How do I get my money from cheaters like Club Mahindra?

Simple answer is No.According to cancellation policy of Club Mahindra, you are eligible for refund only if you cancel your membership within 10 days of signing application.Let me tell you my story, I was managed to get refund from them.I got a call from CM and they offered free holiday for 2 person. They asked me to come along with my wife to collect holiday coupon. When i asked for gift they insisted me to attend short seminar and I agreed. This was not actually seminar but 45 min long 1 to 1 meeting with their agent.Initially agent was quite humble. He asked about my occupation and salary and questioned about places I visit & like to visit. I asked him directly come to the point and explain what ever he is offering. This was turning point suddenly he start questioning on my financial abilities and because I was newly married and with my spouse i fall into his trap. This is the reason why they call you with your spouse. He said they are offering 2 days extra and some international hotel card only for today. So I paid 22,200 same day with my Credit card and for EMI they took impression of my credit card. After coming back home, When I read terms, I found he never explained about annual maintenance fees, which was around 12K and increase 15% every year. I checked on net there were several cheating cases and most of them never got refund. I called that agent and asked him to cancel my application because he never told me about annual fees. He asked me calm down and promised to meet me next day. But for next 2 days he was not able to come to my office because of xyz reasons. He was actually trying to pass 10 days so that I can not get refund. So i decided to cancel membership myself and took following actions:A) Blocked my credit card so they can not process ECS application.B) Sent cancellation request to [email protected] and [email protected] with following attachments1. Member Copy of Registration form2. Payment receipt (Credit card payment slip)C) Sent hard copy of same cancellation request with photocopy of above docs via speed post to club Mahindar Chandigarh and Chennai office. Now I had enough proof that I requested for cancellation 3 rd day of signing application. Agent was still giving excuses for meeting.I got call after 3 days from Chandigarh office, and they told that your cancellation request was accepted and you will get refund within 30 days. And finally I got refund after 18 days of this call.Hope this will help some one.

What advice would you give to a first year BS-MS student at IISER?

Deya Chatterjee and Vedang Puranik have been good immediate seniors (you are free to imagine me saying lines like, “How did they grow up so fast? It feels like it was just yesterday when they walked into this college, with those nervous faces and loaded suitcases!” in an emotional voice! xD ), giving very well detailed answers to cover several aspects of what a first year student at any of the IISERs may need to know.Yet, the multiple A2As make me feel that I should drop in a few suggestions, and hopefully, I can provide some new information too.Alright, so here we go!First, coming to registration day. Yes, surprise! Your parents are going to have an interaction session with the deans, the Director and other professors, while you’ll be handling the registration process yourself. Do not panic though. There would be lots of volunteers, most from the batch just one year senior to you (and hence they have the freshest memory of how the registration process was!), and they are ready to help you in whatever way they can. Do not be afraid to approach them, however silly may your doubt be. This is your introduction to being an independent person, thus, take it in stride.Next, participate in the events organised for you guys by the seniors, as much as you can. This will help you come out of your shell, and help you make friends. Trust me, this is very important, as IISERs are usually small, close-knit communities, where almost everyone knows everyone else, and that’s how we function. Hence, mixing with people would be very helpful for you. Yes, I know mess food isn’t like home food. Yes, I know you miss your family. Yes, I know you may find the professor of some course scary. (All examples are based on true incidents, and these are the most sane reasons why people have hidden in rooms!) But the best way you can learn how to deal with things, is to face them head on!Join clubs you are interested in, but also check out the clubs related to things you have never tried, or things you have been afraid of. For me, it was public speaking, and hence naturally, I went for as many debates as possible with the Literary and Debating Society at IISER M! Besides, as Vedang pointed out, in the scientific field, you need to be a good speaker, as you would be giving seminars, presentations, defending your thesis, and more, in the future.Interact with your peers, seniors, and professors freely. They are all nice people, who would love to get to know you, work with you and even help you whenever needed. Yet, be sure not to blindly follow anybody. Think about it yourself, and ensure that you are not being dominated and/or forced to do things you don’t wish to do.Also, continuing from the previous point, while taking advice from seniors about things like say, future plans, internships, courses, study material, etc., try to talk to more than one person. This will help eliminate personal bias. (Yes, even asking questions about how a particular Prof is, is now a scientific experiment!)Like others have mentioned, you will suddenly have lots of freedom, with no one to directly monitor what you do. You need to figure out how to make best of this opportunity, by regulating how you use your time. Essentially, you shall have to make sure you don’t get carried away with just one thing. Don’t keep studying all the time. Don’t keep watching shows all the time. Don’t keep playing games all the time. Don’t keep fretting about “your future” all the time. Balance is important.Forget about high school. Seriously, forget it. The concept of “biology background student”, and “mathematics background student” that instills fear in the incoming batches, is a very serious handicap. You are at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research! Have some faith in your college, and trust us when we say that the courses begin from the very basics, so that any student who had no clue about the subject prior to that course, can still manage to do well. I agree, it is hard to believe. Even I would have laughed if someone told me that I could get As in the courses of biology. But I did. And so can you, in whatever course you are afraid of. Even if you get a B, that is good enough too! While we are talking about academics, let us get one other thing clear too. All of you who come to IISERs, are the best students of the country. You guys are KVPY scholars, highscorers of JEE Advanced, and in the top 3% of the country’s highschool boards, in a country with one of the largest student populations! Hence, even if you do not do that well in a particular test, or an entire course, do not lose heart. You have the potential in you to do well, and are competing among the best students in the country. Take pride in that, and keep working hard.Lastly, don’t panic. A lot of incoming students, are already worried about internships and PhD applications on the very first day, scared that they may fall behind, as if it is a race. It isn’t. Take your time, try to find out what you like, and interact with people to learn from their experiences. Don’t be scared if you haven’t decided about your major yet. You have at least 1–2 years to finalise upon it. During this time, don’t be afraid to explore. Professors, PhD students, post docs, TAs, seniors, everyone, is willing to help you, and would be happy to see your passion.Anyway, I have rambled enough. Anything more, and it may inspire me to continue writing 40 points more, and steal the opportunity from the people you meet in person, to guide you around! :)Cheers, congratulations, and all the best!I hope this helps.

How does a new PhD holder in Mathematics from Princeton get a tenure track job in a Singaporean university?

If you are receiving a PhD in mathematics from Princeton and you are having problems getting a tenure track position in Singapore, something is wrong with the university in Singapore and I would look elsewhere. In other words, every school that is hiring in mathematics should be interested in you if you are interested in them.Perhaps the only caveat is that a department might not believe there is anyone of your caliber to work with, but that would still be strange, as there are great schools in Singapore. In any case, the reverence for Princeton math grads is justifiable. There is no place on the planet with a mathematics department more associated with prodigies than Princeton’s. For example, there are no classes in Princeton’s PhD program, only seminars where students present their own results. That’s because it is assumed that students already know the essentials necessary by the time they arrive and any new material can be picked up by self-study.Furthermore, students work directly with some of the greatest minds in the field, many of whom are housed at the Institute for Advanced Study and come from throughout the world.Nash once told me, for example, that he went to Von Neumann just to discuss a correction on one of the latter’s assumptions in a paper. He kept his distance, however, as he did not want Von Neumann’s and Morgenstern’s cooperative game theory framework to influence his own, non-cooperative work. That is how autonomous and independent it was and still is.If necessary, students can also flow freely between Harvard and MIT up the coast, without any formal applications or registrations—the latter schools are glad to have you. Thus, merely having you on the faculty would boost the reputation of a hiring school, since the graduates (who don’t go crazy, mind you) are sought after by everyone and since there are only about 3 or 4 each year anyway.I say all this, of course, as an outsider—I graduated from Princeton economics. Nonetheless, with the close interaction between our departments and faculty, the excellence of mathematics is widely understood and respected. Again, the small caveat to any Princeton (or other elite school) degree is that some places you desire to work may not hire you because they are intimidated.EDIT: I think it’s important that I clarify a few points given at least one commenter’s desire to distort what’s been said here. This is my opinion, based upon my experience and the data available. Unfortunately, Princeton math does not publish its placement results, but on the website states clearly: “Each year most of our Ph.D.s are successfully launched into academic positions at premier mathematical institutions; and, one or two go into industry.” Mathematics | Graduate SchoolSome may do post-docs, but that’s not what it says. Some may never graduate, but that’s not what it says. Some may join the circus—but that’s not what it says. Thus, until Princeton releases statistics, or until a Princeton math grad or Princeton professor chimes in, I can only compare what it says now to what I observed many years ago when I attended the Graduate school, took mathematics seminars and befriended math PhD students. Additionally, I teach at Cambridge, so I know roughly how Princeton is regarded from afar. Moreover, and for the benefit of some here that, by definition, know less about Princeton than I do given that experience, Princeton mathematics is Princeton mathematics. It is not Harvard nor MIT mathematics, nor is it even Princeton economics. Trying to answer a specific question about Princeton math when you did not go there simply by extrapolating your experience from elsewhere is, quite frankly, misleading, dishonest and a waste of everyone’s time. It also fails to even address the question.I have no idea about the placement of Harvard mathematicians or even Harvard economists, nor do I care. Therefore, my intellectual integrity tells me to shut my mouth (or my laptop) when questions arise about other eminent schools and programs with which I am completely unfamiliar. It would be wonderful if others followed a similar example.
