Harsh Mohan pathology by jaypee publicationsGeneral MicrobiologyMicrobiology for Medical Students, D.R. Arora for knowledge and reference purposeAny of them and not all of them stated below for reading and passing purposeText book of Microbiology Anant NarayanText book of Microbiology C P BawejaMicrobiology for Dental Students, D.R. AroraFor preclinical prostho… now this is tricky the staff keeps on pushing for bouchers but its a tough book specially for those who are still adapting to english medium scenarioSo again for knowledge and good scoresBoucher’s Prosthodontic Treatment for Edentulous Patients – ElsevierEssentials Of Complete Denture Prosthodontics by Sheldon WinklerMcCracken’s Removable Partial Prosthodontics – By CBS PublishersAnd just passing the second yearNallaswamy textbook of ProsthodonticsAnd Rangrajan prosthodontics book will suffice! And is more than enough. TBH i read just these 2 books in my final year and achieved 21 rank all over gujarat university! For preclinical conservativeSturdevant’s Art and Science of Operative Dentistry – Theodore this will cover up everything and is bible for conservative dentistryBut for further practical purpose i suggest you to have a go forTextbook of Preclinical Conservative Dentistry – Jaypee DigitalPreclinical Manual of Conservative Dentistry – V GopikrishnaTextbook of Operative Dentistry – Vimal K Sikri – CBS PublishersClinical Operative Dentistry – Principles and Practice – Ramya RaghuP.S. you can achieve good score by reading them too its not like that but only thing matters is you have to read and work very hard! Because for the sake of passing people from my class had Jyotsna Rao which has all subjects in one book and Mastering BDS was the other one!Best of luck! Hope this helped!
I am BDS 3rd year student. I want to do MDS in oral and maxillofacial surgery. What is the right time to start preparation for entrance exams and how to do it?
Basic rules of Preparation for MDS or NBDE is the same.Best is to start preparing the moment you start your internship. The reason for that is because academic pressure of classes, exams, assessments, practicals, clinicals, viva etc are already done and over with and now your entire schedule only includes treating patients. The first three months keep all your pg entrance books aside and take out all your text books and reference books.Start with basic subjects. The stronger your basics are, the better and clearer your knowledge is.For eg - If your Head and neck anatomy and osteology is well learnt, you are very clear about all the foramen and the vessels & nerves passing through to ease your grip on maxillofacial surgery of final yr.Similarly if your Dental material is well learnt, you will have a better handling of Cons, Endo, Prostho. It is always best to start anything from basic level and then go upward.Finish revising each subject starting from 1st year and moving in order until final year.Highlight and jot down points you feel important.Synonyms and alternative names of various diseases and features should also be noted.Special trademark features and appearances are also important to note down. The exact measurements of angles, depths, incisions, needle entry etc are small details that many a times are a fav MCQ questions. Note them.Revise each subject at least twice before you start solving model papers.Once you are thorough with all the subjects, then you can confidently open Dental Pulse or any model test paper books and solve. You will not get all answers right in the first few times. But over time when you keep revising along with solving the papers, results will improve a great deal. The first 3 months just read your subjects well. In depth. Thoroughly. Repeatedly. The next 3 months solve papers and read the subjects parallely. After 6 months you will gave enough grip on the subjects. You can start giving mock tests at any of the Tutorials that specializes in PG preparation. They organize monthly and weekly mock test series programs at quiet nominal fees.If not, you can always keep the same ways of preparation continued. The more times you read the book, the better you will get at it.But I strongly feel that even revision work should follow the pattern of starting from 1st yr subjects and moving forth. This maintains a proper balance and does not confuse you.Pharmacology classifications, Biochemistry cycles, Oral Patho synonyms, Head and Neck nerves and their branches & sub branches, Prostho classifications, modification, contra indications of drugs, differential diagnosis of diseases, etc all should be written in chart form or so for quick glance later. If possible, write and paste all these on the wall. Everyday and anytime you can just glance at them on the go. It helps in retaining them better.MCQs becomes easier to answer and understand after each thorough read.Don't take your clinicals during Internship lightly. There are loads of things you learn better and even get better perspective about through treatments of patients. For eg FPD is often slightly difficult to understand in Final yr as no practicals are done in relation to this part of prosthodontics. Its all theorical knowledge. In internship once you get to work on few FPD cases, your concept becomes clearer. RCT, Impaction, Flap Surgery etc are also similar scenario. During Oral medicine postings, the more patients you treat, the better case history you understand and thus you get to know more.Invest at least 3 to 4 hrs daily from the first day of internship and keep following this pattern for 6months to 9months. Believe me it works!Books to followIst yrDM - Phillip, ManapallilCraig and power's restorative dental materialAnat - BD ChaurasiaPhysiology - Guyton, Ganong but I loved Sambulingam's language better.Biochem - SatyanarayanII yrPathology - Robbins (there is no alternative. This is the Bible. Read this first. Nothing else), Harsh Mohan is the Indian alternative.Microbiology - Lipponcott's , AnanthnarayanOral Histology and Osteology -Oral histology embryology by Ten Cate (I always preferred this. Even now)Orban’s Oral histology (this is more common though)Ash and wheeler's tooth morphology Anatomy and occlusion (very very important. Don't skip or find alternative please).Try to also find the book “Disorders of TMJ and occlusion by Okeson” (very good one and standard. I would add it as bible even if its not a text for normal syllabus because the Questions in PG entrance from TMJ are increasing and this is a standard latest text for that!)Clinical manipulation of dental materials by Smith et al.There is something called as “Manipal Notes for Preclinical Cons and Prosthodontics” that many might not know. Its a collection of notes by some random Manipal dental graduate who made a printed version in spiral binding. It is just a superb book. Try to get your hand on this gem if you possibly can.Pharmacology - K D Tripathi(just read only and I repeat again “only” this. It is the father and forefather of any Pharma book. No shortcut. No alternative)General Medicine - Allagappan ( i found it in 2nd hand market. A true gem. At least for a dental student)General Surgery - S DasIII & IV yrOral medicine & radiology -Burkett’s oral medicine, Anil Ghomes.Goaz and White dental Radiology, S C White& M J Pharoah Oral RadiologyOral pathology - Shafer’s oral pathology. (Standard TextBook for oral path.)Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology By Brad Neville, Douglas D. Damm ( For some reason I loved it more than Shafer's.)If possible try to find the book Oral Pathology by SK purkait. This book has some rare synonyms and clinical appearances that does not appear in any other books but have been asked in Entrance.Handbook of Oral Disease: Diagnosis and Management by Crispian ScullyOral surgery - Oral surgery vol: 1&2 by LASKIN , Neelima Ani MalikLocal anaesthesia by MALAMEDProsthodonticsHerbert T., Jr. ShillingburgContemporary Fixed Prosthodontics, Winkler essentials of complete denture prosthodontics, Removable partial prosthodontics by Stewart,Prosthodontics by Nallaswamy(though very comprehensive and concise, this book is really good combined effort of all the 3 parts of Prosthodontics)Periodontics - Carranza's Clinical Periodontology ( there is simply no alternative or reference book that can be as par this book. Its just the ultimate best to understand Periodontics)Orthodontics -Contemporary Orthodontics by William R. ProffitGraber’s orthodontics, BalajiPedodontics - J R Pinkham , Shoba Tandon, Nikhil Marwah(I found this book better than Shobha)Conservative dentistry - Sturdevent’s operative dentistry, Ramya Raghu's Operative DentistryEndodontics - Grossman's , Nisha GargCommunity dentistry- Soben PetersOxford Clinical Dentistry manual(this is an awesome mini bomb exploding with pointers and notes that's important. Try to get one).Once you are done with a few revisions of text and ref books..then you can start with solving MCQs.Some best books for MCQ practice areDental pulseDental bytesGowrishankar's DentestDental spectrum (for controversial and off beat questions) frankly I used to have fun solving this book because I used to get the answers wrong almost always :-)Manisha Prabhakar and Jatin Kalra - for some reasons last few yrs questions of Oral Pathology's and Perio were directly lifted from these books respectively.***I tried to attach images of books that are slightly difficult to find or not well known to many.Rest is all up to you and your hardwork. There is no shortcut or tips. The more you revise. The better you are.Concentrate on your exams. Once you finish final yr then you can start your PG prep.Once in a while do take breaks and go out. This doesn't waste your time. It revitalizes you and refreshes your memory. It's all about proper planning, correct implementation, constant revision and regular followup.Good luck. Hope I could help.
