First of all, I would like to address all the answers to this question on Quora, which were written at a time before 2020. All the facts in those, negative or positive, are right but for the period before 2019-2020. Even if I was a part of the college during that tenure, I might end up writing something the same about the college. The main reason for college not being so promising earlier was the fact that the college was under its initial stages of development in all spheres.But now, talking about 2019-2020 and the period after that, things have changed drastically.CurriculumOur curriculum is one of the beautifully designed curriculum keeping the demand of industry by taking what is necessary for students.IIIT Kottayam is far ahead of other colleges in terms of its curriculum, which initially was not being impactful because of less recognition, but now things are changing. IIIT Kottayam follows the curriculum of IIIT Hyderabad. As the Institute has a supreme focus on developing a (great) coding culture among its students, all the core skills required for instilling the notion to code is taught in the 1st semester itself. Our college doesn't have physics, chemistry, or any other subjects which are irrelevant in tech-related industries. The curriculum is designed in such a way that all programming related stuff is well versed to the students at the end of 2nd year itself(whereas other colleges may take up to 3 or 4) and Data Science and Machine Learning are taught in the 3rd year to make students modern industry-ready. Besides, all this emphasis is all laid on soft skills like communication and students being multilingual, having knowledge of French and German. In addition to all this, critical topics of business studies are also taught so that students have a ground-level reality of the business handling of tech industries. Our curriculum is the finest in all over India.Coding CultureThe central idea of the college revolves around its coding culture. Earlier, due to less strength of students, the coding culture was not able to make an impact, but in the last year, many national-level feats have been achieved by the students. Often intra-coding competitions are held to evaluate their skills.InfrastructureThis is one of the few new IIIT’s with its campus. The college has almost completed Phase-2 of construction, and thereby all the necessary things are available on the campus.Classrooms have full centralized AC, and lectures are given on a whiteboard with a projector.The college has a student-driven mess that provides food, keeping in mind the diversity of students in the college. North Indians are comfortable with the food provided here.There are a total of 4 boys hostel and 2 girls hostel. The college has an auditorium to accommodate around 150 students. Construction of all sports ground is near to end and will be ready soon.Three computer labs have 24*7 access and one electronics lab.The college has a well equipped Gym with all the facilities.The incredible thing about this college is that all buildings have WIFI access with a speed of around 300-600mbps and in labs with LAN of 1 Gbps or more. Yes, 1 Gbps. Students can use them 24*7 with no limitation. Our college is connected via the NKN(national knowledge network, which provides high-speed internet to all of the IIT’s, NITs, etc.Although the college has a small library, the institute has provided full access to a virtual library.The college provides daily access to the nearby town through a bus.During the pandemic, the college has successfully conducted all its classes on a self-made online platform Moodle along with Virtual Lab.To meet some of the demands of students, the college has also provided the facility to access premium courses available on Coursera for free.The college has also provided every student with their G Suite account(which means unlimited Google Drive Storage along with various other perks).Students are also provided with GitHub Pro Membership.LocationIt might just be at the back of your mind, something that your parents might be completely ignoring, saying that location doesn’t matter, the quality of education does. Or maybe they would be anxious about the fact that it is situated in Kerala, which rarely ever reaches the headlines in the national news channels for something good. Well, let me put your mind to ease for both cases.It is located in Kottayam in the Valavoor village, with the nearest town (Pala) being around 7 kilometers from the college.And trust me when I say this, it is situated in the middle of heaven. The environment of the place is something that people just dream about and watch in old Bollywood movies.There is a hill right behind the hostels, which is excellent for trekking (I don’t think it is allowed but has it ever stopped us?).As soon as you step out of the campus, the pathways are lined with lush green trees on both sides. Calling it a boulevard wouldn’t be wrong.It is like a whole world that exists on the college campus. If you come from any of the cities with the destroyed lungs due to pollution (shoutout to Mukesh), you will finally realize what clean air is.The place is almost addictive. Just the overall environment that is created as a combination of people and nature is hard to leave behind. (Yup. We have gone crazy in the lockdown having to be away for seven months and more!)And of all, the heart of any place, the people; they are right. All the people that we have met, as we had a tour of sites like Kottayam, Kochi, Pala, etc., were very welcoming; not once were we disappointed. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that it’s a very safe place.I would say that if you want to see what IIIT Kottayam is at this moment, don’t search for the pictures on google; they are old pictures. Very few colleges all over India have an Incubation Centre and IIIT Kottayam is lucky to have a well established one. The college has got Central Government's “MSME Incubation Facility”. AIC has already incubated 20 Startups in a span of 5 years.The college facilitates students to do research work in any technical field and all professors are dedicated to help students in the research work. Many students have published the research work in internationally/nationally recognized conferences/journals.IIIT Kottayam is a proud member of IEEE. The ICITIIT-20 conference was held at IIIT Kottayam. The conference invited scholars from around the world, presenting their papers, and giving lectures covering recent trends in ICT. ICITIIT'20 was technically co-sponsored by IEEE Kerala section (CONFIRMED), IEEE-USA (APPROVED), AIC-IIITKottayam, and NIT-Calicut.The college is well versed with the importance of quality of education so it makes sure that all faculty are holding Ph.D. from an internationally and nationally recognized university.The college has 2 visiting faculty from Munich.A MoU was signed between IIIT Kottayam and University of New Brunswick. This has channelized faculty visits to and from TUM,Germany which boost the research and development activities at the institute. We have also established a collaboration with TUM-Germany for undertaking collaborative teaching of selected courses to UG students. That is, every year, our faculty is conducting credit courses at TUM Germany and German Professors are engaging credit courses at our institute.Placement and Statistics:As a developing institute our placement statistics are dynamic and increasing when compared to the first batch’s placement. So far few companies have visited the campus due to not well known names in the list of IIITs but year by year the list of companies and quality of companies are increasing.Last year some of our seniors qualified for TCS 7-12 LPA package role and one qualified to get 12LPA while others 7LPA.This year the placement package by TCS was 11.5 LPA and most others got 7-9LPADue to active participation in the coding contest hosted by placement companies like TCS codevita, Facebook Hackercup our seniors are getting recognition in the product companies. This culture is being transferred to juniors as well to accomplish better than them.The current year has been hit by pandemic but still some of our seniors were able to grasp good opportunities in companies such as:SAP LabsGoldman SachsTCSMindtreeSotiCapgeminiKofluenceInternship offers have also been received by some of our seniors from companies like UST Global, Ericsson, Survey sparrow, Robert Bosch along with PPO’s.The placement and internship scenario also majorly depend on the student’s interest. Few people do engineering for relief from parents and end up just wasting their time in college. Few people do that because of taking a Non Medical stream in their High School. And at last few are there who go to college for nice weather and change in their regular routine of watching their parents. One should have a dream to do something good to society in a way that he/she likes. So at last there would be few students in every batch who belong to the above mentioned but those who want to pursue their dreams should be focussed because college does not stop you from searching courses from the internet and getting to know new technologies in order to grab new internship and placement offers. College will only provide you with the opportunity it's on you how effectively you use it.There are ample of opportunities to get good placement like connecting in linkedin, performing well in hackathons, learning new techs, searching for internships and jobs regularly and believe me some of the above mentioned internships are grabbed through these methods.College would grow and increase at its own pace(which is pretty good in the current scenario) but in order let it grow even faster every individual will play an important role.
