I definitely regret getting a PhD. I got a PhD in organic chemistry over a year and a half ago, and have been unemployed since - I haven’t been able to get a job since graduating. Compared to my peers, I feel like I haven’t accomplished anything in life; I don’t have a job, I have little savings, I don’t have a car, family, wife or girlfriends, let alone children. I’m back to living with my parents. I’ve applied to 2000+ positions in a wide variety of areas (pharmaceuticals, materials, analytical, consulting, post-doctoral positions, and even bachelor’s positions in desperation), only to receive the same generic rejection e-mail in my inbox each time. I sacrificed the peak years of my life (my 20’s) at the altar of science - to get, well… nothing.Unfortunately, society sends PhD students mixed messages. On one hand, there are people who say “wow, doing a PhD is great, you’ll be able to change the world!”. But once you graduate, you see the real value of the degree, which is…less than toilet paper, due to insane market saturation in both academia and industry. Another issue is that it is very difficult to find employment statistics of graduates of PhD programs - this data is crucial to being able to assess the relative strength of a program, because after all, you get a degree in order to get a job and make money, right? But most universities do not care about what happens to their graduates after getting a PhD, which is very unfortunate.I’ve missed out on a lot of real-life experiences due to the high opportunity cost of a PhD in organic chemistry - I didn’t have time to get a girlfriend or have any kind of a relationship since I was too busy working in the lab all the time. I’m almost 30 and have never had a full-time job. The other issue is that a PhD in organic chemistry leaves you with very little in “transferable skills”, and so it is extraordinarily difficult to get jobs outside of chemistry (and keep in mind that getting a job in the chemical industry with a PhD in chemistry is near impossible).

It happened last year. Class 12 had just started and I was already cracking under pressure. I never wanted to take up science but I had scored really good in my class 10 exams so I was left with no other choice but to go with my parent’s wish.Anyway, so that was a hard time for me. Suddenly, I went from the girl who always scored 90+ percent to the girl who barely managed to pass class 11.My then boyfriend was highly annoyed with my result. He called me up the same evening.Him - Listen how much did you score?Me- ( already depressed) 61%Him - What about chemistry? Failed?Me- No! I scored 42.Him- ( words dripping with sarcasm)Wow that's the highest score ever in the history of mankind.Me- (silent) I am sorry but…Him- I don't care. I got better things to do. Bye.He hung up. I was hurt. I expected him to understand me and tell me that its not over and I can still score good in my boards but instead of that he made me realize that I was good for nothing.A week went by, he was not talking to me. I was too busy with my own problems so I did not bother to approach him.Two weeks later, he asked me to wait for him after tuition. I was filled with hope. I couldn't wait to tell him that I have started working harder and that no matter what happens I will ace my next exam.He came after 15 minutes.Him- I don't have time. So lemme be quick. It's over.Me- ( Unable to believe what I heard)What?Him- Do you seriously think I will be with someone like you. You are so fucking disgusting. You lost all your charm. The only thing that was left with you was your grades.. And now?Me- But you know I am having a bad time…Him- I don't care! You know what Miss Ghosh, As long as you shine.. Nobody cares what's burning inside.That was the end. I was broken. I was depressed.I cried whenever I was alone. I lost faith in myself and almost gave up when I realized what my dream was. I was not ready to give up without a fight. Not so easily.Fast forward one yearCBSE class 12 board results came out. I was on cloud nine when I saw I had scored 88% and 93 in chemistry. I don't care what others think of my marks but I was so happy for myself that day.By evening all my friends had started calling to ask about my result. My ex too called me up to ask about my result. I too asked his percentage.Me- So how much did you score?Him- 65%Me- What? Oh..but.. You are a good student.Him- I was. My girlfriend broke up with me just 2 months before the exam. I was so depressed that I couldn't study well.Me- ( trying to end the call) - Sorry to hear that.Him- I never realized how much you cared for me. I was an idiot back then. Can you forgive me?Me- I forgave you long back.Him- So can we start afresh?Me- Ofcourse you can but I have already started my new journey.Him- Please yaar.. I need someone.. I am having a hard timeMe- So? Who cares? Deal with your own problem. Do well and I might consider you again.Him- What? You were never like this.Me- I wasn't. For most of his contemporaries, the job of a lab technician with the state govt. was a good deal. But Karsanbhai had dreamt big, the start of which happened with the sale of detergent powder that was manufactured and packaged in his backyard. This was an after-office business; he was running a one-man company on a bicycle, hawking neighborhoods and selling handmade detergent packets door to door. Priced at a nominal Rs. 3 per kg, which was about one third the price of leading detergents, the venture was an instant success. Karsanbhai branded his detergent soap, Nirma, after the name of his daughter. The man had created an entirely new customer segment in the detergent market.Today, the Nirma group has a consolidated revenue in excess of USD 1 billion, and employs over 15000 people. In 2004, Nirma's detergent approached 800,000 tonnes – one of the largest volumes sold in the world under a single brand.
