Actually get ahead for a change. Even if taxes need to be raised, they won’t exceed the amount taken by insurance premiums.Try this. Wall street trades are done by computers now. Millions upon millions of tiny transactions according to software. Traders don’t largely buy and sell. They give their money to software that buys and sells on tiny ticks of a computer algorithm. Put just a .5c… ONE half a penny tax… on each transaction. Boom billions of dollars.This helps stabilize wall street, where trades will occur slower and more measured since too many trades will add up. Now say we put that into forgiving college loans, most of which are owned by the federal government.BOOM. Huge amount of money to put to buying a house, a car, getting a family going. Even if the borrowers have to pay 10–20%, it will still free up hundreds of billions dollars for demand. Oh, and people that don’t buy a house? Or a car? Well they can put money BACK in the market. That’s right. What comes around goes around.But if you REALLY want to get serious with the social democracy, you want three little letters. U.B.I. Universal Basic Income. A monthly check that can replace foodstamps and rent assistance. This is money to live on. So let’s say it’s 1,200 a month. That’s 14,400 a year. Times 300,000,000 is 4.32 trillion a year, or roughly one quarter of our GDP.I know what you’re immediately thinking . OMFG are you nuts?Not really. See here’s the thing with taxed money. It doesn’t immediately disappear. It goes to places and buys things, and those things pay for more things. So that 1200 dollars a month… well that’s poverty wages, but that would be on top of all other income. The 14,400 would be completely tax free because it comes from taxes. And who would be taxed? Who has that kind of money to be taxed?John Dillinger robbed banks because that’s where the money is. Today, the money is in corporations, multinationals, and billionaires. That’s who you tax. So you close carried interest loopholes. Put on a progressive tax for capital gains. Maintain the estate tax. And put a cumulative 1% deferred tax declaration fee for off shore profits. This will make the corporate habit of stashing profits overseas more and more expensive the longer they do it.Oh, I hear some of you saying, corporations will just move to Ireland. Sure. They’ll get to pay a 30% access tax on all profits made in the US. And people will still want to do business here because everyone will have an extra 1,200 dollars in their wallets. They’ll also lose their ability to legally lobby our politicians and might find renewing their patients to be much more difficult.I almost forgot! Tax robots too. Automation sucks payroll and income tax alike. Put a tax on robot per manpower hours. It’ll save some manufacturing jobs too.And here’s the thing. Business would be doing awesome. They’d have record profits, because all that money is being sucked out of bank accounts and put into the economy where it can be used by people. Rich people will still be rich, but there’d be a lot fewer poor people too. And it also gets away with a lot of the bureaucracy that comes with TANF, rent assistance, and other welfare programs because it’s a flat amount.And if you think it can’t work, Alaska been doing it for 40 years.
