For a short while, I was happier than I had ever been in my entire life.After two months she abruptly broke off the relationship under some vague pretext. I was devastated, really disappointed. Three weeks later she told me, crying and furious, that she was pregnant. She wanted an abortion, and I agreed to pay cash for it. I paid it and everything went smoothly (from a medical standpoint).After that, she tried to pretend that nothing happened. We continued to work together, and she wanted to do the “just friends” bit. I refused. She grew more and more frustrated that she couldn’t get me to do whatever she wanted. After a few months, she began intriguing with the management, and I noticed that the boss and the project manager were getting frostier and frostier. I didn’t ask her if she had told them anything. She had been severely ashamed of the abortion, so I have to assume (pure conjecture, granted), that she had been making various unflattering comments about me, perhaps telling them that I thought ill of them, or that I had tried to hit on her, etc.Well, one day they all ganged up on me and said that my work was terrible, that I had better shape up PDQ, etc. They even accused me of behaving aggressively and uncooperatively—a purer case of Freudian projection there never was, because it was I who had been on the receiving end of markedly increasing hostility. I immediately recognized that this little summit was merely a pretext in order to lay a litigation-proof foundation for a termination with cause. I quit immediately, and moved to a different city after about six weeks.Now, to answer the question: for months afterwards, I contemplated ruining this woman’s life. I had retained a nice, clean photocopy of the abortion receipt—featuring her name, all of the unpleasant details, the cash paid (by me), the clinic’s file stamp, etc. Impossible to deny. I thought of mailing a copy of it to the company so that everyone would see it. Or of sending her a copy, without comment, just to scare the hell out of her. Or to her parents, both of whom knew me, but not of the affair—she had been desperate to keep the whole business secret from them as well.Certainly, I had been treated badly. But from a moral perspective, absolutely nothing could justify ruining her life. She and the company are located in a small city, and this woman has noplace else to go: she is not wealthy, and her family and friends are all there. It would have been pure, naked revenge on my part, strictly to inflict pain—I wouldn’t even stand to benefit.I never did it. Nor did I contact any of them in any way. I’m glad I restrained myself…I still fantasize about avenging myself, but I will never do it.
