I saw this questions come up on my feed and it made me smile. Reading some of the answers, I was really shaking my head at some of the rash generalizations.Seriously, I could write a book to answer this question. I often joked that if there was ever a Jeopardy category on Pennsylvania I would probably ace it.There are 67 counties in Pennsylvania, and I have worked in about 50 of them. Other than Erie, I have worked in every area. I grew up in Western Pennsylvania and my career in technology began as a field service tech working in Western Pennsylvania.I lived in State College for a few years, and then moved to Williamsport, working as a field service tech traveling throughout the area from central to northeastern Pennsylvania.I lived in center city Philly for a brief time on the 1970s. Most recently I worked as a consultant systems engineer servicing clients in a major portion of Eastern Pennsylvania.Each region has its own personality. I could give you a list of small towns that are isolated and living in the stone age, and I don't mean that in a good way. There are small towns in rural areas where the economy has tanked because the steel mills or coal mines shut down years ago, and the local economy is horrible.There are other areas where you see people living a simple life, such as Lancaster County, right next door to those living in a modern world. There are many areas of Pennsylvania covered with farms.There is the Philadelphia area, which definitely has the big city mentality. Like any large city, it has its share of bad neighborhoods and crime. But Philadelphia is full of historic sites commemorating the birth of a nation, and I enjoy visiting the area often.While Philadelphia is rich in history from the 1700s, Pittsburgh has a rich history as a focal point of innovation during the late industrial age of the late 1800s and early 1900s. One of the other answers says that Pittsburgh has more of the mindset of a mid-western city, and I would agree with that. As Pittsburgh has transformed from a smoke stack steel mill center to a more diverse economy, the city has really cleaned up over the years.Speaking of history, everyone has heard of the great Civil War battle that took place in Gettysburg. While you are visiting Gettysburg be sure to visit the Eisenhower National Historic Site. The farm where Eisenhower retired home after he left the White House in 1961 is a cool place to visit.If you like to go hunting or just enjoy the great outdoors, the northern tier of Pennsylvania is rural and home to many cool places to get away from it all. While you are traveling along the northern tier of Pennsylvania check out the Pine Creek Gorge, sometimes called The Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania.The Poconos are famous for their ski resorts, but there are a few really nice ski resorts in Western Pennsylvania, with better ski slopes than the Poconos.The comments and answers that say there is not much to do in Pennsylvania are made by people who don't get out of the house much. I have never been the type of person to sit around and gripe about nothing to do. I've always been an explorer. If you are looking for something to do, you can find it in Pennsylvania.What is it like to live in Pennsylvania?I have lived in four different areas of Pennsylvania, and have worked in most of the major towns and cities. I easily write a thousand word essay on how each region is different in many ways, but that would simply drive home the point that Pennsylvania is too diverse to give a one size fits all answer to this question.
