Recently I attended a DCB Hackthon for Blockchain Technology and also Secured some Prize in startups category ( there were two categories one for students and other for startups).Hackthons are basically coding Competitions which are aimed at creating a Quick working prototypes of the ideas aligning to the themes.The whole process of Hackthon works like this.First the company or group of companies who conduct the Hackthons will publish this information in News papers, social media, Whatsup groups etc. Then people can register to these hackthons as an Individual or a Group.Generally they will publish the high level details about the themes of the hackthons. The one i attended had themes like using Blockchain Technology in Banking applications.Some hackthons will have free registrations and others will be charged.The Individual or the Team who wants to participate in hackthons should have good programming knowledge as you are expected to propose an Idea aligning to their theme and Create a working Prototype.The Hackthon day, you will reach their office or Premises on the entry Time specified. You and your team will register your names, mobile numbers etc. You will be given a booklet, pen, badge etc. Don’t forget to Carry your laptop.Once the Registration formalities are completed, you will be allocated a Team name or Number. You are supposed to go and occupy your place. There will be working place similar to your office with all Power points, Wi-Fi etc. The Wi-fi login credentials will be written on the board or slip and given to you. Once every registered participants and teams are in, there will be some inaugural speech and welcome speech by the organizers. They will talk about their company, business profile, hackthon themes etc. They will also introduce the mentors from various industries who are going to mentor you during the course of hackthon. Once this is complete, You are expected to go back to your place and start working on your idea.In the hackthon i attended, the inaugural function got over by 1:00PM and they told us that, we have next 30 hours of time to complete our prototype. Yes, the hours count starts and you are expected to work through out the night till the next day evening to complete your work. They serve Tea, Coffee, Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner etc. There will not be any place to sleep as you are expected to work whole night. However you can sleep on the floor or Cubicle!We worked on an idea which was based on using Blockchain Technology, it is kind of Smart contract, we developed the back end server code and hosted on Firebase and Created a front end Mobile app using IONIC2 framework and by next day afternoon, we created a demonstrable prototype of our Idea. In between the mentors come and talk to you to figure out how feasible your idea is and how aligned it is to the theme and they also give improvement suggestions.You are not expected to go home in the night as you are expected to work marathon till next day evening for 30 hours.We were able to finish our implementation by next day afternoon, we reviewed the working by installing mobile app on different smartphones etc. Then by we started preparing for the presentation. We created a Presentation describing our idea, the alignment to their business, the technology we used to implement it, the working prototype details and the value addition our idea can bring to their business etc.Each team will be called to present their ideas and demo their working prototype in front of a team of reviewers which involves the people from the organizing company, technical folks, external reviewers etc. You will be given 10 to 15 minutes time to complete your presentation. When we got our turn, we gave our presentation with demo of working prototype.Once the review got over, they called us for the presentation ceremony where the names of winners will be announced and the awards will be presented. So everybody gathered in presentation hall. Then without taking much time, they started announcing the names of the winners. We were (3 in my team) presented the award cheque and the cetificates followed by the photo ops.The winning teams were called again by the organizers and they briefed us about the next set of actions. They told us that, we will be called for the final hackthon which will be held in Bombay later next month.
