There are many ways in which you can maximize the financial advantage you have as a credit card holder. Some popular hacks include:• Use Your Card for Monthly Utility Bill Payments:Everyone has monthly bills to pay. Instead of paying them through cash or net banking, use your credit card. This regular spending each month will help in accumulating substantial reward points. You can also avail cashbacks of around 5% for some bills like telecom bills, if your card company has a tie up with your network operator.•Have Specialized Cards as per Your Need:If travel forms the major bulk of your expenses, go in for a travel credit card instead of a regular one, so that you can earn some extra air miles and some discounts in hotel stays. What is the best way to use a credit card?

Credit card = money in the bank, ~45 to 50 days of interest free credit and rewards!!I love using credit cards.Infact, the only thing I love more than using credit card is the money in my pocket (savings, investment etc…). You may say that I am addicted to leveraging this awesome piece of financial invention.Personally, I think that I might be the worst customer for my credit card company .They must be praying for the day I handover my money with them - as late fees, interests or some other form of punitive payment.I follow the following rules when using credit cards :I never had more than 1 credit card. ( I have 2 now - 1 for India and another for Germany now, good idea after 4 years here!!)I spend all possible daily expenses on my credit card:yesterday I spent 1.49 EUR at a supermarket via credit card,no amount is too small for me to spend via credit card.I NEVER opt for the following ;Freebies : just got an offer for PVR movie tickets this morning in my mail),Vouchers : Free Amazon/Flipkart vouchers, another offer I cleaned off my mail today morning,Balance transfers : never did this,Interest free installments : never did this,Any co-branded offer : Bank + BrandsI never even open their offer emails : Why you ask :the bank’s marketing department knows how many of their mails you opened, the bank knows which links did you click on from those emails, the bank knows what kind of offers you like to see,the bank knows if it suits them to send you a mail in the morning, afternoon or evening - based on your email open behaviour,Hence, I do not give them any info on my interests and behavior… they are just shooting in the dark hoping one of those offers sticks for me!!!!!I opt for card which is co-branded. Currently, I have a Lufthansa card:I earn rewards for all the spending,I can convert them to miles while planning my travel,While travelling to home (India), I use these miles to discount my fares,I earn miles for travelling with Lufthansa group flights, within or outside Europe,I earn additional points when spending on regular expenses like :Car rental from Hertz, Sixt or Europcar,Hotels stays during vacations,Subscribing to magazines that I regularly read,I DO NOT use my credit card to do the following :make impulsive purchases, buy fancy stuff, buy thinking I can convert this to interest free installments, buy online because of offer days - Prime day, Big billion day etc…as a debit card for ATM withdrawals - I do not even memorize the credit card passwords, never opt for higher spend limits - my credit card wants to increase my credit limit by 33% (on a very high base),never delay my paymentsI always pay in FULL before the due date, never use it to pay for spending in other currency,I have redeemed my award points for :Amazon or Flipkart voucher, giving me discount on the purchases,Discount on long distance flights,Discounts on the hotel and car rental spends, saving me cash,Bottomline : I stay within my means and spend on necessities. If you have a history of poor financial control and abusing free credit, cut up your credit card/s now!! It is a powerful tool which will take over your life and peace of mind, if abused.BONUS : another reason I always use credit card - if there is an issue with the transaction (bad products, wrong delivery, cheated by seller), it is easier to recover your money in credit cards, rather than debit cards or bank transfers.I write about my personal investments and other financial topics on the following blog. There are no ads or any other means for me to make money from your visit. So, feel free to visit, read, comment and share feedback.Investing BloggerInvestor & Quora writer (@financialblogger12) • Instagram photos and videos

What are some of the mistakes of Indians that are destroying their financial lives?

Here are my learnings purely based on experience:Salaried people using credit cards - Credit card has become a new status symbol to buy everything. In a so-called digitalised life, people don’t feel like carrying cash. Spend in cash and you’ll know the real value!Paying minimum amount due on credit cards - You should use credit card for huge amounts so that you can convert it into EMI. Paying monthly is an income to the bank and a loss to you. If possible, manage without a credit card.Taking life insurance - Don’t consider life insurance as your primary form of investment. Don’t take insurance to save tax. It’s required for the elderly. Not saving money - First Save then spend the rest. This is what I follow. You should save money for your health, children’s education and trips. Don’t take the loan to enjoy life’s perks.Spending bank’s money - If you want to buy an expensive phone, buy it with what you have. If a new phone costs 25 k, open a Recurring deposit of ₹1000 every month for two years. Buy a phone after your RD matures. You should spend your money.Home Loan - It may not be possible to save a lump sum to buy a house. If you take a loan, go for a shorter period and a higher EMI. It may be tough to manage your finances every month but you will own your house soon paying lesser interest to the bank.Spending on cinemas, Pepsi and junk - Firstly, it spoils your health. Secondly, you waste money. Assume, you spend at least ₹300 per month. What if you save it? You will have ₹3600 per year. You will have more if you open an RD account.Spending on marriages, functions and other money-eating ceremonies - You do because others do it? Such a waste. If you're wealthy, spend it. Else, spend what you have. Spend on what you love and not what others love. Not investing - Invest wisely. Whether it is a fixed deposit, PPF or SIP, invest when you are young. It doesn’t matter how much. But invest. Don’t rely just on your EPF.Life insurance is not your investment. Home loan is not your investment. Buying a car is not your investment. Investment is what gives you returns.Thank You for reading! Hope you find it useful.—Vinayak Jawalkar
