What is the advice one should follow from Quora celebrities if he/she is new to Quora?

I have said this before publicly on a couple of occasions, and privately to hundreds of Quorans who message me.Please realize that Quora is a question and answer site for learning and sharing. It is not a platform for socializing, or an arena for competing and showing off one’s writing skills. It is not okay to write for getting views and upvotes. It is not okay to feel depressed if those views and upvotes do not materialize even when you believe the answer is good. Please realize that with good answers, and with time and patience, it is probable that the views and upvotes will come on their own. If they don’t come, do not bother. Simply write for your own satisfaction and for the use or benefit of the few who may have read them but who may not have upvoted it.It is not okay to write to popular Quorans requesting them to give your answers a boost by upvoting. At best you can write requesting them to take a look if they have time and suggest any improvements. If they respond, then, fine. If they do not, for any reason, it is not okay to feel aggrieved. It is not okay to beg for upvotes.Just because a popular writer has acceded to your request to read a couple of your answers and even upvoted them and written a favourable comment, it is not okay to keep sending links to all your answers in future and expecting the same support every time. They need time to read the answers of others too who come with similar expectations and not patronize the same set of persons every time.Unless a popular Quoran has specifically accepted your offer to read every single post, please send him links to your answers only rarely and occasionally to some particular answer where you are eager to have his opinion.Do not send routine, non confidential questions to popular Quorans in the form of private messages for a private answer which only you can read. Instead post the question publicly, and send an A2A to the popular Quoran. To make sure he notices it, you may send the link to the question as private message. If you do not wish your name to be known as the person who asked the question, you can choose to ask anonymously. Popular Quorans receive many such questions. Do not mind if they are unable to reply. Sometimes they have too many such questions already in their pending list. Sometimes they may simply not know the answer or not know enough to give a good answer. Popular Quorans always prefer to answer publicly so that their efforts reach more people and not just one private and often unknown person. For a one-to- one exchange, the matter should deal with a really deeply personal and confidential matter.Do not write to popular Quorans complaining of neglect and insult or hurt feelings if for any reason, they have not responded to your request for reading and upvoting your answers. Sometimes your writings may actually be bad. Rather than telling you the truth and risk of hurting your feelings, they may like to take the more tactful way out by not responding. If you are sure that your answer was not in that category, do not write to popular Quorans, with a feeling of ‘entitlement’ and believing you deserved a response and hold it against them for not responding. Also be patient. Sometimes a popular Quoran may not have had time to respond, for a couple of days even if he did intend to respond. Do not write hurtful messages to him complaining of delays in answering and saying that you are ‘losing your patience’. For heaven’s sake do not issue threats to unfollow if he does not respond. You did not do him any favour by following him. He never asked you to.Through this answer I am taking this opportunity to send out a message to all new Quorans particularly the young teenagers who have been flooding me with requests to read their answers and not stopping even after I have read and commented (and sometimes upvoted) a few samples of their writing. It is not my intention to hurt anyone’s feelings here. But this needed saying and I am glad I got this opportunity, without naming anyone.GV

What advice would you give someone who is new to Quora?

Warning:Very long answer. About 2400 words excluding another 1950 words in an another answer to which a link has been provided. Read later or bookmark if you are interested but don’t have time now, or skip reading completely, if not interested. This question is appearing in my feed more than two years after it was first answered by others in August 2015.I will take this opportunity to answer it and quote this answer in future in response to many FAQs that I receive in my message box.Question #1: Sir, I am writing regularly. But I don’t get views and upvotes. What should I do to become recognized here like you?Answer: All you can do is to continue and wait with patience and hope, assuming that you are good enough. Remember that there are literally thousands like you, all wanting to become famous and have thousands of followers and get rave responses and laudatory comments and plenty of views and upvotes. It just doesn’t happen with most writers, even if they are good. Some are lucky. An occasional answer on a particular topic might have been well received, but most are bypassed by most readers. The competition for eyeballs and the attention of viewers is intense here on Quora. While there may be thousands of readers, they cannot read all the answers, and they usually settle down to reading some selected answers and some selected writers whom they follow. So, while your answer might be good, it is more than possible that these readers have not even seen your answer. So, not having many views is no reflection on the quality of the answer. In fact many good answers don't get views, and many answers with a large number of views are not necessarily good answers. Learn to accept this. Simply remove from your mind this craving for upvotes and views. I know this is difficult. But this craving causes disappointment. Quora is for learning and sharing. Just do your part. Write a good answer, and forget about how it is being received. If it clicks, fine. Feel happy. If it does not, then don’t mourn. Forget about it, and write your next answer. As long as you answer on Quora for your own satisfaction without bothering about name and fame, you will enjoy and benefit from Quora. If you fail, then don’t treat it as a grievance against the platform and the readers, and in particular avoid feeling jealous of those who succeed here. Bide your time and hope for luck and success.Question #2: Sir, this answer of mine got xK views and x upvotes but still Quora collapsed it. Why? What is wrong? It happens. Just don’t take it too seriously. The reason will usually be mentioned. Sometimes the bots mention the wrong reason. There could be thousands of reasons, but the bots have been programmed to choose only from a limited set of reasons. Not in English, poor formatting, needs improvement are some common reasons the bots cite, but these may not be the real reason.Check if your text contains non Roman characters. In particular don’t begin your answer with a Hindi or other Indian regional language word. The bots probably scan the first line of every answer to check for invalid scripts, and if you start with a non-English word in a strange script, it is a red flag for the bot.Any regional language text that is posted as an image is very often flagged by the bot. Some people have tried this trick. Knowing that images in the answer are permitted, but not non English script, they have attempted answers in regional languages embedded in images. The bots pounce on such answers right away. Unfortunately a side effect of this is that some images, which show something relevant if there is some text in a regional language, might end up as victims.Check if your first line has a full stop. Sometimes when it is missing, bots may read the succeeding lines in continuation to the first line and get confused.Try not using bold text indiscriminately.Check your answers carefully with these points in mind, and edit them and resubmit with an appeal and hope for the best.Question #3: Sir, my question was collapsed for poor formatting/language not English. I have rectified it and appealed but my appeal was rejected. What should I do to get my answer reinstated? Should I leave Quora?Once your appeal has been rejected once, you can safely forget about this matter.Don’t appeal again. Just write your next answer and don’t take this personally.Thousands of answers are being collapsed. Thousands of appeals are being received by Quora. Only human moderators can look into appeals and take a rational decision. Sometimes the number of appeals is so large, and the moderators they have are so few, and they are so much overloaded, that it may not be possible to consider a second appeal. Quora, for practical reasons, has to put a full stop at some stage. One appeal is allowed. We should not expect them to consider a second appeal. If that is rejected, should we ask for a third appeal?Should we leave Quora because of this? Let us not treat a collapse of an answer as an insult or a humiliation. There is nothing personal here. Let us learn to laugh it off once we are sure we are not at fault and have done our bit. Don’t allow a decision by a lifeless bot to affect you. Simply tell yourself that while the bot may have collapsed it, we will not accept that as a competent final opinion or judgement. Let us simply put it behind us and look forward. The sky has not fallen down on us simply because some bot in some website collapsed an answer of ours. Treating it as an ego issue is pointless. Bots don’t have egos. Only we have. Clashing with a bot is like banging your head against a brainless rock. Also let us not believe we are so important that Quora’s human moderators must give us their attention, from among thousands like us. We are not paying customers here. Quora does not survive based on what we pay to them. Quora never invited us here. Quora never asked or humbly requested us to answer the question. So let us not believe we are doing Quora a big favour by answering a question and feel offended if our answer is rejected (even if it is done unjustifiably). Leaving Quora in a huff is our privilege, but Quora will not even be aware of our departure. They have millions of members. Each of us is just one tiny invisible speck. Even great Top Writers have left or been shown the door. No one is bigger than Quora. Let us humbly realize this. If any of us thinks we are too big or great for Quora, then we should find another site that panders to our ego. Quora can’t be messed with.Question #4: Can you give me some tips or points to be considered while answering a question?Answer: Have you really answered the question? Please check. You may have written some great or entertaining stuff without really answering. By all means tell a story if you wish, but be aware that many may not want to read that story. So first answer the question. Then start your narration and leave it to the reader to decide if he wants to read or not.Check your grammar and spelling. Read it at least twice before posting. Don’t be in a hurry for posting the answer. There is no prize for being the first to post the answer. Remember, however early you may be, unless your ranking in Quora is high your answer may be way down in the list later. So concentrate on quality and accuracy, and don’t try to beat the clock.Question #5: Private message: Can you please answer this question? (It includes a normal question that is asked privately to me, not a link to a publicly asked question).Answer: Ask your questions publicly. Don’t send private messages to popular Quorans asking your question. Use the private message box only for private and confidential exchanges and not for routine questions. If you wish, then send an A2A to the concerned Quoran. You can additionally copy the link to the question and send it to the popular Quoran as a private message and request him to answer publicly. An answer posted publicly may get answers from many more people, not just the Quoran you sent it to, and these answers may even be better. Sending routine questions to a popular Quoran in a private message box may not elicit a reply. Why would that popular Quoran take the trouble to write an answer when he will get only one view, from the person who sent it to him? Why should he deprive himself of the privilege of receiving comments from many of his readers? If you do not wish others to know that you asked the question, then post an anonymous question. If you feel that you will not be interested in the answers of others but are interested only in the answer of that Popular Quoran, then you are at liberty not to read the answers others. So please do not send a routine question that need not be confidential, as a private message to a Quoran.Question #6: I received a BNBR warning for my strong reply to an abusive comment. Why did only I receive it? Why not both?Answer: How do you know the other party did not receive a warning? Even if the other party got away, it does not excuse your violation. A fisherman does not answer when a fish asks why he caught only it, and allowed other fish to get away. Likewise a policeman cannot be asked why he caught only one traffic violator and allowed others to get away. Quora does not welcome street fights among its members. If someone has provoked you, you are not expected to take the law into your hands and punish him. You can only report him to Quora and let Quora take action. If you engage him yourself, he may report you instead. Quora does not have time to dig into the background and see who started it. They usually give marching orders to both. So next time you are tempted to hit back at some troll, hold yourself back and merely report to Quora and let them handle it.Question #7: I want to write in Hindi (or Tamil or some other language). I have seen some people who have done so. Can I? When they allow Spanish, Italian, French, and German, why not Hindi?Answer: No. Don’t answer in Hindi (or any other Indian regional language) here in this section of Quora. Write your answers and publicly readable comments only in English. Hindi is as yet not permitted. Even the other languages like Spanish are in separate sections and not here. You may occasionally use a non-English short sentence or expression if the context is relevant, but put that word in italics and include a translation in brackets not only for the benefit of non-Indians but for the benefit of other Indians who may not know the language. You can send private messages in any language. Quora’s bots don’t look into private messages unless the recipient reports them. If you violate this rule, your answer may be collapsed if noticed by the bot or if reported by any other reader. The fact that some answers still survive is due to the fact that those answers have either included a translation or perhaps no one has reported and the bots have not noticed it. Those answers may still be collapsed some day. Do not try this popular workaround of posting such an answer with non English text as an image. They too are known to have been collapsed later.Wait for the day when Hindi and more regional languages will become acceptable. There is hope if this newspaper report is true:With a new country manager, Quora has big plans for India(Edited to add: Update on July 4, 2019: Quora is now available in Hindi, Marathi, Bengali and Tamil. It is soon likely to be available in Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam an Gujarati too in a few months from now. You can now write in these languages in these sections)Question #8: What should I not do on Quora?Don't beg or plead for upvotes. Don't even end with ‘Upvote if you like’. Don’t celebrate your upvotes by editing your answer to announce them and gush and blush publicly (Wow! 100 upvotes already! Thank you so much! Never expected this!). Instead, sit back quietly and enjoy what you got, and let that motivate you to write even more good answers.Just as PDA (Public Display of Affection) is not to be indulged in at many places in many countries, do not indulge in PDJ (Public Display of Jealousy) here on this platform. Do not express your frustration and jealousy publicly when you felt that an answer from another Quoran that was ordinary got more upvotes than it deserved or it got more than what you got for your answer. You only end up looking pathetic. Just do your best, and if you didn’t get what you feel you deserved, don’t complain at what someone else got. Try again with another answer. If you wish to let off some steam, then downvote that answer or mute that writer you are jealous of, and see if that makes you feel better. Jealousy is common, but let it be your own dark little secret. You only harm yourself. The writer you are jealous of is not affected in any way. Do not make personal remarks about the writer if you don’t like his answer. Instead criticize the content and rebut them if you can.I will conclude this by giving reference to another old answer of mine with very similar advice on:How to write a good answer. What you should not do after you have posted your answer. How not to get discouraged if your first answer was not a success and about first impressions. Why beginners should avoid questions with 100+ plus answers already. Why you should not bother about less upvotes.Improving the chances of your answers being read and noticed.Public relations tips to improve your rapport with readers.Improving your visibility on this forum and becoming a better-known name.Avoiding bothering top writers needlessly requesting upvotes from them.Understanding the real purpose of Quora and using it constructively and not for socializing, dating or networking.Giving upvotes only that much importance and not going overboard when you get many and not being depressed when you don’t get them. You can see my answer to the above in this old post of mine:Gopalkrishna Vishwanath's answer to What are some tips for writing good answers on Quora?Sorry for this long answer, but remember I warned you right at the start. The answer in the link mentioned above is nearly as long as this (1950 words).GV

Why Do Our Customer Upload Us

I bought the CocoDoc Video Repair app for Windows to repair a TV show recording that would freeze when playing. Despite repeated attempts the program couldn't fix the video. So... Why do I give it a 5 star rating on Trust Pilot? Well, I wrote support and explained what happened and was amazed by the level of support I received from Kayla, one of their support team. I sent her the logs as directed and then uploaded the problem video and another to calibrate the repair. We probably exchanged 15 emails and their team tried to fix the video but couldn't do it. A few days later Kayla apologized that the video couldn't be fixed and asked if I wanted a refund! I didn't even have to ask! I said yes and a couple of days later I got a full refund. THAT kind of friendly, proactive support earns CocoDoc a full 5 stars.
