We take this things for granted, but only in 4 years many stations have lifts, escalators to move from one platform to anotherComplaint/grievance register to log online. This has helped people log their public services grievances and get response even if it is in 2 weeks or 2 months at the click of the keyboard or phone. Earlier one had to make multiple visits to this centre and still not get good response.Digitisation of most public services. From lengthy paper work to digitised updated. India exports IT services to the world but our own public services were pathetic. Over the last 4 years there has been tremendous change like in epf , license etc. Though a long way to go but the step have been taken to simplifyClean india campaign. Education of cleanliness being taught and advertised in schools. It will take a generation or two until we see the actual results but a journey of 1000 miles is taken by first step. I see kids advising their parents about not throwing garbage on the streets etc. …. I saw a WhatsApp video where a marriage party bus or something like that threw water bottle from the bus. Gentleman stopped the bus an argument for the person to pick up the bottle from the road side. That is awareness, that is feeling of pride of the nation.Toilets in each house On one instance. I was speaking to one auto driver who has his family in remote uttar pradesh. He said government have given them 20000 each to three brothers to construct the toilet in the village. His son 5 years old was in mumbai few months back had to stand in queue sulabh souchalay in mumbai where they stay. And hence prefers to go back to his home town where he does not have to wait or go in the field.Electricity access to each household in every and remotest village if india even if the terrain were not conducive. That is commitment.Clean power. Solar is clean power. It reduces CO2 emissions into atmosphere. Big move long term vision. Committed to global warming. Though I would say feedback becomes more like tracking , cleanliness should be of paramount importance. I personally experienced this at couple of railways stationsTrying to link Aadhar to driver's license. This will help track offenders in different states at one click. Long way to go but a step in the right direction. Applying for renewal online and then collect it after verifying documents when you collect them.People in distress primarily overseas gets immediate attention from MEA.Changing petrol and diesel rates at daily international rates. Thus making it independent of government control. Also loss to exchequer due to delayed rate change to oil companies.Promoting Generic medication and reducing prices on stents thus reducing price .. Any one can do all of above but to do it while keeping check on prices is truly commendable.Loans for small entrepreneurs running business from home. This adds to the tax as well creating jobs. It might still be informal sector until it gets the light. be it Selling Pakodas, Tea stall, stitching, sculpting, painting, handmade toys etc for the rural income to grow. ——— This was created as a joke by the Congress.. that educated should start selling pakodas as they not getting jobs.. ……. In my opinion no job is small or big as long as it brings in money to run the household. When a IIM passed post graduate makes a business of lunch business in Bangalore… delivery at work .. it becomes a tell tale in the MBA case studies… then why not this…. In other words, India’s foreign exchange reserves quadrupled during the tenure of the NDA Government.In the field of employment generation also government did a commendable job. The Sampoorna Grameen Rozgar Yojana with an annual outlay of Rs. 10,000 crore, half of it in the form of free foodgrains to States, is the largest food-for-work programme in the world. The Swarna Jayanti Swarozgar Yojana and other initiatives to provide micro-credit have unleashed a silent Self Help Group (SHG) revolution in the country.Other than these some other achievements were: impressive strides made in pharmaceuticals and bio-technology; the many successful initiatives to achieve energy security; and the bold and transparent steps to implement the policy of disinvestment.With sustained growth in GDP, the ratio of external debt to GDP was brought down from 23.61% in 1998-99 to 20.81% in 2001-02. NDA was the first government to create a separate ministry for rural industries.It goes to the credit of the NDA Government that it has kept the prices of essential commodities in check during its tenure.NDA government took bold steps to redeem its commitment to social justice. In order to institutionalise community participation in rural water supply programmes, projects were to be made community based.Shelter for all under Pradhan Mantri Gramodaya Yojana: A new initiative of ‘Rural Housing’ was undertaken under Pradhan Mantri Gramodaya Yojana to achieve the objective of sustainable human development at village level. An allocation of Rs.1710 crores was made for 2000-2001 to implement the Action Plan, which had the objective of conversion of all unserviceable kutcha houses to pucca/semi-pucca houses by the end of Tenth Plan.The quantity of foodgrains being distributed to the Below Poverty Line (BPL) section of the population under the Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS) was doubled from 10 kg. per family per month to 20 kg. per family per month at 50 percent of the economic cost. The scheme, with its focus on the poor, benefited about 33 crore people belonging to the poorer section of the society.Measures related to security:It was during NDA government under the able leadership of A.B. Vajpayee that India was made a nuclear weapons state fulfilling the longstanding aspiration of our people. It helped in immunising our country against nuclear blackmail by any hostile power. Not only that, the deft and courageous manner in which the NDA Government managed the post-Pokharan scenario needs recognition and appreciation.In our foreign relations, we can see clear imprint of diplomatic deftness of Vajpayee. Our relations were improved with USA and both leaders of respective nation paid visit to each other’s country to strengthen ties. Declaration of strategic partnership with Russia during Putin’s visit to India was also a significant step in this direction. Our constant engagement with international community also ensured that they too understood the reasons of regional instability and growth of terrorism. Pakistan and Afghanistan were recognised as its breeding grounds and it helped in putting pressure on them.It was on the personal initiative of Vajpayee that we tried to mend our relations with our neighbours. In case of Pakistan, the PM went an extra mile and concluded historic Bus Yatra to Lahore demonstrating our genuine search for peace with Pakistan. However, we also showed our leadership’s ability and readiness to teach a bitter lesson to the aggressor during Kargil war.One of the major achievements of NDA government was fulfilling the solemn promise made by the Prime Minister on August 15, 2001 and holding free and fair elections to the Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly in October.For the first time, a separate ministry for the all-round development of the North-Eastern States was created. The successful conclusion of a peace agreement with the Bodo Liberation Tigres and the optimistic direction in which talks for peace in Nagaland were some of the highlights in maintaining peace in the region.Measures related to democratic functioning of country:NDA government put an end to politics of destability by forming a grand coalition and running the same successfully by making the alliance stronger and more cohesive. The nation was spared from the burden of constant elections and its humongous costs.NDA government fulfilled its election promise of creating Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Uttaranchal as separate States, meeting the longstanding aspirations of the people of these regions. This was accomplished in a smooth and peaceful manner.Never in recent decades have Centre-State relations been as harmonious as during the NDA rule. Never the in the past had a Prime Minister so frequently consulted Chief Ministers and leaders of the Opposition parties on matters of national importance.Free and fair elections conducted in Jammu and Kashmir.The recent decision of NDA government to confer Atal Bihari Vajpayee with Bharat Ratna and to celebrate his birthday as Good Governance Day is in right direction of recognising his efforts for the development of the country.Now you decide how is he?

Indian Railways ticketing system is an online transactional processing system (abbreviated as OLTP). Though I haven't read anything official on the algorithm used by Ticketing system, the problem is essentially a resource allocation problem. If you are from Computer Science background, you might know the concepts of locking a resource while it's allocation is being requested. This way, when a request for booking a ticket comes, the system checks if there are any tickets available (read from db and then maintained in a shared variable). If the count is greater than zero, the algorithm takes a write lock on count variable, do the steps to register a ticket, decrements the count and releases the lock. Since our ticketing system is at such a large scale, the allocation might be happening from distributed locations. The concept of locking exist in distributed systems also although because of the nature of entire system composed of smaller systems present in distributed locations, the method of acquiring locks is not that straightforward and highly technical.
