PDF Editor FAQ

I’ve been hearing a lot of bad things about Jim Hutton (Freddie Mercury’s partner) like he was abusive and things like that. Is it true?

Absolutely not. Freddie and Jim were very much in love. Freddie was from many things I read surprised by how deeply he loved Jim. He loved him so much that he even mentioned their relationship in a press interview. Before Jim that NEVER happened.Jim Hutton was an ordinary small town Irish man. There was nothing that fancy about him. He was simple and easy and kind. Everyone who knew him says exactly that. They often say how lucky Freddie was to have him.So let me guess some of the things you’ve heard. He published a book and made money off of Freddie after his death. How dare he? Well,That book though many get upset about his descriptions of Freddie during his illness. Well AIDS was scary and when he wrote it in 1993 very little was known about it. Jim was HIV positive when Freddie died. He also had a very hard time dealing with Freddie being gone. Think of how hard it was for fans. His lover and husband and the man who loved him would have a hard time. It’s been a rule it takes half the time a couple were together for someone to be in a place to accept it and move on. Jim didn’t have a lot of warning about leaving his home, the only one he’d known for 7 years. I will not respond to Mary and her actions that is not what this is about. He is getting hell from people who leave out that many people made money off of Freddie’s death. Mary did a few interviews and rumors say she was thinking about writing a book, but the arrangements fell through. She was paid for those interviews. Peter Freestone wrote a book with descriptions just as graphic about Freddie’s last days. The small details are a bit different, but the essential story is the same. Human memory is flawed most of the time. Details get twisted not just with time but with the number of people who hear it and the circumstances that formed that memory.Even Brian May said that no matter how sick Freddie got, due to how healthy he had been earlier in life and how well he fought off adversity they I guess for their own mental health were in a state of denial about him actually dying. Brian says the first time it really seemed real was when he heard the international news announce it. He says “I realized then, it was out there, it was real there was no taking it back and no denying it.”In a hospital when a loved one is on a respirator and considered dead and the family or the person has a living will that they don’t want to be kept alive on a ventilator if they have no way of waking up. Even then, they know it’s coming, they chose it, but I’ve been there and no matter how much you THINK you are “prepared” you aren’t. When that person is actually dead and all the machines are gone you cry so hard and still go through all the stages of grief. You deny it at first and I know that you secretly hope that the person will be okay once they take them off the ventilator. That they will miraculously wake up.It was even harder than that for the men who took care and stayed with Freddie. Peter is adamant that Freddie was himself, his wicked sense of humor intact until the very end. He held on to life until they told him it was okay to go. They would be okay. I can only imagine the daze of worry and grief they were in when the last days of his life came around. When Jim says a bone broke, it was more than likely a ligament popping that can sometimes hurt. I have some that pop when I lift weights with my hands over my head, my shoulders pop. It’s loud and often people seem concerned. Freddie was so thin by this time. He was always very thin, but he had lost almost 30 (not exact) pounds from even his small body. He had no fat and was eaten up with Karposi Sarcoma’s all over his body. Some have said that his temper and demands were a little more stringent because he was scared which who couldn’t understand. When Jim helped Freddie back into bed something in Freddie’s body popped. It’s possible it hurt Freddie which at that point was completely unintentional or that Freddie went into convulsions due to hearing it himself. Joe had to lay on top of him to finally calm him down. It was a horrific experience for everyone. The daze and auto pilot that those men lived in at the end would have altered their world’s and their memories of the events while in that daze. End of life care, and watching someone die when you are completely helpless is one of the hardest things there is in this world to endure, and if Jim wasn’t a good man who truly loved Freddie, he wouldn’t have stayed he couldn’t have, only love can get anyone through that. He wrote that book as therapy to get the story of their love out there. As we all know Jim was kind of a secret and he did get a bit snubbed at the end of Freddie’s life. No one wanted an interview with him and the Queen-spin-machine had Mary front and center. Jim didn’t want to be a secret anymore because he wanted people to know how much he loved Freddie. That book was only published in 1993 and I believe it to be honest. So many nobody’s have tried to profit off of Freddie who make stuff up. Why can’t Jim tell his story. The best selling book Somebody to Love makes claims of Doctor’s appointments that never happened and no evidence to back these claims up. They have completely conflicting stories of events we have several accounts of that were there, such as the reason Freddie wasn’t tip top for SNL in the US as him being sick and that’ s why he lost his voice. They make claims they have no evidence for, for the reason Freddie wouldn’t tour the USA due to insurance blood tests, which is absurd. Reasons no one has ever heard but in that erroneous and offensive book. So Jim said Freddie wet the bed IMMEDIATELY BEFORE he died. I can read that a lot easier than claims Freddie knew in 1982 he had HIV and in knowing still was promiscuous and ignored people’s well being, including Jim and that he knew and was tested when there was not even a damn test. That goes against everything we know about his personality and about the timeline of the AIDS epidemic.Jim choked Freddie in the nightclub, let’s address that crap now,Jim wasn’t a big guy. He was a bit bigger than Freddie, but he wasn’t big like Winnie had been in Germany. (if anything Winnie was abusive) Freddie had before this incident in a fun story put Francis Rossi of Status Quo in a headlock that Rossi said he was super strong. I think with this instance there is a language barrier. Freddie had a lot of indiscretions, there is no telling what he was actually doing to make Jim lose his cool. Jim had a temper like any man. Freddie had one too. I highly doubt that Jim choked Freddie, but to get Freddie to pay attention in a nightclub he would have had to corner him and make it where he couldn’t get away. Freddie was a very strong guy at this point. Everyone acts like he was so weak. No, Freddie was strong at that time he hadn’t gotten sick yet. There are a lot of sayings that British people say or in Jim’s case, Irish that aren’t literal. When I first read it I pictured more of a headlock situation by Jim than a choking incident. If it had been something super serious Freddie would have told his other friends. Joe and Peter served as bodyguards along with other duties and they had seen and heard many fights between Freddie and other lovers and had stepped in if they thought Freddie was truly in danger. Had this been that serious, they would have stepped in. Freddie could hold his own in a fight and men tend to be more physical than women in relationships. Freddie a little later after abandoning Jim at that club held Jim down on the bed that same night. That doesn’t sound like a man who could choke Freddie. Freddie’s throat was his meal ticket he would not have let that happen. When Bill Reid bit Freddie’s right hand the night before the Milton-Keynes concert, Freddie dropped him like a ton of bricks. No matter how much he loved a partner, you didn’t dare mess with his job or career. Music was his most important love over anything else. I really find this as harmless jealousy that was more physical than the way a man and a woman or two women would have handled it, but not abuse. The idea that Joe or Peter would let Freddie get choked by Jim in a public club is absurd.I borrowed this excerpt from my friend Robin Meadow’s post on this answer because it’s perfect. He simply describes an incident in which Freddie was trying to make him jealous at a nightclub. This behavior seemed to be a pattern with Freddie. Jim got angry as was intended and pinned Freddie up against a wall. “I pinned Freddie into a corner with my arm around his neck. I spat at him: ‘Don’t on New Year’s morning fuck around with me!” Then Freddie said he had gotten the reaction he wanted from him and Jim let go. That’s the only example of any sort of deliberate “physical abuse”. Some have even misrepresented his use of the term “spat” as in “I spat out the words..” to mean Jim actually spit on Freddie. But this is the kind of deliberate error that people make when they really hate someone. Saying that Jim “admitted to physically abusing Freddie” in his own memoir paints a very different picture than the reality and they know this but repeat it anyway.Jim was a gold digger they say.OmG! I cannot believe that this is even a sentence that people believe. Jim was not someone who cared about money. He made very little as a hairdresser and some say he was very good at his job and could probably have moved up in the industry. He never really wanted to he was “happy with his lot.” I really believe he didn’t know who Freddie was when they met. Jim worked, went home, and went to the occasional club with his boyfriend at the time or on his own. He wasn’t exactly Mr. Social Butterfly either. He was a creature of habit. Jim didn’t even accept a drink for free when Freddie first offered when they first met because he was with his boyfriend. When he was told that first time that Freddie wanted him in Germany, he panicked trying to figure out how to pay for it. It didn’t occur to him at that moment that Freddie would pay. Freddie told Jim he was a “singer.” It was a month or so after that first trip to Munich that Jim actually witnessed how much more and how amazing and famous Freddie was at Live Aid. A lot of Freddie’s former lovers had met him and moved straight on in. A few months into their relationship, Jim was ready to get serious and Freddie was still up to his usual indiscretions. He gave Freddie an ultimatum and Freddie chose him, but even then he was ready to leave if Freddie broke his promise. Jim continued to pay rent on an apartment even though he was often in Germany or at Freddie’s apartment Stafford Terrace. In the beginning, he bought Freddie a drink to make up for the last time he had rejected Freddie and Freddie would watch him at his usual bar trying to figure out if he was actually alone now. He turned down free drugs that Freddie offered to just play with Freddie’s cats. After a night of talking they exchanged numbers. Jim had the coveted phone number of a rock star. I’m positive that Jim was observant enough to see that Freddie had money. So Jim took Freddie’s number and forgot about it and went on with life. For 3 months he never called Freddie. It took Freddie coming back from his tour of Japan and Australia and Brazil for Freddie to call him. When he did Jim didn’t recognize his voice.Jim was not the usual user that Freddie dated. Those men allowed Freddie to cheat and treat them badly because they were using him too. Jim didn’t he wanted at least in feeling to be equal as in any relationship and he wanted fidelity. Freddie tried time and again to make that relationship as tumultuous as all the ones before him, but Jim never fell for it. In one of my favorite moments, early on, a weekend when Freddie was in London. He and his entourage went out to a club as usual. When they got to the club, he turned around and hissed at Jim to Fuck off. Freddie’s past lovers would have fought him over that. They would have made it a big deal. Jim loved Freddie at the time, but not so much that he was going to allow Freddie to treat him like crap. You know what this gold digger did? He turned around and ran out of the club and went home to his apartment he was STILL renting and resumed his life as it had been before Freddie. He did this for at least a week (it’s been a while since I read the book, my timing may be a little off) Freddie called him that night at 4 am much to the annoyance of his land lady. Finally, FREDDIE not Jim wore him down and asked Jim for his forgiveness. Which Jim gave. At this time Jim still had his apartment and his job which he went to every day he was supposed to. Jim bought Freddie’s ring with HIS money.Jim was happy to even fly to Germany all those times and when he flew to see Freddie during the Magic Tour when Freddie asked him he flew coach. It would have been very easy for him to ask Freddie for a plane ticket in first class. Jim makes it very clear that his sense of independence and his autonomy was super important to him. It was sometimes an annoyance to a Freddie who was used to his lovers falling in line.I’m jumping all over the place as far as time line but it’s stream of consciousness, as I go and remember.Jim kept his job, his crappy, hard, low paying job for months. Freddie asked Jim to move in with him in Germany. Jim insisted he only would only if he had a job. He wasn’t jumping at the chance to live off Freddie. Freddie then engineered it where Jim was kicked out of his apartment and forced to move into Garden Lodge, which let’s be clear, even FREDDIE didn’t live there yet. Jim wasn’t even comfortable enough in the house to unpack. The next weekend when Freddie was home he was the one who gave Jim room for his clothes and a drawer for his “bits and pieces.” On Freddie’s birthday Jim didn’t ask anyone for money to buy Freddie a gift. He gave him the clover that Freddie kept close for their whole relationship. As time went on, Jim finally QUIT his job at the barber shop due to change of ownership, and was hired by Freddie because he wanted to be a little bit on equal footing. He wasn’t happy to be a “kept” man. Freddie was very smart and always knew when people were using him. When he was diagnosed with AIDS he gave Jim a way out. I have no doubt at all that had he left Freddie would have paid for an apartment. Jim knew that. If he was in it for the money he would have taken the money and run. Jim stayed when he didn’t have to.When he went to take driving classes he signed up and paid for them on his own and only after a nosy Freddie pressed him did he tell him. When he was done he was happy to celebrate back at GL and Freddie posed the question of a car. Jim said he didn’t even think about a “little banger.” That is Irish for junk car. He didn’t want a new one, he didn’t really care. He just wanted to drive. It was Freddie who INSISTED he pick out a brand new Volvo from a catalog. Much to Mary’s dismay. When the end was near and Freddie knew it, he did everything he could to take care of the men in his life and make sure they had somewhere to go when he was gone. When land next to Jim’s mother became available. Jim went to a bank in Ireland and applied for a loan not even mentioning Freddie in an application, even though he was technically Jim’s employer. Jim wanted to do this on his own. He didn’t want Freddie to buy something for him and when his loan fell through he waited a week or two to tell Freddie what happened. Freddie was loaded! It would have been super easy for Jim to ask him for the money in cash to buy the land. A gold digger would have asked. When Freddie offered to pay for it, Jim only let him if they had a loan contract.Jim worked so hard on the grounds of Garden Lodge. That garden gave Freddie a hard to come buy peace and serenity during his suffering of a very painful disease. He was known to spend a lot of time in that garden and everyone made it crystal clear that Jim’s was no part time job. He did such a good job that when he was home in Ireland and leaves had fallen on the lawn as they do in the Autumn Freddie was upset. That shows how pristine Jim kept it.As far as abuse again. Joe, Terry Giddings, and Peter were always there. They weren’t Jim’s biggest fans either. They certainly liked him but they weren’t going to go out of their way to protect him. Had Jim truly hurt Freddie, there would have been no hiding it. Joe slept in the bedroom below Freddie’s and Peter was only a few feet away in his room before he moved to the Mews. I can’t believe anyone can believe that especially when Freddie was weakened those men would have allowed Jim to physically abuse Freddie. Usually when they fought and Jim got angry he left and went to a pub to cool down. There is a rumor by Jim haters that he went to an S and M club. Well, London was a wild place back then, but a lot of pubs were multipurpose, you could say. Peter has said repeatedly that Freddie thought S&M was fun to watch but he was not an active participant. Jim went to a bar to drink beer. Why he would never be into that kind of stuff and suddenly adopt it is beyond hard to believe. Every single one of Freddie’s friends says that Freddie was never happier than he was with Jim. They have no reason to say that if it wasn’t true.As far as the money Jim was left with. Freddie had told Jim he could stay in GL and Jim even said that he just wanted to stay for a little while to mourn and would have left very soon as the house wasn’t the same without Freddie. He wasn’t even allowed in without supervision by bodyguards in a house he had called home for almost six years in case he stole possessions that he hadn’t stolen for seven years, but now would. A house that Freddie never barred him from. He couldn’t even go into the garden that in essence had been his baby for years. That’s hard on anyone, but especially when you just lost the love of your life a week ago.Jim was just as surprised as Peter and Joe about the money and as far as we know never asked for any money. He certainly seemed surprised when Peter Freestone wrote it in his book. You have to remember though, for over seven years, Freddie had spoiled Jim. Jim really didn’t care about the money, but he flew with him on private jets and helicopters, went to eat with him at expensive restaurants and basically rubbed elbows with the elite that Freddie did. It’s a life that is very easy to become accustomed to. Also, it was well known that Jim wasn’t the best with money as he’d really never had any. He bought a small house in London for a couple years after Freddie’s death not able to leave the town that his greatest love had happened. After he wrote Mercury and Me and a little time had passed he moved into the house that held so many memories because it was built with Freddie’s exacting detail in Ireland. To say that Freddie was abused is to call Freddie gullible, naive, and weak. He was none of those things. The opposite actually is true. To say that Jim was a gold digger is to say that Freddie knowingly let Jim take from him, though he had his own job and his own life. That’s honestly the OPPOSITE of the behavior of a gold digger. There is zero evidence to support any of those claims. There is pages and pages and video on video of evidence to the contrary. Those that say that have blinders on, and just simply REFUSE to believe that Jim was just honestly a good person. Why is beyond my understanding, because so many have said it, and was it any other fact people would believe, but not that. Never that. Sorry this is so long, but I have more evidence than a lawyer at a murder trial. I have no clue how on earth people just ignore the amount of evidence and believe what they have no evidence at all. they use Mercury and Me as evidence of abuse, but then say the book is completely made up. Which is it? Just the hearsay of haters who weren’t there and didn’t know, but ignore the people who were there and were with Freddie almost every day of his life. They dispute facts in a book Jim wrote where a lot of the story lines up with Peter Freestone’sThor Arnold, one of Freddie’s closest friends said that it was ridiculous that people didn’t believe what he and other friends say about Jim. They were eye witnesses. They knew Freddie really well, maybe not Jim, but Freddie. Thor says that since he was a nurse Freddie confided in him a bit about his illness asking questions and things. He would have known if Jim showed any abusive behavior. These are things people notice. In one of my all time favorite Thor answers he says.“If all Freddie’s friends say he had a black cat, everyone would believe it. They would take it as fact, but when all his friends say things about Jim they just refuse to believe it.”That is about them and has nothing to do with Jim Hutton. Unless Jim was the best mastermind manipulator of everyone and a super good con man, there is no way he could have gotten one over on Freddie for seven years. Jim Hutton was the very opposite of abusive. He was the comfort in the storm that was the disease.

Is access to farm land a problem worth solving?

Some of the best farmland in the US is occupied by urban development. Every time you see someone spending gas and labor to mow a large yard, remind yourself that there could be food growing there, either as crops, or in the form of grazing animals. Think of all the fossil fuels used every year to simply keep lawn grass aesthetically pleasing. Wow.I am only being half sarcastic. My real point is that there is plenty of arable land that is diverted from farmland in many parts of the US, because it has greater value to our society for other uses, such as recreation and aesthetic purposes. If it had greater value as farmland, agricultural enterprises would buy the land away from those uses. (Economists call this allocative efficiency, among other concepts--resources flow to their best, highest value purpose, assuming no market distortion to prevent it.)As for people who want to farm, there are plenty who believe they want to farm. Some even try it out. But the simple truth is that farming is hard work. There are two approaches...treat it as a business or treat it like an expensive hobby. Either way, it isn't nearly as easy as many believe. Take all the work you put into raising one tomato plant, and multiply by millions.Another thing to consider is that although less than 2% of the US workforce is engaged in production agriculture, there is a much larger portion of the workforce engaged in other parts of the agriculture supply chain. People who might have in decades past worked directly on a farm now might work for a crop services company. These firms are suppliers of key inputs like fertilizer, seed and crop protectants. They are employed in the delivery and application of product throughout the growing season, or in the delivery of other services such as soil sampling, crop scouting, and site specific crop health mapping using GIS/GPA technologies.Something else to consider is the economic impact of having such as small portion of our workforce engaged in production ag. Every person who is not on the farm is one more person available to fulfill other functions in the workforce. That means more police, teachers, mailmen, manufacturing workers, chefs, doctors, barbers, car mechanics and so forth. We are the economic giant we are today because we don't have 70% of our workforce tied up hand cultivating our fields. So to sum up all this:If ag needs more land, it will bid for it. It will only do this if the return on the investment is available. Until then, people will build other things on it.There are people who want to farm, but cannot pull together the capital to do it in a large scale manner. There are ways around this. They are also hard work. How badly do you want it?Labor efficiency in ag, or any other sort of efficiency for that matter, is a good thing.
