What is it like to achieve single/double digit rank in IIT? And how did you prepare for it?

Edit: the primary aim of this answer is to motivate IIT JEE aspirantsA2AI achieved an All India Rank 33 in JEE Advanced 2013 (IIT JEE).21st June 2013, early morning - I and my mother were in New Delhi at my uncle's place. It was previously announced that JEE results would be declared on 23rd and so, we had plans to return to Kanpur (my home town) on 22nd night. It was well expected (from my JEE score) that I am surely getting an under 50 rank (FIITJEE has a powerful network). However, 21st June newspaper said that the "results would be declared at 5 pm today."I spoke to a few friends and teachers of mine. Almost all of them told that TOI prints incorrect news at times and official site says 23rd June as the date of result declaration.Same day, 5 pm - JEE site down. My heart beat increases - has the result actually come? After I and my sir failed to find my result, I finally called a friend of mine in FIITJEE Delhi.Me: Mera bhi result check kar de, site nahi khul rahi yaha se. (Please check my result as well, I am not able to open the site from here)He: 33Me: what ???He: 33It was surely expected that I am getting an under 50 rank. But again, truly getting AIR 33 was shocking!"IITB CSE it is!!" was my reaction and my mother hugged me tightly. I touched the feet of my elders. Everyone around was happy with the result. My cousin brought pizzas and cakes as a part of celebration. I got numerous phone calls (I was on roaming and my balance literally went down to 0 from around 500 Rupees :P ). Mother informed my father about the result and I informed my teachers. Everyone was overjoyed. I had been in contact with a few teachers in my previous school where I studied till high school.I remember a teacher of my school telling me when I was in 10th standard - agar 100 ke andar rank na aye, to muh dikhane na ana wapas (If you don't get a rank under 100, never show me your face).I told him that its AIR 33 and he was happy to hear about this.I got numerous phone calls from friends, teachers, relatives and most importantly press reporters, asking me about how I feel, what I would like to change in Indian system and what not. Then comes the big gun - Dainik Jagaran newspaper reporter calls me and tells me that I topped the IIT Kanpur Zone. We were all shocked because this wasn't expected at all! He also told me that it is after 5 years that a Kanpur lad topped IIT Kanpur zone. And the best part:(My father)Then comes the most rewarding part. You get to be a part of this:Lecture hall, IIT BombayIt was a bit disheartening to miss all the celebration in Kanpur and to not be with friends. However, FIITJEE is too awesome. On the next day. FIITJEE Punjabi Bagh center sent a car for me to pick up me and my mother. We were taken to FIITJEE Punjabi Bagh center where JEE result celebration was done considering that I was unable to present myself in FIITJEE Kanpur JEE celebration. I met other new IITians and interacted with them. Further, FIITJEE Punjabi Bagh was kind enough to provide us a cab and 2 staff members to drop us to railway station and help us in boarding the train. They also provided me a large sized Dominos pizza :DAfter coming to Kanpur, the streak continued. Parties, celebrations everywhere. Your friends really make you a celebrity. It feels great when even your friend's grandmother calls you especially to congratulate you. It feels great when the old lost friends come back. It feels great when teachers quote you as an example. It feels great to secure an under 100 rank in JEEHow I prepared for the exam? Here is all I could write about my JEE preparation: http://www.amangoeliitb.blogspot.in/If you are a JEE aspirant who is aiming for a top rank in JEE, you may consider reading a guide that I recently wrote on nailing JEE with a top 50 rank. Here is the link - A guide to get a top 50 rank in JEE!
