PDF Editor FAQ

What are some interesting psychological marketing tactics?

As a marketing professional, I’ll admit we use psychology A LOT!In fact, it’s pretty much my entire job. I’ve always told my colleagues, friends and family that marketing is essentially behavioral psychology. Here are some psychological principles, explanations of how they work, and some examples of how companies are using them to marketing to you and sell more product.Mere-exposure effectWhat it is: People tend to develop a liking and trust for things familiar. Affinity breeds liking. How it works: Simply put, the more you’re exposed to something, the more you deem it trustworthy. Repetition often produces familiarity because it rewires neural pathways, thereby manifesting in a proclivity and assurance for the familiar. The first exposure to a novel stimulus (i.e., your product) will simply bring its awareness to the consumer. Subsequent introductions turn awareness into attention, moving it up the trust scale. As it moves further up the scale, a lure compels you until finally the trust is established and a desire for the product is set.Examples in marketing:In a study on banner ads, college-aged students were asked to read an article online while banner ads were displayed. In short, the study concluded that the group exposed to the “test” banner rated the ad more favorably than other ads shown less frequently or not at all.Remember the last time you were on an ecommerce website, and three minutes later on Facebook an ad for that product appeared? It’s called retargeting, and it’s currently one of the most profitable advertising mediums. The mere-exposure effect is also illustrated in retail when we purchase the name brand item over the generic item simply because we’re familiar with it, even though nearly everything is the same besides the label.Radio ads are infamous for repeating their phone number 5+ times in hopes to leverage this principle (though some recent studies show this doesn’t work).Venture into any shopping mall at Christmas time and hear all the recognisable Christmas songs being played. Dr Victoria Williamson found that the mere-exposure effect can provide a positive memory when hearing a familiar song, and this is used by retailers as a way to boost sales and keep people shopping for longer.Games developers have long used familiarity to their advantage as well, and companies including Microgaming have found that basing their online slots on popular films like Jurassic Park is a sure way to attract players. This is supported by research – players of slot games are more likely to go for a ‘brand that has been tested on the wider public before it gets adapted into a slot’.AnchoringWhat it is: the common human tendency to rely too heavily on the first piece of information offered (the “anchor”) when making decisions. How it works: Once the anchor is set, decisions are then made by adjusting around the initial anchor number, regardless of the legitimacy of the actual anchor number. When we humans are uncertain about the correct answer, we take a guess using the most recent number we’ve heard as a staring point. Various studies have shown that even when subjects are informed about the irrelevancy of the anchor, it is still incredibly challenging to avoid factoring it into decisions.Examples in marketing:Black Friday. Companies take advantage by marketing their prices up, then give major discounts. For examples, a TV that regularly sells for $200 maybe prices at $375 gets marked 60% off. That brings the total to $175, which is only 12.5% off.Purchase Quantity Limits. We’ve all seen the sign before, there’s something on sale with a sign reading “Limit 12 Per Customer.” Most people conclude this limit is there to protect the store from being wiped out of the sale item of overly-eager bargain hunters.Multiple Unit Pricing. “On Sale, 4 Rolls of Bathroom Tissue for $2” vs. “On Sale, $0.50/roll.” In this particular experiment, the multiple unit pricing performed 40% better than the single unit pricing, even though the sale value is exactly the same. The brain uses the number four as the anchor.Authority HeuristicWhat it is: When people in positions of power (authority, expertise, influence, etc.) hold opinions on a certain subject, their opinions are regarded as trustworthy. How it works: Legitimate authorities have usually achieved their positions through superior experience, skill, wisdom or power. When we are unsure or unclear how to act, we often turn to authorities for guidance. This shortcut allows us to utilize the knowledge of the expert so we don’t have to do all the hard work (and often avoid responsibility). There are many different ways that consumers can identify authority. Titles, such as PhD, Governor or Olympic Gold Medalist, are often one of the hardest to attain by the authority figure, while they are often the easiest and quickest ways to identify authority for the consumer. Physical appearance, such as a white lab coat, briefcase or stethoscope, are inferred indicators of authority, but can easily be faked. Possessions, such as new sports car, penthouse suites or luxury watches, can have the same effect.Examples in marketing:Celebrity endorsements in advertising is the most prevalent use of this principle. This is so powerful that even when an actor playing a doctor on a TV show, dressed up in character and promoted a completely unrelated product (coffee), it outsold it’s previous sales records by double. One group of real estate agents was able to increase both the number of property appraisals and the number of subsequent contracts that they wrote by arranging for reception staff who answered customer inquiries to first mention their colleagues’ credentials and expertise.“9 out of 10 dentists use Crest.”PrimingWhat it is: Subtle suggestions to the subconscious mind can influence subsequent behavior. How it works: Priming is the means by which you activate a schema or mindset. For any general concept, you usually associate many other ideas with that concept. For example, your concept of mother would include the idea of love, along with many other ideas that you associate with your mother. Further, if that set of associations (or schemas) becomes activated, it can alter your perception and behavior because it would make the other associated concepts more prevalent in your mindWhy is it so powerful? It can be effective when it occurs entirely outside of our conscious awareness. Researchers in a study subliminally primed people with either the logo from Apple, a company with a very creative connotation, or the logo from IBM, a company with a very straightforward, noncreative connotation. The logos were only shown for thirteen milliseconds, so people weren’t consciously aware that they were exposed to those logos. However, people who were flashed with Apple’s logo exhibited higher creativity than did people who were exposed to IBM’s logoExamples in marketing:Just watch this to see the power of priming. It will blow your mind.Bandwagon EffectWhat it is: We tend to put our trust in something because we believe many other people have put their trust in it first. There is safety in numbers. The phrase “jumping on the bandwagon” comes from American politics in the late 1800s. Dan Rice, a well-known performer at the time (mainly circus acts), used his bandwagon and loud music as a ploy to gain attention for his political campaign. As his popularity picked up, more and more people saw his success and wanted a seat on the wagon. He didn’t win, but this effect was so strong that it became a standard part of campaigning. However, it was so widely used that soon a negative connotation was associated with that term, insinuating that people wanted to join the crowd in order to affiliate themselves with success. How it works: When we see a group of people we want to be a part of, social proof kicks in and the innate need to feel a sense of belonging drives us to conformity. We want to be part of the “in-crowd.” This effect is so strong that people often ignore or even override their beliefs to follow the crowd. This relies on assumptions, which we use as mental shortcuts. Our subconscious tells us, “If everyone else is buying this brand of toothpaste, then it must be good. I don’t have to go through the hassle of doing the work to find the best brand. I’ll just use the collective wisdom of the crowd.”Examples in marketing:Have you ever decided which YouTube video to watch based on how many views it has? Social media makes this trigger extremely effective, showing you exactly how social each piece of media is, helping you easily jump onto the bandwagon.Reviews and ratings: The crowd has the power to direct attention. A study by Harvard’s Michael Luca found that a 1-star increase on Yelp can boost a local business’s revenue by 5%-9%. In another recent study, two Berkeley economists found that a ½ star increase in ratings on Yelp improved its chances of having all of its seats sell out by 49%.There are entire business models built around this concept. Think daily deal sites, like Groupon, which was one of the fastest companies to reach a $1 billion valuation. Also look at crowdfunding sites, like Kickstarter, which has reportedly received more than $1.5 billion in pledges.Ingroup BiasWhat it is: The Ingroup Bias simply states that we like and trust people who we perceive as being similar to us.How it works: It’s human nature to seek out like-minded individuals, and because we view them to be like us, we automatically trust them more. Conversely, we tend to distrust and doubt those who are dissimilar to us. This creates an us-versus-them mentality. Standing against something can be just as powerful in marketing as standing for something.Examples in marketing:Goldstein, Cialdini, and Griskevicius (2008) conducted a study on Using Social Norms to Motivate Environmental Conservation in Hotels. In particular, they tried to determine what kind of message would get hotel guests to reuse their towels. They used three variations:Standard message: 'help save the environment'75% of hotel guests in this hotel reuse their towels75% of hotel guests in this room reuse their towelsMessages that related to the participant - other guests reuses towels - increased participants reusing them by 10-15%.Let’s look at the Harley Davidson brand. Harley riders have an instant extreme affinity for other Harley riders. Harley riders are fanatical- so fanatical, it almost feels like a cult! They’re made up of a very specific type of person, and they identify with each other, saying, “People like us ride Harleys.” Do you think a newbie who wants to be known as a rider goes out and buys a Honda or a Harley?Huckberry is a great example of this. Its target audience is the urban outdoorsman- someone who lives in the city but would like to think of themselves as an outdoorsman. However, the truth is they’re too busy working at Google or Facebook and haven’t been camping in a while. By buying from Huckberry, they are communicating, “I’m the type of people who camps.”Scarcity HeuristicWhat it is: As items become more limited and difficult to acquire, the perceived value of those items increase. This shortcut relies on a person’s perception of how immediately accessible or obtainable something is.How it works: This trigger goes hand-in-hand with our previous trust factor. When there are limited resources, a trigger goes off in our minds and those resources suddenly become more attractive. Your subconscious tells you, “Those must be in high demand. I don’t want to lose out!” In his bestselling book, Influence, Robert Cialdini explains, “The tendency to be more sensitive to possible losses than to possible gains is one of the best-supported findings in social science.”Examples:Have you ever been standing in the isle of the store looking at the dizzying array of items – say cold or allergy medicine – when you notice there’s only one box left of Allegra, but a dozen boxes left of all the other options? Which one did you buy?We don’t need to look far for examples of scarcity as a business model. Antique stores and collectible items are doing extremely well.Twinkiemania was an extreme example of what people do in the face of scarcity. The Downfall Of Hostess Led people to auction Twinkies for absurd prices on eBay.Scarcity works with not only quantity but also time. QVC has decided to implement a limit on both time and quantity, which has worked quite well for them. Retail stores leverage the time limitation whenever they can with holidays sales, anniversaries and pretty much any other excuse they can think of to have a sale.Anti-Inference BiasWhat it is: seeing is believing. How it works: People often question the validity of a claim based on facts, figures and theory, but when empirical evidence is introduced, they are converted to believers. The more dramatic the demonstration, the more awe is inspired, the more people will flock to buy the product. Hearing something hundreds of times is not nearly as powerful as seeing it once.Examples:Have you ever been flipping through the TV channels late at night, only to stop on an infomercial and see kitchen knives cutting through a plank of wood, a piece of rock and a hammer (yes, a hammer!)? Did you immediately want a set? Be honest- did you buy a set? We’ve all seen the Tempurpedic mattress demonstration where someone is jumping on the bed with of a full glass of wine of staying upright. Anyone who has been woken up by a restless partner in bed is in awe, saying to themselves, “If someone jumping on a bed doesn’t disturb a full wine glass, surely I won’t be disturbed when my partner rolls around at night.”The entire infomercial business lives on this principle. The Psychology of Color in marketingUnpredictable/Variable Rewards:What it is: In a traditional reward model, someone takes an action and they get rewarded. In the variable reward, it’s different. It’s called “variable” because you don’t reward the action every time. In other words, the reward unpredictable. How it works: In advertising, marketers reinforce a behavior by linking to the promise of reward to their product. “Use our product and members of the opposite gender will be immediately attracted to you.” Products in nearly every category has used this, from cars and hamburgers to clothes and soap.BF Skinner showed this by rewarding a mouse with food in two different ways:rewarding every 5th time it pressed a bar (fixed ratio scheduled)rewarding randomly (variable reinforcement). He found that the second option was more long-lasting and required less reinforcement (less food)!Examples in marketing:Imagine if a restaurant didn't tell us when they're going to give us a free drink. We'd probably be going back as much as we could to maximize our chances of getting that free drink! Cereal brands and Willy Wonka's chocolate factory take advantage of variable reinforcement by putting golden tickets in some of their cereal boxes or candy bars, spurring us to want to buy more for a shot to win!You know those stamp cards that some restaurants and coffee shops give you that allow you to get a free drink on the 10th time you come? Actually, although those cards can be effective, they're not the most effective way of incentivizing customers to come back. Instead of having a fixed ratio reinforcement schedule, where customers get rewarded every 10th time they come, you should have variable reinforcement, where customers get rewarded randomly.Slot machines are the best example. The promise for the huge reward coupled with the variability keeps you coming back.ReciprocityWhat it is: If someone does something for you, you naturally will want to do something for them. How it works: People are obliged to give back to others the form of a behavior, gift, or service that they have received first. This is deeply rooted in our psychology and served as a survival mechanism when we were hunting and living in caves. However, we still see the effects today. If you've ever gotten a mint with your bill at a restaurant, you've been the victim of reciprocity.Studies have even show that the reciprocity principle can generate a return in kind to your requests even if your initial gift is not asked for. Or when the person you're giving a gift to doesn't like you. Or when the gift obviously results in an unfair or uneven exchange.Examples in marketing:In your marketing, there are a lot of ways to take advantage of reciprocity. You don’t have to be rolling in dough to give something away; it can be anything from a branded sweatshirt to an exclusive ebook, to a free desktop background, to your expertise on a difficult subject matter. Even something as simple as a hand-written note can go a long way in establishing reciprocity.According to a study by Cialdini, when servers bring a check to their patrons without a mint, the diners will tip according to their perceptions of the service given. With one mint, the tip jumps up 3.3%. Two mints? The tip jumps "through the roof" to roughly 20%.When buying a car (or any other high ticket item), the salesman will play good cop/bad cop where he is the good cop, and his boss is the bad cop (who you often never meet, see, interact with, etc.). He says he’ll go to bat for you with his boss – he comes back and says he got another $500 knocked off the price and a free car wash. You feel obligated to say yes because of this principle.Free samples at Costco… nuff’ said.

How does one operate a submarine? Is there a steering wheel?

“How does one operate a submarine? Is there a steering wheel?”Question from a junior in an American high school, so I’ll answer at that level of experience (none). But first, the use of the word “one” is correct (in the US), but can sound pretentious, if you’re not careful. I’m sure you didn’t mean can one person, alone, operate a submarine, so I’ll leave it at that.Simple answer: Yes, there’s a “steering wheel.” Using maritime terminology, it’s called a “helm” (just like in Star Trek). It started back in the days of sail.Classic tall-ship helm.WWII-era submarine helm. Some new classes of submarine have a computer control, where the systems are controlled with a computer joystick.US Virginia-class submarine ship controls. Now, the technical answer. This answer is restricted to full-size military submarines. We’ll start with the basics, and build from there.Every ship, submarine, and aircraft has a rudder in the back (stern). Moving it left and right shoves the stern left and right, changing the ship’s direction. On the first ships, in the last millennium, it was a fixed oar, called a steer-board (starboard). Because most men are right-handed, the board was on the right side (which is why the right side of a ship is the starboard side). When rudders were put on the centerline, they were controlled with a lever, called the till.Eventually, huge rudders were too heavy, so a helm wheel was developed, which used pulleys and ropes to amplify a man’s strength. When the industrial age began, ropes and pulleys were replaced with pumps, cylinders and hydraulic oil.The first submarines had an independent hydraulic system for the rudder, with a hydraulic pump feeding the helm control valve, which would port pressurized hydraulic fluid to either side of a huge hydraulic ram, which moved the rudder.1) Main steering wheel; 2) change valve; 3) electric motor, 15-horsepower, speed 440 revolutions per minute; 4) motor-driven Waterbury A-end pump; 5) telemotor; 6) control cylinder; 7) control cylinder plunger; 8) bell-crank shaft on control cylinder; 9) steering system main manifold; 10) port ram; 11) starboard ram; 12) inboard connecting rods; 13) emergency steering wheel; 14) spur gears; 15) emergency control valve shaft; 16) main supply manifold, main hydraulic system; 17) main return manifold, main hydraulic system; 18) line to main supply tank; 19) vent and replenishing line to main supply tank; 20) gage; 21) relief valve (48 pounds); 22) vent and replenishing line to stern plane Waterbury A-end pump.Submarine Hydraulic Systems - Chapter 4There were three methods of operating the helm, POWER, EMERGENCY, and HAND. In POWER mode, the local hydraulic pump provides hydraulic pressure. In EMERGENCY, the ship’s main hydraulic system provides the pressure. In HAND mode, the helm steering wheel is turned, acting as a manual pump. All of the piping for rudder control went from the helm wheel in the Control Room to the hydraulic ram in the After Torpedo Room. It was all mechanical. Here’s a link to a libray of the WWII submarine qualification books, that all submariners had to read and learn. The Fleet Type Submarine OnlineAfter WWII, an electrical servo system was developed. When the helm wheel is turned, an electrical signal is sent to a control valve. The control valve controls the fluid going the rudder ram.If the electrical system fails, the rudder can be put in emergency mode, where a separate control valve is operated using a lever in the console between the two operators. It’s all mechanical. Then there’s the manual mode, in the Engine Room. A crewman operates the control valve. manual. If there’s no hydraulic pressure, a hand-pump can be used. If none of that works, a team of people can use ropes and pulleys to physically move the rudder. To give you an idea of the “qualification” difficulty for submariners, the post-WWII info I wrote was off the top of my head, from my initial submarine qualifications aboard USS Patrick Henry (SSBN-599) in 1980. Part of the process was to learn a basic piping diagram and draw it on demand, AND physically show the locations of all of the emergency valves and the ability to operate them. When transferring to other classes of boats, I was required to learn the differences. In the new Virginia-class submarine, the electrical controls have been replaced with digital electronic controls, operated by the computer system, controlled by the pilot with his joystick. I don’t know the system controls or backup methods, it’s after my time in the Navy. The question was about “operation” so there’s a LOT more than just steering th boat around. Unlike ships, submarines operate in three dimensions and also need to tilt up and down, just like an airplane. To do this, they have additional horizontal control surfaces at the stern and either at the bow, or on the fairwater (called a “conning tower” by uninformed civilians).Classic diesel submarine stern, showing the port-side rudder, stern plane and screw.Classic diesel boat bow, showing port-side bow plane and two torpedo tubes (one with no inner out outer doors, one with the outer door shut).Stern of USS Halibut (SSGN-587) in 1959, showing opper and lower rudders, stern planes, screws, and after torpedo tubes.Nuclear submarine starboard bow plane.Fairwater planes.Fairwater planes tilted vertically to enable the submarine to surface through polar ice.How do they work? Much like on an airplane. The stern planes are used to control the sub’s angle (tilt or pitch). The bow planes (or sail planes) are used to alter the sub’s depth. Each control surface has it’s own operating system. The controls are in the Control Room (aren’t submariners original? LOL)WWII submarine stern and bow planes controls. Each one had its own operator. The systems were nearly identical to the rudder control I detailed earlier.Modern US submarine ship control area. The two young men are the stern-planesman (left) and helmsman/bow-planesman (right). They are usually the most junior members of the crew, E-1 (Seaman Recruit) through E-4 (Petty Officer Third Class). The sternplanesman’s ONLY job is to control the boat’s trim angle (pitch) up and down, as ordered by the Diving Officer Of the Watch (DOOW). He does it by pushing his wheel forward and back, to control th stern planes. The Helmsman’s job is to control the boat’s course and speed, as ordered by the Officer Of the Deck (OOD). Course is controlled by turning the wheel left and right, to control the rudder. Speed is controlled by turning the control know on the Engine Order Telegraph.A submarine EOT. The black knob controls the ordered pointer. The engine order is sent to an EOT in the Maneuvering Room in the Engine Room, where the engineers control the reactor and propulsion plant. They acknowledge the order by moving the answer pointer to match the order. Engine speed is not ordered by engine RPM or ship speed (Follow-up RPM and speed orders are received orally via MC (PA system) announcements.) Those orders are Ahead 1/3, 2/3, Standard, Full. and Flank, and Back 1/3, 2/3, Full, and Emergency. The bow planseman’s job is to control the boat’s depth, as ordered by the DOOW. He does that by moving his wheel forward and back, to control the angle of the bow planes. The third junior member of the Control Party is the Messenger, who is the general gofer, ordered b the OOD and the Chief Of the Watch (COW). He rotates with the other two to the planesman and helmsan. When needed, he is a phone-talker, wearing sound-powered-phones on a ship-wide circuit. The young man standing in the back is the Messenger.Sound-powered phones. The microphone is on the bottom. When spoken into, it generates its own electrical signal to all of the other headsets on the circuit. It requires no batteries or external power sources (ideal for battle).OK, back to the Control Party (OH! I forgot! “Party” is a Navy term for a team of people doing something. Things like Stores Loading Party, Fire Control Party, Line Handling Party, etc..)In the picture, the man sitting on a stool behind the Helm and Planesmen is the Diving Officer Of the Watch. He is responsible to the OOD for maintaining ordered ship’s depth and trim angle, ordering planes movement to the planesmen, and ship’s trim/buoyancy to the Chief Of the Watch (COW). In this function, he needs to balance the use of planes and amount of water pumped into and out of the sub. They are all interactive. This is an officer or senior enlisted (E-7 to E-9 Chief Petty Officer, Senior Chief or Master Chief). The last man in the picture (bald head, no face) is the COW. He has multiple functions and receives orders from the DOOW and OOD. Under DOOW orders, he operates the Ballast Control Panel to control the boat’s trim and buoyancy, by moving water (measured by thousands of pounds) around the boat through the trim tanks. When ordered to hover, he operates the hovering system. Under orders from the OOD, he raises/lowers masts and antenna, operates Main Ballast Tank flooding and blowing (including the Emergency Blow “Chicken Switches”), monitors the status of all hull penetrations (hatches, induction valve, torpedo tubes, missile tubes, etc.), operates major ship alarms (General, Collision, Diving, Missile Emergency), and makes general announcements over the 1MC ship-wide PA system (Battlestations, Collision, Flooding, Diving, Missile Emergency, “Prepare tto Snorkel,” “Ventilate,” Rig Ship For Reduced Electrical Power,” etc., etc..), sends the Messenger to wake the relief crew or make a coffee run, ship-wide non-nuclear watch management, and control over the qualification delinquents (a non-qualified crewman who is behind on his expected qualification progress musters with the COW for two hours of extra study). The leader of the Ship Control Party, not shown in the picture is the Officer Of the Deck, who is directly responsible to the Captain for all ships’ operations.Submarine OOD, looking through a periscope. The Ship Control Panel is behind him. You can see the Helmsman’s hand on the rudder. He issues all orders to the crew, through the senior watch station officers and crew (Diving Officer Of the Watch, Engineering Officer Of the Watch, Chief Of the Watch, and Helmsman). He has two functions (and names), Deck and Conn. The OOD cannot delegate the Deck. That’s the responsibility for the ship. Conn (as in Conning Officer) gives verbal ship’s movement orders to the Helmsman (ship’s course), Divve (ship’s depth) and Maneuvering Room (ship’s speed). The OOD can give (delegate) the Conn to as assistant, the Junior Officer Of the Deck (JOOD). When he does, the JOOD has to make a loud announcement of that fact, so everybody knows who is giving the orders, and it can be recorded in the ship’s log book. (“This is Ensign Smith, I have the Conn, Lieutenant Jones retains the deck.” That announcement is acknowledged by the Helmsman, so the OOD and JOOD know that the Helmsman know’s who is giving conning orders (Ensign Smith has the Conn, Lieutenant Jones retains the deck, Helm, aye.” The OOD can countermand the JOOD’s orders at any time. If he does, the Helm will immediately announce (Lieutenant Smith has the Conn!” and obey the OOD’s orders. There are two people who can countermand an OOD’s orders. The Captain and XO (Executive Officer — 2nd in command). If that happens, the Helm will immediately announce “Captain Has the Conn!” and obey his orders.I saw that happen, once. I was in Sonar, with the door open. The Captain came running by, going to the Control Room. I heard the Captain “Full Rise Stern Planes! Full Rise Bow Planes!” Yep, the entire Control Party was in the shits. The OOD, DOOW, COW, Helm and Planes had collectively screwed up, big time! Now, for the controls. Look at the picture, there are a whole slew of knobs, switches, controls, meters, lights, and indicators. Everybody must know how to operate them.Start with the Helm. Notice the rudder wheel is turned slightly to the left. He’s putting a few degrees of rudder there, probably to control the boat’s drift off of ordered course. Now look all the way up, to the right. there’s a rectangular panel with several meters and indicators. The one in the middle at the top is the Rudder-Angle Indicator. Zero is in the middle. The pointer is a couple degrees left of zero, showing that the Helm is correcting course. The round indicator below that is thre Gyro Repeater (similar to a compass) showing what own ship’s course is. The indicators to the left and right are for the stern (left) and bow (right) planes. The bow planes are centered, so the boat is probably at ordered depth. The stern planes indicate a couple of degrees down, indicating the boat’s angle is probably a little bit up. Look at the vertical row of red LEDs. Sure enough, there’s about a 2-degree up-bubble, and the stern planseman is correcting it.Scanning down the picture, the four red screens are digital representations of all of the information each mechanical indicator shows. Side-note, look to the right of the Helm’s right panel. There are two indicators. “TB-16 STOWED” is lit of the TB-16 Towed Sonar Array is stowed in it’s tube. “FWA STOWED” is if the VLF Floating Wire Antenna is stowed. That’s important information, because if one or both are streamed, ship’s maneuvers are limited a little, to prevent causing damage or loosing one. For example, if you go fast and make a sudden turn, you could drag a towed array into the boat’s screw (CHOP CHOP CHOP!).To the left of the stern-planesman’s panels is the right edge of the BCP. See the four colored squares? Those are the operating switches for the four Ship’s Alarms. Diving (green), Collision (red), General (yellow) and Missile Emergency (pink). To the left of those are the controls for ballast, missiles, etc. Looking at the caption under the picture, I said it was for an SSN. How did I know? Look to the left, at the top. There is a row of red (or dim) missile-like indicators. There are twelve. Older SSNs have 12 Vertical Launch System (VLS) missile tubes. SSBN’s have a similar display, but they have 24 tubes. The COW monitors what happens to those missile tubes.Below that are the panels used to move water. For example, the DOOW might order “Chief Of the Watch, pump five thousand pounds from forward trim to after trim.” The COW will select the switches to open the valve to connect the Forward Trim Tank to the trim system suction line, the After Trim Tank to the trim system discharge line, start the Trim Pump, and adjust its speed to the appropriate level. He will watch the quantity indicator to see how much water is being pumped, and watch the Forward and after Trim Tank level indicators to ensure that one tank’s level is going down, and the other tank’s level is going up. If those three don’t match, what’s expected, either the COW messed up (likely) or there’s a problem in the system (unlikely). If, for example, the COW mistakenly selected water to go to an auxiliary tank by mistake, and the tank was full, then all the excess water would spill out of the tank’s vent, into the bilge, making the Auxiliaryman Of the Watch very upset (he has a mess to clean up, and needs to pump bilges soon). That’s how the front half of a submarine is operated. There are other forward watch-standers, of course. For example, also in the Control Room is the Quartermaster Of the Watch (QMOW), who maintains the navigational chart and makes Ship Log entries and the Fire Control Technician Of the Watch (FTOW) who tracks all contacts (ships), prepares Fire Solutions (potential weapon orders), and controls tactical weapons (torpedoes and cruise missiles). There’s an Auxiliary Of the Watch (operates miscellaneous forward engineering equipment, like the Emergency Generator, and makes continuous tours of the forward half of the boat, looking for problems (like leaks and flooding), the Sonar team (in Sonar), the Radio team, (in Radio) the Navigation (inertial navigation) Team (in the Nav Center), the Torpedoman Of the Watch (in the Torpedo Room) and, if an SSBN, the Missile Team (in the Missile Control Center). And then, there’s Engineering. These are the guys who push us through the water and keep us alive (Literally. They maintain the atmosphere and make fresh water. Without oxygen and water, everybody dies). The control of all of this is in the Maneuvering Room, a small place with three watchstanders. This place is so important, that the entrance has a chain across it, and you have to request permission to enter (“Request Permission to Enter Maneuvering!” “Permission Granted!”)Engineering plant controls. The three panels, left-to-right, are for the Steam Plant (making and using steam), Electrical Plant (making and routing electricity) and Reactor Plant (using neutrons to make heat and boil water). The two silver wheels are the main engine throttles (ahead and astern). When the Helmsman make and engine order on the Engine Order Telegraph, this is the one who acknowledges it, and then turns the throttle wheel enough to attain the required screw RPM. He watches meters to ensure the steam generators are operating properly. The controls for the Electrical Plant, route electricity to the two electrical busses, to/from the DC motor-generators, to from the ship’s battery, and from the Emergency Diesel Generator. The Reactor Plant controls keep everything adjusted to keep the reactor operating safely.More details than that are classified, and I’m not qualified to answer them, anyway. I’m not a nuke. They go to two years of school, just to know enough to control the thing. That’s two years of over 60 hours per week of classroom and lab training. That would be like doing a four-year degree in 18 months. In addition to the three operators, there’s an officer supervisor, called the Engineering Officer Of the Watch (EOOW). He’s in charge of everything Engineering, reporting to, and receiving orders from, the OOD. Orders are oral using the Ship Control MC (PA).There are several other watchstanders in the Engine Room, including the Engine Room Supervisor (A CPO) and operators of several vital pieces of equipment, such as the Hydraulic Plant, High Pressure Air Compressors, and the Fresh Water Evaporator. In the Auxiliary Machinery Room, the vital equipment includes the Oxygen Generator(s) (SSBN’s have two), which make oxygen out of distilled water, CO2 Scrubbers, which remove CO2 from the air, and CO/H2 Burners, which remove carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and hydrocarbons from the air.Oxygen Generator.CO2 Scrubber.CO/H2 Burner.Somebody said it takes a team to operate a submarine. Not counting cooks, it takes about 35-40 people, per shift, to do it on an SSN. Even more, for an SSBN with ballistic missiles. And that’s not just a bunch of people with individual skills, like in the civilian world. In a factory, for example, you have different people doing different jobs. Nobody knows, or cares, what the other people do.Not only do we know what everybody else does, but we also cross-train, so if something happens, somebody else can do the job and, in an emergency, we can help to fight the casualty. For example, if I’m in the Engine Room and there’s a steam leak, perhaps, if somebody yells at me to shut the Main Steam Stop valves, I can run and do it, even though I’m NOT an engineering guy.If there’s a nuke (engineering guy) standing around, and somebody yells at him to manually override the valve to raise the snorkel mast, he can run and DO it, even though hes not an A-ganger.If there’s a cook in the Missile Compartment and he hears the announcement “Rig Ship to Ventilate” and the watchstander needs help, he can take the checklist and operate the correct valves and dampers. There’s nothing like that in the civilian world, or even in the rest of the Navy, with the possible exception of Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS). I almost qualified for that, the first year it was available, but was transferred to the submarine fleet before I finished. The powers-that-be were mad at me for volunteering for subs, and wouldn’t let me finish. I made it as far as Inport Repair Locker Leader, as an STG3. All that was left was Sonar Supervisor. If you’re really interested in the theory behind everything, read the books available at the San Francisco Maritime National Park Association web site.
