Why would Democrats think a right wing Supreme Court majority would do that?The fact that even if Biden wins and takes office, if the election is close the Party of Trump (AKA the GOP) will seek to delegitimze the election and radicalize Trump voters, fomenting social disorder.The fact that Trump is the first authentic neofascist to ever hold the Presidency, and if he wins he stands a good chance of being able to convert America into a “managed democracy” along the lines of Russia, Turkey, Egypt, and Iran, where the outward forms of Democracy are preserved but Stalin’s maxim is observed. He said “It’s not who votes that counts; it’s who counts the votes.”In 1932, Germany was still a democracy….

But that’s what they are trying to do.Government functions most competently when it performs the functions that it has always been tasked with—such things as national defense, keeping public order and ensuring public safety, and public works such as roads and utilities. As I’ve said in other comments before, these things were the provenance of government even in Hammurabi’s time, and probably well before then,Humans formed governments to do these tasks for them, and the human race has plenty of experience in tasking government with such things for the betterment of all. Most Libertarians, all who aren’t outright anarchists, have no problem with this.But when the role of government expands to duties and functions that it never had before, it doesn’t do very well. The framers of the U.S. Constitution understood this, which is why they specifically enumerated the powers that the national government, through the People’s representatives in Congress, would be able to exercise. All other powers were reserved to the People, who could delegate them to their State government if they wished.Trying to make a big government more competent is about as useful as trying to polish a turd.

If the UK falls into a constitutional crisis as a result of the Prime Minister's refusal to obey a law of parliament, would the armed forces be called in to restore order?The UK IS in a constitutional crisis.Outside of Westminster and a few courts, there has been no breakdown of order.The police have not been needed to restore order, let alone the armed forces, as public order has not been lost.There isn’t any definition for a constitutional crisis, especially given the non-codified UK constitution, but we have all the following:Law courts ruling on the legality of government actionsParliament taking control of business, and placing limits on the governmentParliament being prorogued against the will of much of it.Parliament refusing to call no confidence in a minority government, or support an election.I’m trying to think how to make it worse. My best effort is in the Queen’s Speech ( 14th October) has something advancing the date of Brexit to the 15, 16, 17 or 18th of October- i.e before the law requiring an extension be requested on the 19th of October takes effect.The Queen’s speech is always a confidence vote. If Parliament votes it down, then that triggers the two weeks to form a new government. There is no PM, so the PM cannot request an extension from the EU.If it approves it, then it approves moving Brexit forward, so no deal happens.The only way to avoid no deal at that point is for enough MPs to back a unity government that can agree a PM, presumably with the program of ask for extension, then call an Election.If you want to resolve the crisis fast, either just leave now, or revoke article 50 now. Both would end the crisis- and cause the kind of public order problems the question imagines!
