Seasons passes by ! EASY! When I went through this with my kids in their teens, I got so tired of saying what you’ve been saying… so I gave THEM the problem.Each year at the beginning of the school year, I asked them for a complete list of what needed to be replaced in their clothing: from underwear and sneakers, right on up to their winter coats, backpacks, ice rink wear, and even their ski helmets—everything.They would print up the list on the computer and give it to me, then I would review it, and assign what I thought was a reasonable price for each of the items, and we totaled it all up for each kid’s list.It was always at least $500 for the winter season, or more some years (depending on need), and a bit less for the summer season.Here’s the Mom-genius move!I loaded a Visa cash card for each of the kids, for the total amount of what I thought was a fair/ reasonable price everything on the list. (Never used one? The cards are usually good for about three years, they are insured so if the kids lose them, you don’t lose the money, and you can view the shopping history online from your phone.)Then I gave them the card, and the “House Shopping Rules.”You have to buy everything on this list, using only the amount of money that I put on your card. No overages. (So, you want to spend $300 on sneakers? Well, then, you’re just going to be wearing your old jacket, old short jeans, the stained gym kit, and scary-old underwear for the next school year! Hope you like taking your books to school in a big ol’ Tupperware bowl…because we are not exceeding the budget—life’s about choices.)You can’t buy anything that you can’t legally wear to school under the dress code. (Of course, we made some, pre-agreed, exceptions for a party outfit, prom, safety/ sports gear, or beach clothing. I’m just frugal, not mean, or crazy.)The price tags do not come off the clothing until:I see it on your body, orapprove it, andyou can only purchase from stores where you can return things for a full, cash refund, just in case they don’t fit, don’t work, are of a poor quality, or they shrink… or I say they’re inappropriate for any reason.**** The genius move? ****Any money left over on that card, after purchasing every single thing on their list?Drumroll please…IT'S THEIRS TO KEEP! To spend, or save as they wish!Now? The good-value-for-my-dollar-pressure… is on THEM! Now they have skin in the game… So?Suddenly, $250 sneakers (for non-athletic kids!) becomes SO obviously unreasonable, even to THEM, when they can save THEMSELVES $200 by buying some other perfectly good, $49 Nike sneakers of their OWN choosing… at a discount chain, and then get six, used, games cartridges as a bonus! Instead of one, new game. LOL!My kids all of a sudden became AMAZING clearance, sale, and value-for- price comparison shoppers! You won’t believe it when your kids start checking ALL the clearance racks to buy a $9 T-shirt that says Adidas, instead of spending $29 for another one on the full price rack at Marshall’s or TJ Maxx, and you’ll probably pass out when they ask you for an extra coupon code… from YOUR smart phone… and, oh yeah, Ma…could you teach me how you stack them?But what was the best part for me as a mom? There were NEVER… any moredreadful,angry,exhausting,frustrating,fitting room door slamming,stressfulshopping trips with whiny kids, resulting in our still not getting everything we needed for back-to-school, or winter weather.Bonus! No more awful, circular discussions about how we are“not made of money,”“everyone lives on a budget,”“I don’t care what your friend’s Mom buys…” and“we have to stay within our allotted price range for these items, so that we can do other, fun things.”That STRESS was forever gone! They actually GOT it, in their own heads, finally!It nearly became a SPORT for my kids, to make their own choices, because they were in control of their kid-credit card purchases, and they were determined to get everything we needed. Except now, they were determined to do so at the lowest possible cost …because of the incentive of keeping all the leftover cash remaining on their kid-credit-card! (Clearly, their friends couldn’t tell the difference between a true credit card, and a reloadable Visa card but, hey, I’ll take that one as a win too!)****Another bonus for me? They stopped nickel and diming me to death, and whining for little purchases.*****They'd say “Oh, I want to get a new game cartridge for my Xbox,” or “I want to get new earrings.”I would say, “Sure. We can make a stop for that item. But, can you afford them this week? Are they in your budget?” and then the kids would have to stop, check the balances on their cards, and really, really think that impulse purchase over, and decide, whether or not that expense was worth it to them right now. No pressure on ME—it was 100% THEIR choice.It was very interesting for me, seeing my kids decide on their own that they could easily use their perfectly good backpack for another school year, because they wanted expensive leather sandals, or to spend more on an expensive name brand coat, or simply hoard their $$.If we were out shopping and the kids wanted something, and we were discussing it, I would often hear, “Ma, are we getting this with my money, or with your money?” although those were usually for other than clothing purchases. It would be ice cream, or a movie—some family thing—but they had been instilled with the idea of spending money thoughtfully, not frivolously. I would usually say “No, this is a family afternoon, so I’m paying for the ice cream, admission, or movie,” but what a parenting win for me!Cash cards are an awesome idea for school band trips, vacations with other families, or even prom dresses too: those can spiral into hundreds of dollars coming out of your budget very quickly.When you put their allotted budget on the cash card, and tell your kid, “Here’s all I’m giving you for prom expenses. Make it work!” Suddenly? They get really good about finding a dress within their budget, and leaving enough left over for a hairdo, shoes, a manicure, or jewelry. They can stick to the budget when they know that anything they spend over that amount comes 100% out of their OWN pocket money, savings, or part-time job cash.Reloadable cash cards were the best financial management tool and “Mom-move” I ever made for my kids.3/23/19 Update: since so many of you are asking?My kids were ages 4, & 14 when I began using the cash cards, and both did well with them. So well? I nicknamed the four-year-old …Warren Buffett. She hoarded cash, and often loaned it, with interest, ( LOL) to her older sibling. Smart kid!I used the cash cards, instead of bank cards for several reasons. They were 100% insured, replaceable in 48 hrs, they were not connected to ANY of my bank accounts (= more hack proof). and easily reloadable from anywhere in the world… even if I wasn’t home / in the country myself, and my kids were in China. (Few emergencies can’t be halved/ solved with cash.)The five dollar fee, over three years…it was totally worth all of that peace of mind for me.Thanks to everyone for reading my post!

Unknown. Many jobs don’t require a high school education. Could neanderthals get work digging ditches and picking crops? Probably.Graduate from high school. This one is more problematic. Indications from the tools that they made and the state of their artwork indicate that neanderthals did not handle abstract thoughts well. Overall, they were not inventive — their entire time as a species they never changed their stone tool kit.Would they be able to handle the math that is a required part of a high school education? Could they handle literature and classes in government? Don’t know. I’m happy we can’t perform the experiment because, if neanderthals could not, we would have an exploited underclass.
