Social media is a powerful tool, which offers collaborations between users and allows the creation and exchange of user generated content (Moorhead et al). By now, most of us are aware of the ways social media has had an impact on our society, in business and the world-at-large. As such, social media has also brought a new dimension to health care as it offers a medium to be used by the public, patients, and health professionals to communicate about health issue with the possibility of potentially improving health outcomes (Moorhead et al). Social media helps spread information quicker and to more people and facilitates relationships and communication between patients, the public, and professionals. Overall, social media is invaluable to the improvement of health care.Social media allows users to access information quickly and communicate with others; this is particularly useful in the realm of health care communication. In a 2013 study, researchers found that social media was used to provide health information on a range of conditions to the general public, patients, and health professionals, which can provide much needed answers to medical questions (Moorhead et al). Health organizations are now able to reach a larger audience with health information, such as general information about flu shots or tips to avoid a cold (“Top 5 Ways”). As we know, social media allows for a tremendous increase in interactions between users and this can generate more available health information as users, including medical professionals, can create and share medical information online (Moorhead et al). Although there is a possibility of people wrongly self-diagnosing themselves or accessing inaccurate information, it’s important to note that 60% of social media users are more likely to trust posts by doctors over any other groups (Boachie). More hospitals, professionals, and clinics have gotten the message and are getting online, ensuring the right information is put where patients can access it (Boachie). On top of that, social media can widen access to those who may not easily access information via traditional methods, like younger people or lower socioeconomic groups (Moorhead et al).Various social media platforms allow instant communication with an infinite audience, which has several benefits for health care. For starters, patients and the general public are able to connect with health professionals to receive medical information; sites like PatientsLikeMe allow for discussion and the sharing of health information such as information on treatment and medication (Moorhead et al). Beyond that, there are countless opportunities for patients to connect with other people going through similar experience. A 2011 study found 620 breast cancer groups on Facebook, with a total of 1,090,397 members (Boachie); having support and sharing experiences and treatments is equally as important to the healing process as are medications and doctors. These online relationships also give doctors and physicians feedback that help them understand common reactions to medications and a general consensus about new techniques in the industry (Moorhead et al). Using this information that is readily available on social media allows for health care professionals to learn from patients reactions and adjust accordingly, improving their practices and future medical efforts.Using social media, the public can communicate with professionals to seek general information, as well as connect with others who have gone through similar experiences. This increased communication that social media allows widens the audience medical professionals can reach, increasing the amount of people who can be helped.
