How was your SBI PO interview experience?

My interview was scheduled on 24-SEP-18 at SBLC Kolkata. I was put in Panel 2 i.e. from 10.30 AM. I was the last candidate in my panel and the wait outside the interview room was quite exhausting… at least mentally. Each interview was taking 15 minutes on an average and I used this opportunity to visit the washroom, drink water and stroll a bit just to take my mind off the upcoming ordeal. Finally, my turn came, but it wasn’t completely smooth. A beeper outside the room was used to call in the next candidate. The beeper rang. I took a deep breath, knocked on the door, opened it slightly and asked for permission to come in. Out of the blue, the HR manager came up from behind me, pushed me aside and went in. I was left standing there, awkwardly holding the door unsure whether to enter or close the door again. I kept thinking in my mind ‘bad start, bad start…’. Luckily the interviewers too were unpleased with this intrusion and asked the manager to come back later. I then entered, but in all this confusion, forgot to wish the lady in the room first! Argh, my manners! So, after greeting everyone I sat on the lone chair in front of the interviewers. I do not remember clearly if I asked for permission to sit, though. These are small things you rehearse over and over in your mind outside the room, but once inside, it is all auto pilot. I gradually took in the surroundings and the people inside while the interviewers went through my bio-data form. There were 5 interviewers – 2 gentlemen on my left, 1 directly in front of me, and a lady and gentleman to my right. They were all seated in sofas in a semi-circle while I was somewhere at the centre of it.The interviewer (I1) in front started off with “So, Sourav… you have done engineering from NIT Durgapur. Which stream was it?”Me: Sir, it was Information Technology.I1: You graduated in 2015. What were you doing all this while then? *I had already mentioned my work experience in my biodata, still he asked me this.Me: Sir, I am currently working in IBM. I got the job in my campus placements.I1 (smiling): Ah, you work in IBM. That is a tech giant. And you are from an IT background. So, why do you want to join the banking industry?*I was expecting this question. I had rehearsed the answer a million times but, as I wrote earlier, it all goes out the window the moment you step inside the room.Me: Banking industry is secure and provides good remuneration for hard work.I1: You think that banking is a secure industry. So, can I infer from that statement that you are a laidback sort of a person?Me: *confused whether it is a welcome thing or not, maintains silence*I1: Do you not like challenges in life? IT industry is full of opportunities. Don’t you want to be a part of this digital revolution that this world is going through?*I cited an example from work where a senior resource I looked up to was sacked because ‘he was too senior for the work’. I told I1 that it got me a little scared to be honest.I1: So, suppose you join the bank and a senior manager you look up to is sacked on charges of corruption. Would you again be demoralized and look for opportunities elsewhere?Me: If a person is caught in a corruption charge, he should ideally be sent to jail, not just sacked. Moreover, why would I look up to a corrupt person for inspiration?*I1 realised it was a foolish analogy that he threw at me and I hit it for a six. So, he moved on to other topics. Have you heard of Watson? What is it? Tell me 5 hottest IT technologies that are ruling the market now, etc. Then he passes the baton to the interviewers on my left.I2: Coming from an IT background can you tell me somethings where improvements can be made?I pointed out use of virtual keyboards for online banking and HTTPS, etc. I don’t recall my exact answer, but I wasn’t too happy with the answer myself.I3: Since you are a person who does not like challenges in life, how will you cope with the challenges in banking? *he asked this in the most matter-of-fact way, as if it was an established fact that I was lazy.Me: *Mentally shaking my head* Sir, with all due respect, I would like to differ with you. I am a person who likes challenges and I have a firm belief that I can do quite well in banking. With my professional experience of 3 years, I know the importance of targets and deadlines. Moreover, unlike most people I do not fear rural postings. On the contrary, I think people in rural areas have the most respect for bankers.I1 now asked the lady and gentlemen on my right if they had any questions to which they said no.So, I1 again: Ok. Now tell me 5 things about the Indian economy that you would like to change.*This was the only economy/banking related question in the whole interview and it was nothing like I had ever expectedMe: *After thinking for some time* Can I change anything?I1: Yes. Yes. Suppose the whole economy is left to you. What would you change?Me: I would stop all subsidies as they…I1: Okay, that’s 1. Next? *he was not looking for explanations, as he could see through my train of thoughtMe: I would stop all loan waivers.I1: Okay 2. Although, a loan waiver is practically a sort of subsidy itself. Still, 2 points. Next?*I had run out of ideas. I scratched my head (hopefully figuratively) and had a divine intervention.Me: I would like to introduce Capital Account Convertibility. *I had discussed the pros and cons of this just the previous night with my girlfriend. *I1: Ah! *Clearly impressed as he was not expecting this from someone with IT background.*He then let me off the last 2 points as I was taking too long a time to come up with anything else. Finally, he ended the interview with questions about my hobbies which seemed like a solemn end to a very rigorous exercise, much like a cool breeze after a storm.I stood up and wished everyone. Once more, I did not wish the lady first. But this time, I did not feel miserable about it. Forget chivalry, to me it made more sense to first wish the person who spoke to me for nearly 10 minutes of the 15-minute interview. I wished I1, then the lady and then the rest of the interviewers. Then I slowly walked out of the room.29-OCT-18 was the final result and I made it. I got 25/30 in the interview. In hindsight, had I not dropped the S-word, I could probably have scored more. But then that’s what hindsight is!A few lessons learnt that day:Keep calm. The interviewers want to see how handle pressure and awkward situations. No matter how much you plan, interview will always throw you a googly.Have confidence in yourself, no matter what happens. If something is wrong, don’t be afraid to point it out.Never tell your would-be employer that you are there for a secure job. Never.

How is life at the BNP Paribas India Solutions, Goregaon?

All these positive answers about BNP being an awesome place to work is total BS. I had started as a fresher at the place and it left me totally frustrated and at the end I felt like a legacy application myself, too outdated for the real world out there. In the world where Java 9, 10 were released my application didn't even have 8. While other companies are already done with technologies, they introduce it as if it is the latest trend. It is basically the North Korea of Investment banks. The employees think they work on the latest tech. I agree that it highly depends on which team you end up in, but it is due to the fact that they have amazing foreign counterparts. I joined in with a group of freshers and let me tell you the only people who were/are happy at the place are people who don't want to work or simply don't care about their careers. There is no concept of fast track promotion in the company so even if a junior developer does a senior level job u get paid shit and still have to suck up for 4–5 years because they won't promote u to a senior till then. While your peers in similar banks get 20–30% hikes easily doing similar or even better quality of work, enjoy feeling like trash when they boast it on your face.People are too happy and rested in the place. They are not ready to leave because they know they have no place elsewhere as the company pays well for guys who can't do simple things as writing an email without grammatical errors and I should not speak about their amazing development skills. I've seen a senior who took a month to write a simple multithreaded code in Java because the manager had no clue about technology. The dev got a promotion in the same year. Tech leads don't even know how their own applications work. They are more than happy to extend class implementations by their foreign counterparts. If you are reading this try asking if leads/managers why u use the technology u r using or make them explain constructs inside the framework. Understand what work you are doing, keep pestering them, ask why every now and then. Go with a new technology and propose a solution see the reaction.People who work hard are appreciated by the wrong kind of paper the so-called “Bravo” award. This is a diplomatic and political facade as it is given to teams which makes money. You have no appreciation when u do something amazing but ur app doesn't make money. Not in your hands. It is given because they fear the one talented bright mind leaving the company before he/she realizes they are in the wrong place. Talented people are poorly paid while people who sit on their asses all day, take 1 hr lunch break, 1hr walks with the opposite sex which gets discussed by the other lot for more time than necessary and of course being judged by looks and clothes. People are literally jobless and small. There are managers without a team, senior developers who can't write a simple piece of code. I should not talk about the laughable QA teams, incompetence is just floating around. They are mostly contractors so it is understandable if they couldn't care to work. They rarely get penalized as the blame is all on the developers. Technical Support teams are good most of the times (don't get happy read ahead) and some good employees end up overworking to meet others incompetences. Though notably there are some there who have time for having lunch, walks with chicks but no time when it comes to a deployment. A bloody useless process is more important than fixing a critical bug. But if a girl walks upto them, they may do it without any of it. Functional support is the open laughing stock among all the departments. They are highly paid Customer support who gossip about others all day, when a person can't code/script they get thrown into it with dreams of becoming a BA which they never do atleast in BNP. They are full of girls who love gossip and shop online on Amazon, Myntra and discussing at length their stupid escapades and bfs/husband's in the pantry room. Please somebody give those people to do. Managers there do nothing but delegate it to a few employees who actually work. Others roam around with their boy toys or girl toys. Got news that their delivery manager who liked playing with cards, origami and showing magic tricks like a clown has left/fired. The goal of every office member is to check time to see 6 o'clock and start packing their bags from 5.30pm while drinking more caffeine than they should as it's free. Avg employee barely works for 2–3 hrs a day removing breakfast, lunch, walks, chai, sutta and coffee breaks.I saw people lying their teeth out about onsite. If you are lucky and lick boots well maybe just maybe they might let u go for a week or two duh. The CIB of TMRW and knewtion is a joke by higher management to get promotions. All those who started it have left the firm or got transferred to higher positions across the globe. Under no circumstances work in Global markets. GMIT is a hell hole after a new HOD has taken the helm. No one including the delivery managers are happy around him and put a fake smile to be on his good side. Outside the company everyone questions his tactics. Indeed Indians are their worst enemies. People literally piss their pants when he walks around. Don't fall prey to his smile. Delivery managers may pretend to help you out but no one dares walk up to him. He has slashed all budgets out there, on sites from GMIT will get u the shittiest accommodation under his supervision. He is so jobless that he approves new headphone requests (yeah judge him).Bonuses are shitty AF. I barely got a hike more than 8% which is awesome for people from the service company, where a max of the BNP lovers come from. Freshers out there, if you want to make a mark in tech this is not the company for you. People who talk abt work-life balance are people who desire to be at home with their wives all day or shop after office to a party every evening. HR is a joke, they have no power over managers. There is no feedback system for grievances and even when it is raised they don't give a fuck. The exit interview is a joke. I've known of instances where severe complaints had been raised by an ex-employee while exiting but the manager got a promotion in the same year without a single check given. This is a company full of sycophants where hard work doesn't pay.Yes, there are some good managers out there. They are powerless and will indirectly tell u the truth so pack ur bags as soon as possible. BNP is a great stepping stone to get a better company. Just don't get comfortable or fall in love with the place. It is a black hole the more u stay the more irrelevant u become. This is indeed a service company with the facade of a product company. The company was on a good track atleast opportunity wise till the French managers were incharge but got badly screwed by Indians who replaced them. The problem is tech divisions being lead by managers who have no clue about technology. Some may have been devs in the distant past but now know nothing but office politics. Also, these assholes won't let u leave. They will make u serve a notice of 3 months where u won't do anything but get frustrated by bureaucracy. They won't leave u as they will hold a grudge. Imagine doing 3 months of nothing and unable to leave in spite of an offer from a dream company because of this. No, they won't allow buyouts. If u get an offer from BNP learn as much as you can and get out. Also, if you are looking for a new job using naukri block BNP as HR tracks your account and it may unnecessarily hamper whatever appraisal you get. Don't give them a reason to underpay u any further. So here is my anecdote on this place which too many love as seen by me in the answers before this. Clearly, they are deluded or are the sycophants I mentioned earlier. This place is no less than the retarded Big Boss house which the idiot employees love to discuss at length. The company has to cleanse and weed such people out. Employees love the place for their own incompetence and not the work because work is a joke (At least for more of the teams). They will lie about working on AI and big data but trust me they will be patch up jobs at max, as they are skilled only for that. Great place for good looking girls as there are too many behind the scene cheap lovers there to stalk u, ur profiles and get your work done for u. They will know more about u than u know. They will have nicknames for u. Your biodata, images and even itty-bitty-gritty details of life are on the BNP blockchain, an open public ledger and immutable (hope u got the sarcasm folks). Please don’t share details of your personal/sex life with anybody in the company because believe it or not everybody knows about it. For the genuine tech guys/gals out there I implore u to not fall trap and think higher and better.Yes if you are lucky, u will learn some new things in BNP and your experience may not exactly mirror mine. Even I had some notable good times too handful of professional ones though. I have joined another firm and learning things which wud have been impossible under that banner. To existing good and hardworking employees hope you find what you are looking for ELSEWHERE. I know some trying real hard to come out of the blackhole, I wish them all the best.May the force be with you!!!NOTE: It has come to my attention that this post is creating negativity, and some unnecessary traction, it isnt my intention, I have just shared my experience. If people have good experiences then great! good for you. This is not a personal attack of anykind on anyone, professional definitely. I had been there for little more than a year and I know the wrong culture that was circulating there. Fix it.P.S. dear loyal employees (Senior Managers) trying to defend this company, I feel it's no use as people already know what I have written is the true picture and and a sad truth. Like I have mentioned there are definitely some really good managers in the company who run some good projects (needles in a haystack of shit) but the onshore sites are excellent no doubt about it. About psych tests, I would love that to be implemented, like I mentioned idiots and useless will be weeded out making the company a much better place to stay. In a senior position, sitting behind a desk and reading falsified reports as I have seen it being done myself, you don't have visibility of real shit happening at the associate levels, I guess u r living in a matrix like world. If it was a lie no one would have read or simply ignored the post which I wish would have been true. So instead of your wasting time calling the sane mentally retarded go have more one on one meetings with employees without knowledge of managers, build great projects, create a holistic workplace for talent where such attrition (I've heard it's worsened) in the company is curbed and good employees moving either to JP or Morgan Stanley is stopped. prove me wrong.
