PDF Editor FAQ

What are the biggest mistakes people make when visiting New Zealand?

The answer to this can be so different depending on the angle you’re looking for. So I will just give a few quick tips based on my experience traveling there.Time Restraints: People don’t give themselves enough time to travel around New Zealand and try to fit too much into a short amount of time. Trying to visit Auckland, Hobbiton, Rotorua, Tongariro, Christchurch, Queenstown, and Milford Sound all in 1 week? Not gonna happen. Give yourself more time or pick a small area to explore.Packing: Pack for all seasons[1] no matter what time of year you go. The climate is very different from place to place, and the weather can change drastically. Layers are important.Typical Sights: Sticking too much to the usual sights of New Zealand instead of exploring a bit “off the beaten path” (I hate that expression). Yes, Queenstown is cool. Milford Sound is, in my opinion, a must-see in NZ. But there are so many other places in the country that you don’t hear about as often, and it would be a shame to miss out on them. I’m guilty of this, and I wish I’d made more of an effort to see other parts of NZ (even though I did see a lot).THE SUN: The UV rays are strong down in New Zealand. Wear sunscreen/sun cream even if you don’t think you need it. I spent a week with very painful, very ugly skin after an afternoon outside sans sunscreen.Budget: A lot of people don’t realize just how expensive New Zealand is. Even traveling “on a budget” will cost a lot. Get detailed when planning your trip so you know how much you really need[2]. Leave some wiggle room in your budget, especially if you want to do a lot of activities.“It’s Basically Australia”: Not true. At all.Overdressing: New Zealand is super laid-back. Jeans, t-shirts, jandals…this is a more than acceptable outfit for just about any occasion. No need to overdress or pack a plethora of fancy outfits. Bring something nice for those rare occasions, but keep it casual. (Of course this is totally up to the individual, but I met travelers who brought suitcases bigger than themselves so they could pack 10 pairs of heels, a flatiron, and an outfit for every occasion…only to find that nobody else was dressed up)I’m sure I could think of more with a bit of time, but these are the things that popped into my head.Footnotes[1] New Zealand Packing List: Everything I Brought to New Zealand[2] Cost of Traveling New Zealand: How Much Do You Really Need?

We often say, "India can never produce another all-rounder like Kapil Dev." Is it because Kapil was too good or that the quality of all-rounders in India had always been bad?

Not just India — there is hardly anyone of the caliber of Kapil Dev produced anywhere in the world ever — he is the only test player to take 4000+ runs and 400+ wickets. That is a supreme balance — there have been players who scored more runs or more wickets, but not both. There are only a handful of players who can be considered both a great batsman and a great bowler equally. Hadlee, Imran, Cairns and Botham would be the only others in that category in tests. Kapil has both more runs and more wickets than everyone in that list. I’m often fascinated by how little fans of today respect the genius that was Kapil.Kallis is an excellent batsman, but his bowling average of 32+ with no 10 wicket hauls would put him as a batsman who can bowl inbetween — like Jayasurya, Sobers, Afridi. They were not the first choice bowlers their captain would go to. Kapil has 8 test centuries, 2 10 wicket hauls, 23 5 wicket hauls in tests and average below 30— incredible record. Kapil was often the team’s best bowler and the team’s best batsman (Gavaskar was the only better batsman at the time). More than the runs it is the impact he created in each role. Imran was the other one in that category. Both won the world cups for their team.Even in ODIs, Kapil has an incredible record with 253 wickets and 3783 runs — with both the averages in mid 20s. Records | One-Day Internationals | All-round records | 1000 runs and 100 wickets. There are a handful of all rounders with more wickets in that list, but those have higher bowling averages and not considered very lethal (like Jayasurya, Afridi, Kallis) and there are also a few all rounders with more runs, but again not with high averages or considered consistent batsman. And most of those in that list are from the last 2 decades where more games were played and thus more runs & wickets. If you consider by averages, Kapill’s is hard to beat. There are a few conditions where a team can have non-specialist bowlers in their team and still take wickets. A lot of times in England, New Zealand and South Africa the conditions can be good enough for bowling that all you need is these non-specialist bowlers to take a chunk of wickets and go deep in batting. These countries produce all rounders. In India or even in Australia and West Indies, you have to earn your wicket and the dibbly-dobbly medium pacers and part time spinners are sent out of the park. The teams thus tend to pack more of specialist bowlers and tend to produce fewer all-rounders.Again, weaker teams in general tend to produce more all rounders — they tend to go for the bits and pieces cricketers as specialists are much harder to groom with limited experience. New Zealand (during their low times), Afghanistan, Bangladesh are examples of this. In gully cricket everyone does everything, only in higher leagues do people specialise.Stronger teams like Australia, India and South Africa tend to go for the specialists (Kallis, Kapil and Steve Waugh are exceptions than the rule) as the specialists tend to win better when all conditions are considered. A specialist like Warne, McGrath, Steyn, Bumrah can penetrate far deeper into the other teams than non-lethal allround bowlers can. In the same way a specialist batsman like Sachin, Ponting, Kohli or Kirsten can cause incredible damage to the opposition. With great specialist batsmen around, a team might not have to bat too deep and thus can afford to have bowling geniuses who are not valued by their batting performances (Mcgrath, Murali or Bumrah can hardly hold the bat).Weak teams with useful allrounders can sometimes spring a surprise (India in 83, Pak in 92 and SL in 96) though. Finally, while India (like everyone else) has no allrounders of the caliber of Kapil there have been normal allrounders like Sachin (with 200 international wickets), Sourav, Agarkar, Prabhakar, Ashwin, Jadeja, Pandya, Jadhav, Bhuvaneshwar etc. in the recent years.

Why does the Queen of the United Kingdom not have a British passport? Does she not need one when she travels outside of the UK and its territories? Is there anyone else in the world who does not require a passport to travel abroad?

As the Queen Elizabeth is the Head of State of 40+ countries: United Kingdom (4), The British Overseas Territories (14 - 17), The Crown dependencies (3), and The Commonwealth realms (16), even if she were able to travel as a private Citizen, she'd have to find somewhere other than one of her own countries (listed below), the 27 other EU states and the 4 EEA states, before a passport / visa would necessarily be on the need to pack list, then it's a question of which one:Akrotiri and DhekeliaAnguillaAntigua and BarbudaAustraliaThe BahamasBarbadosBelizeBermudaBritish Antarctic TerritoryBritish Indian Ocean TerritoryBritish Virgin IslandsCanadaCayman IslandsFalkland IslandsGibraltarGrenadaGuernseyIsle of ManJamaicaJerseyMontserratNew ZealandPapua New GuineaPitcairn IslandsSaint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da CunhaSaint Kitts and NevisSaint LuciaSaint Vincent and the GrenadinesSolomon IslandsSouth Georgia and the South Sandwich IslandsTurks and Caicos IslandsTuvaluThe United KingdomThen again several entities have been known to stick her image on their stamps, in advance of a visit, which would likely suffice as official photo Id, if asked eg.From: Rezā Shāh Pahlavī (1919-1980), Queen Elizabeth II (*1925) (Iran) (Visit of Queen Elizabeth II) Mi:IR 1089,Sn:IR 1168Or:From: BRAZIL - 1968 State Visit of Queen Elizabeth II 1v - UM
