MY PARENTS LET ME DO THIS EXACT THING!My birth name was MANIKANTA PAMIDIPATI. My entire family, both immediate and distant, called me MANU (MANIKANTA is quite a mouthful).So I grew up with the name MANU. In my first grade (I was about 5–6 years of age then), my teachers started calling me MANIKANTA as opposed to MANU which i was used to hearing up until then.I felt odd responding to that and decided I needed a better (and shorter) name for my teachers to call me and I didn’t want them calling me MANU which was reserved only to my loved ones.So, I approached my dad and asked whether I can change my name. What follows is the recollected abridged version of the conversation which ensued.DAD: OK. There is a way to change one’s name and it’s quite a long process. But first, do you have a name in mind which you want to change to?ME: Umm.. No.. I haven’t thought about it.DAD: OK, come back to me when you have a name in mind and we’ll see what we can do.ME: (The next day) I want to be called GANESH.DAD: Why GANESH?ME: Well, I like the way how we always start our poojas with His prayers, so He must be significant.DAD: (Chuckling) OK. That seems like a good reason. Well, to start this process, you have to do two things.Get an affidavit (I swear to God I thought my Dad was making words up) which states your full intent to change your name from MANIKANTA PAMIDIPATI to GANESH PAMIDIPATI. Then, you will have to get the affidavit notarized by a notary public. (Now I was completely sure he was making words up just to mess with me).Next, you will have to go to a local newspaper and tell them that you have changed your name and it should be published in the paper.I completely understood the second point. Go to the newspaper office and tell them that I wanted to change my name. But the first point threw me off as I didn’t know what any of those things were.So I asked my dad to help and he took me to the notary public and got the paperwork ready and explaining everything to me alongside. When it came to the typing up of the affidavit, my dad asked me to explain as to why I wanted to change my name to the notary.The notary public smirked, and typed up the affidavit and signed and stamped it. Onwards we went to the newspaper office and we submitted the affidavit and the name change request. Again, my dad asked me to explain the reason to the assistant editor of the paper, and I did.He too smirked and took my request.One week later…BAM! I was GANESH PAMIDIPATI.I was very proud of myself for going through this and not facing any resistance from my parents.I went all over my class telling all my classmates that I’ve changed my name and from now on I should be called GANESH.To the people who haven’t gone through this, this is how a typical name change appears in the local newspaper in India.This was the best decision I’ve ever made in my life as it was a complete, 100% my decision and I’ve lived with this new name for the past 27 years and I still love my name. So much so, that I’ve gotten a tattoo of my own name on my arm.Now, how PAMIDIPATI became SATYANARAYANA is another story for another time.(I will try to find the original newspaper clipping of the name change and post it if found.)
