We can be certain that St Teresa of Calcutta is rejoicing in heaven with the Saints, and happy to pray for all who ask her help.That is not to say that 100% of all practical decisions which St Teresa made during her lifetime were perfect. I am sure she would never claim as much. But she was undoubtedly a very holy woman of intense prayer and charity. Blessed is she when people mock her and persecute her and speak all kinds of calumny against her, for her reward is great in heaven.When it comes to the likes of the late Christopher Hitchens, who made so much publicity for himself out of judging and damning Mother Teresa’s life’s work, one wonders where he now is in the afterlife? My absolute all-time favourite female saint, after Our Blessed Lady, the Mother of God, is St. Teresa of Jesus, aka St. Teresa of Avila. She was given unbelievable graces by God, and like her contemporary and confessor, St. John of the Cross, she not only attained the heights of prayer on earth, but was also given the grace to write about it and explain it to us simple layman.The Carmelite Order publishes all of her works, but her work on prayer, The Way of Perfection, and her work on the spiritual life, The Interior Castle are probably two of my favourite spiritual books. St. John of the Cross is more “straight up the mountain” and takes a more male approach to the spiritual life, but St. Teresa is charming, chatty, and you learn more in her excursions sometimes then you do when she stays on topic.One man who managed to synthesize both St. Teresa, St. John, AND the Bible was Fr. Thomas Dubay, in his book, Prayer Primer, which I use for my teaching.Ellen Micheletti, below, has done an excellent job of giving us an overview of some of the more outstanding female saints, and I shan’t repeat them all here in my answer.I should definitely be remiss if I did not mention St. Catherine of Siena. And one of the giants of the last century, St. Teresa of Calcutta, (Mother Teresa), who not only helped the homeless, dying poor all over the world; but managed to call our collective soul to account for the sin of abortion in the contemporary world.Her writings on prayer and the spiritual life are priceless, and like any excellent saint who founds a religious Order, she spent most of her life in darkness, unable to feel or sense the God whom she served so well, and taught so many others to serve.Finally, one outstanding example in a field crowded with great saints, are two Italian women, well, one woman and one girl:St. Gianna Beretta Mollawho died that her daughter could live, rather than abort her. St. Gianna was a pediatrician, and her daughter, who is now also a Doctor, was at her canonization:Canonized By: May 16, 2004 by Pope John Paul IISt. Maria Gorettiwas assaulted, nearly raped, and severely beaten by her mother’s tenant, when she was only 11 years old, she died in 1902. She was canonized by Pope Pius XII, and her rapist entered a religious Order and was present at her canonization:Her body was recently in Chicago in 2015. She forgave her attacker before she died.

She left her teaching post with the Sisters of Loreto in Calcutta to look after the poorest of the poor. She picked up people dying in the streets and cared for them as they lay dying, giving them some human warmth and love. She gathered others around her in this work, and they formed the Missionaries of Charity.Their vocation is to the poorest of the poor, those who otherwise would die unwanted and neglected. Because the Order is run entirely on voluntary donations, the Sisters live very simply a spartan life, and therefore their homes don’t have all modern facilities and conveniences. For example, Mother Teresa wouldn’t let the nuns use washing machines even when they were donated, because the poor in India don’t have washing machines. I don’t agree with that, but still, we shouldn’t judge the very poor in India by our western standards.The Missionaries of Charity is a Catholic (Latin Church) religious congregation established in 1950 by Mother Teresa, now known in the Catholic Church as Saint Teresa of Calcutta. In 2012 it consisted of over 4,500 religious sisters. Members of the order designate their affiliation using the order's initials, "M.C." A member of the congregation must adhere to the vows of chastity, poverty, obedience, and the fourth vow, to give "wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor." Today, the order consists of both contemplative and active branches in several countries.Missionaries care for those who include refugees, former prostitutes, the mentally ill, sick children, abandoned children, lepers, people with AIDS, the aged, and convalescent. They have schools that are run by volunteers to teach abandoned street children and run soup kitchens as well as other services according to the community needs. These services are provided, without charge, to people regardless of their religion or social status.Some people don’t like this and have nothing but odium for her.
