Had programming experience since 16; finished my MCSD and MCSE when 19; and currently have around 60 certifications around: Microsoft (programming + networking + databases + Microsoft Azure), Red Hat, Amazon Web Services, ITIL and currently in Oracle. The crux lies in the fact that - to employers - a certification only makes sense if you’ve some concrete hands-on experience - i.e. assuming you have 6+ years OR 10+ years of experience and possess excellent Market Credibility, Strength of Character and Customer / Senior CXO reference. Now, all this is pretty tough for a newbie to have.Secondly, there exists a country called ‘India’ which has destroyed the essence of “Industry level IT certifications”. Every Tom, Dick and Harry; when there’s a wave; e.g. we had the Microsoft wave, then Oracle wave. then Cisco wave, then came Red Hat wave; then came AWS wave… everyone goes and first gets a certification and then starts looking for a job. What this does is - completely destroys the credibility of the certification itself, the person himself/herself and then finally his/her career.I have been working with Microsoft Cloud technologies since launch of Windows Azure PaaS, then Windows Azure IaaS which got renamed into Microsoft Azure; and AWS since its early inception days in 2009; and now birth of Oracle Cloud; personally my observation is:There’s nothing wrong with AWS. It is a fantastic platform. Much in demand and lots of fantastic opportunities as well.Issue lies in the fact that most employers know that one can find multiple Test Centers in Bangalore, Chennai and other locations in South India wherein one can pay Rs. 10,000/- extra to the exam fees and pass these exams - and in some cases, I found out - the candidate does not need to visit the exam centre as well. This is rampant with n number of my acquaintances who have cleared dozens of Microsoft, AWS, Oracle, IBM, Cisco and VMware exams. The issue they face is - “In the interviews, they cannot answer simple questions; and get ditched”.I have personally worked for top-tier 3 AWS Global Integrators - 2 in India, and 1 in US; wherein I have met and interviewed folks who had 6 AWS certifications - but couldn’t answer very simple questions like -How can you enable EBS block-level encryption?How can one perform object-level indexation in S3 buckets?Explain 4 differences between ELB and application level LB?Explain how auto-scaling works and why do you need “pre-warm up of the ELB in certain cases?” etc.Needless to say, a person who cannot answer 8 questions out of 10; is worthless for an organization as an AWS Solution Architect, DevOps or SysOps resource. In fact, multiple AWS SIs black-list such candidates.And here I wish to mention something. During my career, I have met 3 AWS (or rather Cloud Technology Architects) - all three in India - one in Chennai, one in Pune, and one in Bangalore - all three are CTOs of top3 AWS Premier Consulting Partners and AWS Advanced Consulting Partners; and possess amazingly phenomenal AWS and in general Cloud Technology skills. Needless to say, all 3 of these individuals work on the most complex of large, multi-million USD opportunities in the US; one is a Tamil guy, the second is a Bangalorean guy, and then third is a guy from Pune. What is the common thread? None of these three have a single AWS Certification. Yes. As it so happens - I have worked with all 3 of these and was extremely impressed with their deep technical understanding and skills; and hence -they have not mugged up questions and answers.they have not studied dumps.they have not paid money to others to sit for their exams.they have not a Single AWS Certification. Yet, they are CTOs of the top 3 AWS Consulting Partners in India / US.The fundamental reason is -Focus on working on small projects.Focus on building knowledge and strength.Focus on building industry level networking with Born-in-Cloud (BIC) partners.Focus on securing a small project / internship with an organization and then scale from there.Rather - saying “I do not have any certification because I sincerely believe the word “certification” means when it is used for certifying the knowledge of an expert” rather than for having it for the sake of having it” is BETTER than saying “I have 5 AWS Certifications; can you hire me?”.Personally, I have met and interviewed more than 1,000+ folks across Microsoft Azure, AWS and Oracle Cloud since 2013 Jan; and the moment a person says - “I am certified on XYZ” practically signifies nothing; because in 99% of the 100% of the cases; folks fail to answer even the simplest of things.
