What are the definitive signs of spring where you live?

MarchDon’t kid yourself. It’s still winter.Birds. SO. MANY. BIRDS.AprilWild card. Either still winter or a “Fool’s Spring” practice run.You might see the pot-bellied, shirtless, grill-master dads start to come out of hibernation.Trees and flowers start budding.MayCross your fingers that we don’t get one final surprise sprinkle of snow.Flowers in full bloom. Along with the rancid, nostril-burning smell of fresh mulch. Or is that horse manure? The first 65 to 70 degree day…come mid May. That’s the real start of our spring. Two weeks later, it’ll probably be in the 90s.

A tree on my property fell onto a neighbor's fence and he wants me to pay for it. The law says a fallen tree on his property is his problem to deal with. What should I do?

So… this actually happened to me in reverse. My neighbor’s tree fell on my house and luckily only ripped off my brand new seamless gutter that wasn’t even a month old. It was within inches of our bedroom window (my husband and I were out in the middle of the storm with saws cutting branches to avoid it shifting through and doing more damage). That’s when you learn an awful lot about your insurance. The portion of the tree that fell on my property and my damages weren’t covered by her insurance. Her insurance would only cover the portion of the tree that fell on her property, but did not include stump removal which she wasn’t happy about. The only exception would have been if negligence was involved. We would have needed t prove that the tree was dead or in poor health prior to it falling which wasn’t the case here.We live in a small community and everyone tries to be a good neighbor. A nice gentleman down the street came down with a chainsaw and cut up the tree and took the larger sections to season for firewood. I took an emergency vacation day and used our chipper/shredder to mulch the remainder… she didn’t have to claim against her insurance for the tree removal on her side. Our damage was under our deductible since we also didn’t have to pay anyone else to remove the tree. We only had to replace our gutter. She paid us the amount it cost us for the gutter (I believe it was just over $300).While legally you may not be responsible for the damage your tree did to your neighbor’s property, morally it’s the right thing to do to help your neighbor out and offer to at least pay his insurance deductible.

What would you do to make your funeral unique?

My Funeral will proceed as follows. First and foremost all Funeral participants will be clad in supreme short sleeve Hawaiian button downs or clothes of that nature. Second I will not be cooked to ashes nor preserved in a lame uncomfortable box. I will simply have my body placed in a hole in the ground. The hole will be filled with dirt and mulch and then atop my place of rest I will have my favorite tree planted (probably a Chinese maple). The idea that my body feeds the growth of this young tree and life goes on appeals to me. It is my hope that other people will follow this funeral style and the place of my burial turns into a majestic forest filled with a diverse hodgepodge of trees with awesome pathways for my grandchildren to come visit my tree and reflect on life and such. As for the funeral, I hope to be there in treespirit form and listen to people talk about how awesome I was.
