CHURCHILL.Churchill of course wasn’t proposing the murder of Ambassador Shigemitsu, who was returned safely to Japan according to diplomatic protocol, he was speaking figuratively.It may seem odd to use diplomatic language in a response to a sneak attack, but this was before the invention of Twitter.

PVC (Param Veer Chakra) Is the India’s highest wartime gallantry award. Let me burst few myths.“Martyr” status doesn’t exist in Indian Government setup. It is a word made by media and generally used by English speakers when an Army soldier (defence services) used to become fatal battle casualty during a battle in face of enemy. In Army - there is no word “martyr”, it is fatal battle casualty in face of enemy or casualty. The media used “martyr” to make it look more ravishing in the headlines as understanding “fatal battle casualty” for common people isn’t easy.When a soldier is declared “fatal battle casualty”, he receives the following honour.Guard of Honour of Army.Guard of Honour of Police. (Even when an Army Soldier becomes fatal battle casualty)An Army Officer laying wreath on behalf of commanding officer of the unit, Army Commander of respective Army Command he belongs to and station commander in whose area of responsibility the funeral is being conducted.District Magistrate has to be present during the funeral of soldier and lay wreath on behalf of himself as well as Chief Minister. They also meet the family of the deceased soldier.Member of Legislative Assembly and Member of Parliament should be present at funeral. (If present in the constituency at time of funeral, otherwise their representative will lay wreath. The representative comes from their respective political parties).When an Army soldier become fatal battle casualty then after post-mortem and legal proceedings, the commanding officer sends a official document with brief of incident leading to casualty and declaration of fatal battle casualty in form of situational report is forwarded to the responsible station headquarter. The station headquarter forwards the same to the military station headquarter of deceased soldier, after which the station headquarter informs the District magistrate about fatal battle casualty status of the soldier and instructs the DM to do the needful. DM informs the ceremonial police battery to reach the location of funeral to carryout the ceremonial part and follows the rest of the proceedings.Now, in case of Police, anyone becoming fatal casualty is termed as killed in line of duty and get similar honour. Therefore, you can use word “martyr” for Indian Police Officers who sacrifice their life in line of duty as per your convenience. But “martyr” is not a declared term in government dealings.
