It's been many years since a car came to me for a speedometer repair and I had to replace a cable. Since then, most all speedometer and odometer are electronically driven and operated.So for the most part, if the transmission is turning with the ignition on, it will wrack up the miles. But most often, people pull vehicles that have a transfer case that can be shifted into neutral. So long as the transmission output shaft in most cars or even the differential in some cars, is not turning, or the ignition is off, it will keep the same mileage.

For much the same reason the US Navy hasn’t developed and deployed a new trireme: they were obsolete.The war chariot was the earliest military use of horses. Bronze Age armies used chariots to move swiftly around the battlefield. Why chariots? Because horses weren’t good enough. Early domesticated horses were relatively small, not suitable for carrying armored riders around. To make use of them, armies had to use teams of horses to pull vehicles. Over many centuries, selective breeding eventually produced horses large enough to serve as viable mounts. Horses were more maneuverable than chariots because they weren’t limited to operating on hard, level ground the way wheeled vehicles were, and they didn’t require the heavy, sometimes fragile equipment of the chariot. Once cavalry became an option, you just had to put guys on individual horses. Chariots were abandoned in favor of just riding horses across the Old World, from Europe to China. Taking perfectly good cavalry horses, teaming them together, and attaching them to a slower, more cumbersome vehicle would have been a step backwards.

My favorite is the Ford GAA engine.The GAA was an aluminum block gasoline V8 with a flat plane crank and dual overhead cams in 1940. It made 500 horsepower and over 1,000 foot pounds of torque. Those figures sound impossible for the time, until you realize this thing had an absolutely massive displacement of 1,100 cubic inches / 18 liters. Bore and stroke was 5.4 and 6.0 inches.The engine was originally designed to be an aviation V12 to compete with the Rolls Royce Merlin engine found in the P51 Mustang but it never went into production. With WW2 engagement looming this engine found its niche as a shortened V8 version to be installed in Sherman tanks. It retained its 60° bank angle, which is what prompted the use of a flat plane crankshaft.Having been designed for flight, the engine was lightweight, powerful, and reliable. It had two carburetors, two distributors, and shaft driven cams. There were no chains or belts whatsoever to slip or stretch; even the fans and fluid pumps were all gear and shaft driven.The GAA and its variations proved to be excellent power units in over 28,000 military vehicles, and surviving examples have surfaced here and there in extreme muscle car and truck projects as well as tractor pull vehicles. Its 7.5:1 compression ratio - originally intended merely to cope with the poor octane fuel of the time - coupled with a closed-deck block makes this engine a good candidate for forced induction. Turbocharged builds producing astronomical horsepower and torque figures are known to exist. I’ve seen claims of 4,000HP/6,000ft-lbs. Despite its massive volume the engine weighs just over a thousand pounds ready-to-run, the same as a typical diesel pickup engine, so swapping it into street vehicles is a real possibility.
