If you were born in 1918 in the city of Uzhorod/Ungvár, by your early seventies you have had the chance to be the citizen of no less, than five different countries in your lifetime, without ever having to move.Uzhorod/Ungvár is a city situated by the Uzh river, today in the Western part of Ukraine. It is the administrative center of Zakarpattia Oblast (region), as well as the administrative center of the surrounding Uzhhorod Raion (district) within the oblast.Uzhorod todayHow was living in five different countries without ever moving possible? Well…It’s 1918. You’re born . The city belongs to the Austro-Hungarian Empire (Uzhorod is in the center of the red circle).It’s 1920. You’re two years old, your mom is very proud of you, as recently you’ve learned how to walk and even run without any difficulties. The Austro-Hungarian Empire lost World War I, and after the Treaty of Trianon 1920, Uzhhorod became part of the eastern half of Czechoslovakia.It’s 1938. You’re 20 years old, you’ve just recently married the love of your life. The influence of Hitler and Nazi Germany in Europe is quite strong now. The so called First Vienna Award - Wikipedia “awarded” certain territories of Czechoslovakia to the Kingdom of Hungary.It’s 1945. You’re 27 years old and now have a couple of kids; Hungary recently lost WW2. You don’t know this yet, but you have years of forced labor in a GULAG/GUPVI camp ahead of you, as well as nearly five decades of living in the Soviet Union (or more precisely the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic).(Uzhorod is in the center of the yellow circle).It’s 1991. You’re 73 years old and have several grandchildren. The Soviet Union fell apart, you don’t fully grasp how and why, all you get is that on 24 August 1991 the Ukrainian parliament adopts the Act of Independence. You’re now a proud citizen of the independent Ukraine.I hope you find this brief glimpse into the history of Uzhorod interesting. To me, it’s so absurd that it almost sounds fictional and it clearly shows how crazy and turbulent the 20th century was in Central and Eastern Europe.

Fars, which is literally “Persia” in the proper sense (linguistic shift of P to F), never was the administrative center of the Iranian plateau.The three dynasties mostly associated with Iran in antiquity — the Achaemenids, Arsacids/Parthians, and Sassanids, were all based in Mesopotamia, their capital in Babylon, later named Ctesiphon, or as the locals called it, the Mahoze (“the cities” - because it consisted of a dozen ethnically distinct, often self governing “cities” separate from each other).While the two dynasties which originally hailed from Fars did maintain secondary capitals or “royal residences” there, like Persepolis, these were not actually their centres of strength or administration. Similarly, the Arsacids kept a summer capital in their native Khorasan, the less known Hecatompylus (“Hundred-Gated (City)”), but they too were definitely based in Mesopotamia.This means all three were based in a region speaking a language not of the dynasty, the Semitic Aramaic language of the Fertile Crescent. This was also the official language of the Achaemenids, though the Arsacids shifted to Greek and the Sassanids to Persian (now called Pahlavi or ‘Parthian’ because it used a Parthian adaptation of Aramaic script). All these dynasties would have been military minorities in the vast majority of their empires. Similarly, the Hellenistic period was characterized by growing Greek urban communities in Mesopotamia and throughout the plateau, which the ruling kings used as a counterweight to the Iranian aristocracy.
