The well-established firm, operating since 2009, had duped 1.04 lakh people out of nearly Rs 70 crore by promising fake jobs in India and abroad. In September 2018, seven people were held in Delhi for defrauding 20 jobless youth of Rs 2 crore, by collecting Rs 2 lakh each in lieu of fake jobs in the ONGC.These cases are the tip of the iceberg in a country that has seen unemployment spiral in the past few years. According to the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy, India’s unemployment rate in April 2019 shot up to 7.6%, the highest since October 2016. Combined with easy accessibility of the Internet, this has come as a boon for job scammers, who are offering non-existent jobs to desperate youth. “Students fresh out of college, from one of the thousands of engineering colleges in small towns, are easily trapped. Their parents have invested Rs 4-5 lakh and now want the kids to earn big money. Foreign jobs, especially in the Gulf, are coveted,” says Bilal Hasan, Head of Sales, Quetzal & Head Honchos.Little wonder then that embassies, companies and job portals have started putting up advisories on their websites to warn the applicants. On 28 April, the Indian embassy in Qatar tweeted: ‘Please do not trust any recruiting agent who promises you a job in Qatar on a business/visit visa. Always ask for a copy of the agent’s Qatar ID.’ Groups such as Tata Consultancy Services, Shell and Monster Jobs - Job Search, Career Advice & Hiring Resources have also put up warnings on their sites. They then send mass mailers and, even if they dupe 5% of job-seekers, they make a lot of money. The mails typically ask for a security deposit, interview fee or other charges, a prerequisite for scheduling an interview. While some fraudsters disappear as soon as they get the money, others go so far as to conduct a quick online or telephonic interview before allotting a fake appointment letter.Fake websites: Duplicate websites of reputed companies, job portals or government departments are created to mislead applicants. “They then post fake jobs, conduct tests and upload results, before charging the successful candidates for clearing the interview,” says Neeti Sharma, Senior Vice-President, TeamLease Services. Some even go so far as to set up temporary offices, hiring staffers, conducting interviews, allotting appointment letters and charging fees in instalments.Campus placements: Scammers pose as job consultants and directly contact the chairmen of colleges or institutes in small towns. They promise placements in top and reputed firms, and charge a lump sum. They mostly vanish before conducting the promised interviews.Hall of Infamy: Hiring scams1. Hyderabad scamIn June 2018, three men were held in Hyderabad for extracting Rs 2 lakh each from 60 unemployed youth in three months.Amount: Rs 1.2 croreAvoid being dupedHere is the checklist you should follow to foolproof your job selection process.Go to authentic, official websites: Most companies advertise new job positions on their official websites. So, instead of replying to dubious mails, go to the career page of the company and apply directly on the site. “In case of online job portals, make sure you are routing your resumes via the original sites, not responding to a link provided in a mail. “For foreign jobs, you should either go to government portals, or local job consultant websites in the country you are applying for a job,” says Hasan. Do not approach ‘agents’ in India to secure a foreign job posting.Post CVs with specific job positions: While posting your resume on job portals, make sure that the CV is written for the specific post you want. “Prepare the CV and cover letter so that they match the jobs you’re applying for and list only the relevant, recent job experiences,” says Sharma of TeamLease Services. Also, any mail you get in response should offer you the particular post you have applied for. Vague, generic designations are an indication of a fake offer.Never pay for securing a job: “No employer seeks any fee from a job-seeker at any stage of the hiring process,” says Abhijeet Mukherjee, CEO, Monster Jobs - Job Search, Career Advice & Hiring Resources (APAC & Gulf). “So beware of companies or individuals, who are seeking fees or charges for security deposit, registration or document verification,” adds Mukherjee. This can be through bank instruments or cash in an individual’s name, or through a wire transfer. Also stay away from offers that seek sensitive information like details about credit card or bank account, online banking passwords, etc.Look for red flags in mail/letter: A good exercise to ward off scamsters who approach you through mails is to scan the letter minutely (see Red Flags). “Beware if the mail is from a free e-mail address, not the company e-mail,” says Mukherjee. Also check for the format of the letter, spelling mistakes, poor syntax or wrong spacing. Another indicator is the name and sign of the person sending you the mail, as well as the company address and contact details.Validate mail by calling firms: If you have any doubts about the offer or appointment letter, call up the company on its registered landline number. Check if the person who has mailed you exists, and if the firm has a vacancy for the post or job you have applied for. “Talk to someone in the company and find out if the skills and qualification they need match yours,” says Sharma. Conduct proper research about the company before applying for the job.Be cautious about jobs that seem too good to be true: If you are being offered a 70-80% increment, or a remuneration that is not in line with the market trends, or with your rank and experience, it is most definitely a fake job. “Another indicator is that you are being handed an offer letter without a formal interview,” says Mukherjee. Ensure that you are called for a personal, face-to-face interview, preferably at the registered company address. If you are called to a residential area or a room without any company signage, be on the alert. Academically unfit to hold the position, the UPSC chief, they alleged, was handpicked for the job to manipulate the selection process and favour candidates of a particular caste.The appointments scam campaign hit the headlines when in a setback to the then SP government, the Allahabad HC quashed the appointment of Yadav on October 15, 2015. The court held Yadav’s appointment arbitrary, illegal and against the provisions of the Constitution of India but also ordered the state government to start a fresh selection process for appointment to the post.GOMTI RIVER FRONTThe Yogi government has wrote to the Centre recommending a CBI probe into the alleged multi-crore scam in Gomti Riverfront Development project, a dream project of the previous Akhilesh Yadav government.A senior official in Home department told ‘The Pioneer’ on Thursday that a letter recommending CBI probe has been sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs.A panel, headed by Urban Development minister Suresh Khanna, which assessed the Justice Alok Singh probe committee report on anomalies, recommended a probe by the CBI on June 19.Only a few days after taking over as Chief Minister on March 19, Yogi Adityanath had visited the riverfront for a spot inspection.After it came to light that the project was far off from being complete despite exhausting over 90 per cent of the budget, teh CM formed a probe panel under Justice Alok Kumar Singh.The panel was given 45 days time to complete the probe.However, it submitted its report much before the deadline, indicting nearly a dozen officials for their alleged role in the execution of Rs 1,590 crore project. However, the advocate general had raised doubts over the petition and had said that the probe was over. In its election manifesto for Uttar Pradesh, the BJP promised to create Anti-Romeo Dals (or squads) near colleges to "ensure the safety of college-going girls" and "check eve-teasing".In a document that has communal overtones written all over it--the manifesto has brought up issues like the Ram temple, triple talaq and Kairana "exodus"--it is not difficult to see the kind of provocation the BJP is hinting at by creating an anti-Romeo squad.* Each team to consist of two policemen. Mostly one male and one female* Two to three teams could be deployed in the jurisdiction of one police station* Number of teams deployed would depend on the number of schools and colleges in the area* They will move around near schools and colleges where there are a larger number of women* Their task is to identify eve teasers and troublemakers in a crowd* They will move around in uniform and in some cases in plain clothes* Teams would comprise constables, head constables, ASI and SI* Anti romeo squads can let off miscreants with a warning, can inform parents and even initiate criminal action depending on the seriousness of the case.Original script (romeo squad)The much publicised “anti-Romeo” squads of UP Police sanctioned by chief minister Adityanath Yogi came as a sign of decisive action so early in his term to check what is perversely called “eve-teasing” instead of by its proper name — sexual harassment of girls and women in public places by men of all ages to much merriment, and easily forgiven through the logic that boys will be boys or men will be men, and that women should just become invisible so that they do not attract attention. The typical forms the nationwide harassment takes are ogling and passing lewd comments which can slip into worse — age being no bar. It was thus assumed that the state police being out in force in marketplaces and outside colleges and schools will check the menace by being a deterrent. But soon it became clear that the initial positive assessment of the move was premature.Reports began to come in from every major city and town of UP of squads of police catching hold of men in public places and harassing them for ID cards. Many turned out to be husbands, brothers or fathers waiting for their female relatives to emerge from shops and other establishments. Clearly, charade of this kind is not sustainable the year round. Too many police personnel will be caught up doing too little for next to no result. Aside from this practical side of police administration, the fundamental point is that the right of women to go out with any man they choose to is being sought to be blocked. Checking wrong-doers or petty criminals cannot be an excuse for limiting the privileges of women. That will be going back to a medieval mindset. Besides, in a public place it is no business of the government to begin a search of individual menfolk without warrant. This too is transgression of liberty.The so-called anti-Romeo policing was tried out under the BJP in Gujarat and yielded no results. The party’s rationale for repeating the failed experiment in UP defies logic. But it is hard to push away from mind the call of Hindutva brigades in UP to form such police platoons to catch hold of Muslim young men on the allegation of “love-jihad”, the enticement of young Hindu women into marriage for the purpose of conversion. The present UP CM was in the forefront of this campaign. In time, there could be every possibility of the “anti-Romeo” campaign to be the thin end of the wedge to target young Muslim men, just as has been the case of targeting the abattoir business in UP, which contributes about two-thirds of the total exports of buffalo meat from the country worth about five million dollars.
