PDF Editor FAQ

What does a homeless individual need the most?

More than anything homeless people need housing obviously, but on a personal level, they need people to look them in the eye and say, “Hi, I’m ______. I’d like to know your story.” They need people to listen, to respect them, to hear what they have to say.The worst thing I found about being homeless was how people treat you like a thief or lowlife. I now invite homeless people to have lunch with me and tell me their story. I don’t rush to fix things, or feel compelled to give them money.I do learn their name and their story and say hello to them afterwards when I see them. Most homeless people were regular people at one time. They need to know there’s still hope. Other than that the things they need most (I have a PDF book I give away at this time of year, but can’t attach it…) but:Gift cardsHaircutsCoatsSocks, socks, socksLong-sleeved t-shirtsShoes0-degree sleeping bags and a closed cell foam sleeping padRaingearBackpackUnderwearToilet paperRazors and shaving creamBus passCard for their cell phoneCell phones - it’s insanely difficult to get an Obama phoneMoney - $10 or $20Meal cards to Subway, McDonalds or Burger King - $10A hotel room for a night or moreGloves - warm ones like ski glovesBlanket or tarpFlashlight - preferably one embedded in baseball cap (Lowes has them)BatteriesSnacks - those slim jim meat snacks are VERY popular

How far have you gone to save a little money?

When I was pursuing Masters in US. I lived on a food budget of 60$ maximum per month. I could only go to Indian grocery store only once every 3 weeks. I wouldn’t spend more than 30$ there. However, I would buy variety of veggies that won’t get spoiled so quickly.I would regularly cook various kinds of beans as they are cheap. I could only shop from Walmart once a month. I found hacks on making food stay longer in fridge.I stopped eating rice. I mostly ate handmade chapatis. Wheat flour bag lasts longer than rice. I would get just one Greek yogurt per month and eat only spoon of it everyday.I ate a lot of eggs as they were cheap. I would cook Indian food and never eat out. If I am eating out, it’s because somebody else is paying for it. I love pizza but don’t have a car and I don’t want to pay 12–14$ including delivery charges for one time meal. I would wait for events in college where there was free pizza to fulfill my cravings.I would always go to events where there was free food. I would cook every meal of my day by meal prepping like I would make a curry that would last me 2 days. But, every morning I would make the whole day’s food and put in containers. I would always have food and don’t crave to eat out.I lived with many roommates and there was only 1 fridge for storage. I was maintaining a diet too.So, I would only buy veggies, beans, fruits (bananas) and some other variety, oats. I stopped eating non-veg as it was expensive. I would get to eat chicken whenever I would visit my relatives house. I would travel in train/bus and commute 2.5 hours to save money on cab when I had to visit my relatives house. In India, when I was doing undergraduate degree, I would change 3 buses so that I don’t have to pay for autos. This whole commute would take me 2 hours to go to college. I had a bus pass and would save the money given for auto.If I want to read a book and it’s expensive. I just get a pdf version for free and read it. Not paying 15$ for a ebook.I have been a miser or whatever people want to call me. Those situations helped me pay my bills and save some money which was needed.
