Please don’t keep money (or annual salary as a motivation). Criminal profilers, what the FBI labels criminal investigative analysts (the FBI authored Crime Classification Manual refers to “investigative profiling”), generally are not directly involved in collection of evidence, arrests, or interviews. Some Forensic Psychologists conduct criminal profiling, as do some criminologists. Some private profilers are more about marketing and public relations than scientific analysis.And, there is little resemblance between TV and movie fiction and reality.Criminal profilers compile all reported information (witness statements, pathologist reports, forensic analysis reports, crime scene photos and diagrams, etc.) from all aspects of an investigation collected and/or prepared by others, then they attempt to compare what is known with common criminal behavior and evidence of behavior that varies from the norm.Criminal profiling analyzes crimes after they occur, attempts to link crimes of serial offenders, attempts to identify unexplored investigative leads, provides inferences of offender characteristics from behavioral evidence analysis (deductive and inductive inferences) and/or attempts to statistically associate common traits of offenders who commit specific crimes in specific ways (inductive inferences). There may also be some attempt to predict future crimes, based on a recognizable cycle and/or victimology.Victimology, as it applies to criminal profiling, involves an analysis of the traits of the victim, to include demographics, time, place, behaviors, common activities, etc., that may be consistent in some regard across a series of crimes by the same perpetrator, or may provide leads on how the perpetrator came into contact with the victim.Criminal profiling varies from psychological profiling, which is focused on psychological traits of the perpetrator.Agents assigned to the FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) are special agents with the same authorities of any other special agent (fbi.gov). There are many more applicants for FBI positions than there are positions, and there are many more FBI agents who would like to a member of the BAU than will ever achieve that goal.The FBI's National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime (NCAVC) consists of four sections: BAU-1, Threat Assessment (Counterterrorism); BAU-2, Crimes Against Adults; BAU-3, Crimes Against Children; and, the Violent Criminal Apprehension Program (ViCAP). The BAU requires two years of training prior to certification as an investigative profiler. The BAU dealing with adult criminals consists of eight (8) profilers (personal communication with the BAU-2 supervisor, March 2010).Forensic psychology, Bachelor and Masters, would probably be beneficial for BAU preparation. A PhD would be better preparation, but requires considerable time and effort. However, an in-depth knowledge of physical evidence is also necessary, and a degree in forensic sciences may also be good preparation. Investigative psychology, as taught in the UK, may also be good (look up professors Canter and Alison). Had two fellow agents not sought him out in his hotel room, reportedly kicking in the door, one could assume a bad outcome that was narrowly avoided. I act as a postdoc researcher, so my opinion will be regarded to the "research" duty of the University. I never studied in a Chinese university in my life, but my experience here can help you to imagine how they are .My research is related to use deep learning technology (a kind of computer processing technique that simulates our brain understanding on data) focused on performing forensic investigation of documents. China is very interested on developing solutions on this as piracy is a serious problem here (as you might know).So, detecting forgeries in digital images with deep learning means that I need extremely high computational resources to analyze thousands or millions of images. Normally, we must use GPUs to make our experiments run faster. The more, the merrier.The "basic" configuration I have in my lab so far is: a CPU cluster with 22 nodes and one machine with 15 GPUs, and they will double this till the end of this year. They took only two months to build an extremely powerful data center in the first floor of our college. They are also building an extremely huge library close to my lab.I am older than the university I work. So, things happen faster here.Another interesting thing I have never seen in my academic life happens here: they give you money as award for scientific publications, and it is a lot of money (for Chinese standards). Of course, it depends on the journal quality index. So, everybody is focusing in doing the best research here.
