in person. But hey, if you really want to know more about the details, shoot me a comment below. I’ll be more than happy to tell you more about UC Riverside!
How do I study with focus and concentration and avoid distractions and procrastination?
Review your activities during a week and determine what time on each day will have the highest likelihood for least distractions. Build a study schedule around it.Consider your energy levels during different scheduled sessions in planning the topics. The more productive time slots should be aligned to the tougher topics.Determine a place for studying and ensure it’s free of distractions, like TV, video games, family conversations, etc.Break your goals for a week into goals for each study session. Be realistic with how much you can achieve with each session. While in the middle of the session, measure your progress. Don’t give up if you aren’t doing well, but try to course correct. Measure against the session goal as well as week’s goal at the end of the session.Include variety of topics in each session. Start a new session with something you love the most (let’s say science), and once you have concentration, switch to something you don’t quite like that much (say History).Pause every few minutes to summarize what you have learnt—try to put the learning in your words.Take frequent breaks—like every 30 minutes. Do something normal during the breaks: walk, eat, talk to someone in your family, etc.Timebox your worry for a later time. If you have worrying thoughts, note them down and set aside some time to think about those. Tell yourself to not worry outside the time that you’ve set aside.Make flash cards of the key concepts. Write the name of the concept on one side and the details on the other side. Use these cards to remember and revise stuff when you are doing something else but find a minute or two.Leave your phone in the other room. The world is not going to miss you as much as you may think they will.
