What training does the Special Protection Group get?

To understand the training profile of the Special Protection Group it would be necessary to know the Role and Employment of the special unit. [1] [2]RoleThe Special Protection Group (SPG) was raised in 1985 with the intention to provide proximate security cover to the Prime Minister, former Prime Ministers and their immediate family members.SelectionSPG officers are ingrained in high leadership qualities, professionalism, knowledge of proximate security and inculcate the culture of leading from the front. SPG has strived to achieve this by adopting innovative methods not only in its own working, but also in the overall security arrangements in collaboration with the IB and State/ UT police forces. SPG officers are trained to offer, if necessary, the supreme sacrifice to ensure that the sacred task assigned to the organization by the Government is fulfilled at all costs.SPG personnel are recruited from various armed units such as the Indian Police Service, Central Reserve Police Force, Central Industrial Security Force, Border Security Force & Sashastra Seema Bal. After finishing their tenure as an SPG personnel, they go back to joining their respective units. The exhaustive procedure involves an interview with the Inspector General of Police, two deputy IGs and two assistant IGs, followed by a physical test, a written test and a psychological assessment.[3]Apart from being physically fit and mentally sharp, SPG recruits need to be younger than 35 years and have an unblemished service record.[4]MottoSPG works on the motto of "Zero Error" and "Culture of Excellence".“The relation between a personal security officer and the protectee is akin to that of a mother and a child. In times of danger, the mother will sacrifice herself to save the child, and that is the ethic we looked for.” Vijay Raman, former Special Director-General of CRPF and a member of the founding SPG team.[5]Training PhilosophyThe training curriculum and work atmosphere in SPG encourages every member to recognize his/ her individual capabilities so as to deliver optimum results and contribute meaningfully to bring glory to this elite organization. In view of the prevailing security environment in the country and the threats emanating from the trans-national terrorism, the force has to constantly strive towards technological modernization and skill up gradation.Training ImpartedIn the first phase of their training, which goes on for 3 months, they undergo a rigorous armed and unarmed combat training. An intense training of physical efficiency, marksmanship, anti-sabotage checks and communication further pushes their limits. Those who fail to make the grade in training are transferred to the next batch. If they still fail to clear it, then they are returned to the parent unit.[6]Close protection team probables are sent back for a further training period of three months. Then they are assigned as understudies before they are elevated to the main entourage.[7]Only the best make it through and are further trained for three months before they're inducted into the squad that stays with the PM within an arm's length.“Every month they (we) are supposed to report for five training sessions. It’s non-negotiable”.[8]There are essentially two types of Roles:Close Protection TeamQuick Reaction TeamRole Based TrainingAdvance Security Liaison (ASL) (sanitising a venue before the visit of the VIP).Clear cut task of offence and defence divided between themselves in case of an attack or sabotage against the VIP.[9]A cool and calm demeanour, physical fitness, ability to think on your feet and being a sharp shot are some of the qualities required to be a part of the PM’s close protection team. Physically, it is a taxing job. A man should be able to act in a split second; the capacity to think and react quickly is of the essence here. You need to know whether people are euphoric or antagonistic at the visit of the Prime Minister. [10]The men are also trained to be polite and unobtrusive. There are detailed operational procedures in place specifying everything from how many men will accompany the PM when he alights from a car, to how many will be with him when on a dais. The SPG also maintains a strict check on who is allowed to meet the Prime Minister and who is not. The SPG has complete authority to pick up the phone and ask the Prime Minister directly if he wants to meet the visitor.[11]SPG members, including drivers, are rotated regularly. And if an SPG member goes for leave longer than a certain number of days, it is not unusual for the local police to carry out discreet enquiries as to his whereabouts.[12]An SPG tenure lasts for six years but extensions are not uncommon even though Subramanian believes in frequent rotation, including a fixed two-year tenure for the director.[13]This was the public profile as available in media. From my personal experience having served in the National Security Guard with a VIP Security Unit of its own that protects all VIPs except the Prime Ministers and their Family, the real training would be as under:Personal Combat Training Mission ObjectivesPhysical fitness standards desired of a Police Commando to include strength, agility, endurance and quick reflex.Mental robustness to withstand stress and alertness for 24*7 deployment despite the mandatory rotation of duties.Unarmed Combat Skills of Krav Maga (Israel Defence Forces) pattern..Close Quarter Combat shooting skills in all possible firing positions and threat situations by day, poor visibility and night.Sniper shooting skills.Combat Evasive Driving manoeuvres.Quick First Aid (Emergency Trauma Care/Resuscitation) skills.Explosive detection methods and drills.Bomb/Explosive disposal methods and drills.VIP Cover procedures and drills.Communication protocol and security.Personal Psychological Training Mission ObjectivesCrowd scan for quick threat perception.Quick reflex training.Innovative/Out of box thinking.De-stressing techniques.Mental alertness.VIP psychological behaviour pattern study, adjustment and adaptation of protection techniques.Terrorist psychological studies and counter measures.Role TrainingArea Sanitisation drill to include Explosive detection and Render safe procedures.Area cover procedures and drills to include Access control and Area domination.Sniper deployment drills.Quick Reaction Team procedures and drills.VIP Close Protection protocol, procedures and drills.Threat response by Defensive and Offensive methods. These are just a few of the things they do. Most of the things are evolved on the job and improved continuously.Footnotes[1] SPG, Govt. of India[2] Director's Message[3] Here’s What You Should Know About The SPG, The Men In Black Who Risk Their Lives To Keep Our PM Safe[4] The guardians of 7, Race Course Road[5] Here’s What You Should Know About The SPG, The Men In Black Who Risk Their Lives To Keep Our PM Safe[6] The guardians of 7, Race Course Road[7] The guardians of 7, Race Course Road[8] The guardians of 7, Race Course Road[9] NSG upgrades security cover of its VIPs; matches SPG drills[10] The guardians of 7, Race Course Road[11] The guardians of 7, Race Course Road[12] The guardians of 7, Race Course Road[13] The guardians of 7, Race Course Road

What should I learn to stay employed as a System administrator in the next 5-10 years?

Sorry this is a bit of a terse response but the only real answer I have is:Learn how to do meaningful research. It’s the same thinking as,”Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he’ll never go hungry.” If you learn how to research the different trends in IT and computing, then you should be able to identify the needed skills and get ahead of the game. Then, the new skills you’ve been working on should be ready by the time they are heavily needed in the industry. If you wanted some specific advice:OS AdministrationWindows and LinuxNetwork AdministrationBasics and advance L1, L2 & L3VirtualizationVMware, Hyper-V, KVM & ContainersCloud OfferingsAWS, Rack Space, etc.ScriptingBash, PowerShell, PythonAutomationPuppet, Chef, AnsibleCommunication SkillsEmail, meetings, etc.My administration philosophy is,”If it run’s in my environment, I need to know how to troubleshoot it and fix it; Windows, Linux, Cloud, whatever.”Good Luck.
