And at one point, she was ranked #1 in the world.First, let me say that I would have never “taken” a point off of her. Ever. Ever. Ever. Of course if we played enough games, she would “give” me a point every now and then due to an unforced error. Being superb doesn’t make one perfect.It was absolutely awesome to be on the same court with her, but I could return strokes with her. I could rally a few times before she would set me up and finish me off.But, she didn’t compare to the men’s games I’d witnessed, and she’d have had no answer for an Andy Roddick serve.PLAYING WITH THE #55 MANI also had the privilege of two week-long tennis camps in which the instructor was once ranked #55 in the world. He was one of those “journeyman” players. He had no chance of ever getting much past the first round or two of a Grand Slam. He was, in his words, “the cannon fodder” for the big boys to warm up on, as they advanced to the quarters and semis. He’d had the privilege of losing to the biggest names in tennis in his era: Connors, McEnroe, Bjorg, et al.Another answer mentions that match Serena played against the #203 male player, which he won in an easy 6–1, 6–2. I played #55, admittedly, of course, long after he was #55. But still, it was frightening to be on the receiving end of his serves. And he hit regular shots with a power and precision that didn’t seem possible.I’d seen that male power and precision on TV and in the stands at matches with the #1 man in the world. But watching it, even in the stands, didn’t compare to being blasted off the court by a former #55. I might as well have been in the stands!!POWER ANALYSISStories are fun, but I will wrap up with one hard number.Serena’s fastest serve ever was 124mph. Roddick’s fastest ever was 154mph. Doesn’t see all that much faster, right? Just 24% faster. Not huge, right?Wrong! The real story is in the power behind those speeds. As an old pilot with an aero degree, I know that the relationship of speed to power when moving objects through the air goes by the cube of the numbers.So, when you cube those two speeds, you find that Roddick generated 90% more power compared to Serena’s best serve—approaching double.THE COMPARISONSo, I’ve personally played on a court with a former #55 man and with a former #1 woman, and there is no comparison.The top pro men and women are playing different games.
