St. Louis is a town past its prime. One of the largest and wealthiest US cities 125 years ago, it peaked shortly after the Worlds Fair of 1906. Even prior to that, it was losing growth potential to other Midwestern cities partly because of a shortage of bridges that couldn't maximize it as a rail hub, and the same problem later when trucking grew. The Chicago Fire caused that city to grow instead of St. Louis. St. Louis also had a major fire, that resulted in an all brick building code, and interesting architectural element known as the flounder or half flounder, built by riverboat captains as starter homes, the left or right portion of a Palladio and the center portion frequently not completed, seen in the Soulard neighborhood South of downtown. Other surviving neighborhoods are: Lafayette Square a small group of restored French design, the sizable Central West End which includes a dozen streets with houses of 10,000 square feet bordering Forest Park and the restored Chase Park Plaza hotel, restaurant and banquet center. Also very healthy neighborhoods are the Italian Hill, home of 40 great Italian restaurants and grocery stores, and St. Louis Hills, and South Grand a mixture of Vietnamese, Indian, Persian and Thai. Most of the rest of our neighborhoods deteriorated.Due to the fact that it is a "charter city" one of only a few in the country, it formerly could not issue long term bonds without permission of the entire State nor able to annex neighboring cities, and it does not exist in a County, but instead has to provide all typical County services, as well. Therefore white flight of the 1960s saw a decrease in population and taxes precisely when the need for services increased. Homes in many neighborhoods were abandoned, housing stock deteriorated, and the City became an eyesore, a crime capital, public schools lost their accreditation and more families moved out, leaving excessively large pockets of buildings to be burned down by homeless and drug dealers.The County continued to get wealthier, making for polarized race relations, a second major high-rise financial district centered in Clayton, the capital of St. Louis County. There were a dozen fortune 500 companies headquartered here in the fifties, and all but a few sold out to multinationals that moved corporate headquarters outside St. Louis, losing a large number of excellent paying jobs. The former wealthy families remained and they are still generous to the 1000 public charities, and world class museums, zoo, etc. We also have 20 colleges and universities, adding a slight liberal bent to voting patterns, despite sitting in the middle of a strong Republican bible belt.Another unique neighborhood is the Delmar Loop adjoining Washington University. University City is a large upper middle class city adjoining Clayton, Forest Park, and the Central West End, making it one of the most economically strong cities in the country, and the large population of a world class University and medical school make it an ideal place for arts, culture, restaurants, international cuisine, and people watching. Additionally, both Kirkwood and Webster Groves are each totally self sufficient cities each with a population of 40,000 and strong vibrant downtown areas. The other major population center is St. Charles/St. Peters with a joint population of over 200,000, half of which commute to jobs in St. Louis, many work at three of the areas six casinos that are located in St. Charles.Recent conversions of the former shoe manufacturers, printing companies, and hat wholesaler warehouses, neglected for decades, has been converted to Loft apartments. A city formerly known for closing at 5PM, and less than 150 downtown apartments spread over two high rises now has over 5,000 people living in beautiful lofts and now has ten convention hotels, dozens of restaurants and clubs, grocery stores and social events. The downtown area also is home to the Symphony, the fabulous Fox Theater, Cardinal Baseball, Rams Football, Kiel Stadium host of Blues Hockey, the Peabody Opera House, Lumiere Casino, Laclede's Landing, and the Gateway Arch.St. Louis mainly grew West of the Mississippi River, twenty miles in a semi-circle. Much closer are the bedroom communities of the Metro East which has never been a fast growing area, but the thirty distinctly small towns separated by cornfields ranging in population from 2,000 to 60,000 people, is the home of nearly 400,000 total Illinois residents, half of which commute to St. Louis to work. ********Despite the above, and fairly accurate critique, The St. Louis arts scene, is viable, healthy and can rightly boast a world class zoo..that is Still free to enter. Also, a world class Symphony Orchestra whose home is world class Powell Hall.
