Haha. We had a few doozies from our daughter Abby’s second-grade teacher. Let’s call the teacher ‘dim Della’.The first hint was the first mid-year PT conference. Della was concerned that Abby wasn’t too worried about fitting in. In Della’s words, Abby didn’t seem to have ‘apathy’ for the other kids. It seemed like a strange use of the word, so when I mentioned that seemed like a good thing, Della clarified that Abby would go off on her own projects instead of helping other kids when she finished early. It became clear that Della meant ‘empathy’.The second was a requested sit down with Della, Abby and us. Della said Abby seemed to be exhibiting compulsive behaviour as every week when the class went to the library, she would take out the same book for the period. So we asked Abby about that. She said, ‘Well, I haven’t finished it yet.’. My wife and I burst out laughing.The third was another special meeting about Abby’s mental development. Abby had, horror of horrors, licked her desk in class! This was apparently a sure sign of obsessive compulsive behaviour. We asked if Della had asked Abby why she licked her desk. No she hadn’t. We called Abby in and asked. The answer from this 7-year old: ‘I wanted to know how it tasted.’The fourth was more serious and required a visit with both the principal and dim Della. Abby had kicked Della. Such aggression was apparently often indicative of ‘troubles at home’. The other special meetings and the word ‘spectrum’ was raised. It turns out Abby had finished her assignment early and was reading a book. Della insisted that Abby, not anyone else, but Abby alone help out some slower kids. Abby refused as other kids who had finished were reading their books, and when Della physically wrested the book away, Abby stood up and firmly kicked her in the shin. Della suggested a professional diagnosis be done.The school year was nearly over and my wife and I had had enough. This woman was trying to derail a normal child’s life. We demanded to speak to the principal alone and laid out all the events, then said we will not by any stretch of the imagination allow this woman to place a label on our child. The principal understood, said this was dim Della’s last year before retirement, and there were two weeks left before the year ended.We came to an agreement that either my wife or I would attend class with Abby for the next week and that would finish out the year for her. We were not having this woman alone with our child again.No other issues ever throughout elementary and high school. Perfectly normal and well-adjusted child.We sometimes wonder how many kids’ lives this idiot ruined or made unimaginably more difficult.

As a sixth-grade teacher in the seventies in a small mid-western town, the district provided free lunches during the school year to students in need. A young lady in my classroom after Summer vacation was lethargic, had unkempt clothing, and body order reflective of poor hygiene. After some two weeks of receiving free lunches, her lethargy disappeared, and she demonstrated an above-average capacity for learning. The dress and odor remained, and a home visit yielded information that demonstrated a family in desperate financial straits, with the home largely in disarray and without indoor bathroom facilities. Managed to get the family additional government assistance, but lost track of the family when the young lady moved on to “junior high school.”Years later, as a member of a federal Dropout Prevention team based in Denver. As part of our duties, we identified high school students who seemed to be struggling with school attendance, and sought out visits to their residences to determine the cause. Two students stand out. One was tracked to a local motel, where his family had established residence. The parents were employed as over-the-road truck drivers, and were rarely in town. The student was left to his own devices, and without transportation needs to get to school. The team assisted in meeting his transportation and nutrition needs, and he was able to remain in school during my tenure on the team. The other was difficult to find, but eventually located working part-time at a local business for a few days each week. His parents were not employed full-time, and the family needed the extra income. Although the team managed to obtain some financial assistance for the family, that student eventually dropped out.At the end of the the funding for that program, nationwide teams prepared findings on the results of their dropout prevention efforts. The top two causes for dropouts were identified as: 1) economics; and 2) a teacher. The latter cause meant that ONE teacher succeeded in so alienating the student that the student found it intolerable.
